Has Jesse Johnson ever written a good song? I don't think I've heard one. I'mnot claiming to have heard many, that's why I'm asking. I'm not being a dick, I just don't know. The few things I've heard by him don't tickle my fancy. I guess I just don't get what everyone likes about him so much. What's the big deal? It's NOT his guitar playing. Of that I am certain. He's like Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones: WTF?

Any song suggestions would be appreciated. That's pretty much my take, I wrote to one of his ex-bandmembers that Jesse's first album "was ok" just being honest. Wasn't bad, wasn't great. He could play the hell out of that guitar though. What's more I always saw him as a Prince imitator, not trying to dog him, i think he was ok like I said. His real strength was as a member of the Time, all together they were a monstrous force. | |

I don't think I'm going to change anyone's mind about JJ or his music. Here are his strengths to me:
He excels at writing music that showcases his strengths as a guitarist. In the 1980s, the bulk of that was MPLS funk with enough space for killer fills and solos. The true gems were on tracks like "I'm Just Wanting You," "Free World" (which is funky as all get-out) and "Love Struck." His touch at production was pretty cool, too. I still love "Affection" by Ta Mara & the Seen. That's his studio magic. When his lyrics scratched a little deeper than the usual pop fare, songs like "Black in America" really hit home for me. In more recent years, he's let his Jimi Hendrix debt be a lot clearer. And, I still say his work on the Bare My Naked Soul album influenced Prince on such tracks as "Lotus Flower" and "Boom." Sure, his look in the 1980s was androgynous and Princish. But I think there's so much to JJ's work that it's nearly impossible to dismiss him as a Purple Wannabe. | |

really? I wouldn't know, his music just never moved me, his first album was straight minneapolis sounding stuff which was fine, the dress, the hairstyle, the makeup, the use of Pink instead of purple, his onstage mannerisms, all make me think "Prince wannabe". He even tried to pay his bandmembers like Prince did, not enough. Second album was not even as good as the first one, Crazay was ok as a single, and I'm aware Prince used him to stoke his own competitiveness but maybe he saw something I couldn't, he's not anywhere near that level of artistry. | |

The cold blooded part about Jesse getting dogged out over the "Prince-ish" look was that Jesse was the one who brought the "Pretty Boy" image to P's camp. In 80 when P first met Jesse through Morris, P's image was all about being the black version of Iggy Pop. That's where P was at during THAT stage. From some of the things Morris and Andre both told me was that when P first saw Jesse with the sky high jheri curl, the eyeliner, the pleated pants and pleated shirts, the custom pink cabinets and pink guitars, (all this shit Jesse ALREADY had) then all of sudden P started to switch gears visually. When P hit with Controversy, you can't see the transformation on the first 2 promo videos of Controversy and Sexuality because P was still on the Iggy Pop phase which was a carry over from Dirty Mind. But you can see it on the Controversy tour with The Time opening.
By then, P's image was more "softer" in his face and hair along with a more conservetive look in his dress. I'm not saying this was to do with Jesse or The Time as far as him wearing pants instead of his drawers. BUT, P started wearing much more makeup, heavy eyeliner, he had more ringlet curls put in his hair to hang on one side, that combined with the pleated pants and vest (which I always credited to Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" tour) Morris and Andre both said that AFTER seeing Jesse and his color pink, that's when P also started to put MORE emphasize on the color purple. In other words, it was untill Jesse hit the circle, then P was thinking MORE about being "pretty". Before that, P was waaay to raw and hard edged for that, even though he was wearing drawers. But after seeing Jesse, who ALREADY had his image down when he first joined The Time, P got on the "pretty boy" vibe then. Jesse wasn't alllowed to even wear pink untill on the second tour. Also I was told that P had Jesse pin some of his hair back on the sides in the photo that appeared on the back of the album. Although the promo and tour poster of The Time for the "What Time Is It" album, which has the band in the same clothes, everyone except for Jesse, who here is wearing his pink suit and his hair is blowed out more and not pinned back on the sides like it is on the back of the album. So of course it's natural for people to assume Jesse got his visual thing from Prince but the irony was it was really the other way around. I'm certainly not down for trying to change anybody's opinion either. But for me, Jesse's earliest track, which should have been not only on his debut but should have been the first single. "Free World" was bangin'. Another one of my favorites is another b-side "Fool's Paradise" which really showcases his ode to Hendrix. THAT'S how I wanted him to hit on his debut, showcasing his lead solos more. I also love the track he did fot T and the Seen "Blueberry Gossip",...his backwards guitar on that as well as "Fool's Paradise" , along with his tone, is KILLIN'. The track "I'm Just Wanting You" is great as well. Again, it's all about the guitar. I too dug "Black In America". My favorite album by Jesse hands down though obviously is 'Bare My Naked Soul". Jesse shows on this album what he has always shown in a live setting, that he is a killer when it comes to his axe playing. And I like the songwriting on Bare My Naked Soul as well. Hey, I am not an egotistical guy, If i'm wrong I'm wrong, are there pics? BG you have really great anecdotes which I can't argue with. Even if they are all true, I would still have to relisten to some of his music (the most important thing) to see if I was wrong about that. I know some called him a Prince wannabe,I remember an interview where Jesse replied that in fact it's a compliment,better 2 be compared 2 Prince than someone else... After Purple Rain there were a lot of bands/artists who had that typical Prince look&sound because Prince was huge then. The same thing always happens when some kind of music seems 2 do well on the charts (remember ALL those grunge bands when Nirvana & Pearl Jam sold millions,the whole R&B hype mid 90's?). I really enjoyed the whole funk/pop/rock thing in the 80's; Jesse in particular,Ready for the world,Da Krash,General Kane,Chico DeBarge.... And like some critic said when he was discussing the Andre Cymone album: they filled the gap when Prince went from Funk 2 Pop!! (ATWIAD,Parade) NOT that I didn't love P's albums but the songs from Jesse&Co. where better 4 the dancefloor and I loved 2 listen 2 them on my walkman

No doubt that he was in the same mold as P. Of course he was...that is from where he came (professionally). However, if anyone thinks he's still a wannabe is out of their mind. Bare My Naked Soul blew everythiung out. He is a monster guitar player. I've heard the clips of his new disc and the arrangements are everything I like...guitar, horns, funky. The man can play and is pretty amazing write.r Stop comparing to P. It actually does a disservice to P as he is a musician who can not be compared. No one can do what P did previously.
Check out Jesse's 2nd disc,...yes, Minn funk but with his own sound too. The guy is amazing and ihave not been this excited about a new album in ages...ages! |

Check out Jesse's 2nd disc,...yes, Minn funk but with his own sound too. The guy is amazing and ihave not been this excited about a new album in ages...ages! I've heard some previews from the new album and it sounds great; not old fashioned but funk how it should sound these days. Yes,some will say (again) that he sounds a bit like Prince,but then we could say this from Maxwell also..or maybe Maxwell sounds like Jesse? Or Prince like Maxwell,or...
