I am a hardcore DEZ DICKERSON fan

just wanted to say that since Wendy and Lisa seem to constantly dominate this forum. Dez deserves props more than anyone in the original lineup.

He does
But I think one thing is that there isn't much online info on Dez

I'd give just as much or more 2 Dr Fink from the original line up

enough with the picture bro

I think u think I have a preference out of Wendy & Dez and I don't, those are my 2 favorites, I love Dez's hard core rock element he brought to Purple Music, because I love Prince rock side the most,

Mico Weaver is my next favorite, I don't think be brought what Dez and Wendy contributed though

Like I stated on the other thread, NO ONE on this site has championed and trumpeted and pontificated about Dez more than I have. To me, that's nothing more than stating a fact. I say that to say yeah, I can MORE than relate to the sentiment of this thread. I've been a fan of Dez's since the very beginning. A little proof of that is me as a kid, in the footage at the Purple Rain Premire, wearing the white headband. Clearly evoking Dez and at the same time, showing where my allegiance was at. Dez and I were the only 2 cats at that entire event wearing headbands. wink And then for me to actually have met Dez, at the Premire, inside the theatre, and to have him and everyone else in there (including The Revolution) see and acknowledge that I was clearly dressed as him, a miniture version of him, as a kid, that was priceless. To have him sign my premire ticket, and in that, in what he wrote, to address and acknowledge me as a musician and a guitarist, ...very cool indeed. So yeah, I can relate. The 3 times I had seen P live while Dez was in the band, 85% of the time, my eyes was dead on Dez. Studying and learning. So yeah, it's safe to say that I can agree with the sentiments of this thread.

Again, you're going to get the Lisa and Wendy fandom on here. That's a given...For MANY reasons. MANY people on this very site, I think, are fans of Prince BECAUSE of Lisa and Wendy. What I always found interesting is that people act like W&L are joined at the hip. Like their ONE person. I say THIS because LISA, (who I have ALWAYS loved) was in the band since Dirty Mind. She also was a key figure in P's thang. Visually and vocally. P featured Lisa if for no other reason because she was a female. All of this without Wendy. No knock against Wendy, (she's a cool rhythm guitarist), just stating a fact. All through Dirty Mind, Controversy AND 1999, it was Lisa who, as a female, was holding it down. Yeah, Jill was there on 1999 visually and vocally, but of course, she wasn't an official member of the band. Lisa was. I say this to only say that Lisa just didn't spring feathers when Wendy joined the band. To me, I always found it odd that the W&L's fans don't acknowledge LISA. With them, it's like Lisa didn't exist when Wendy wasn't in the band. Lisa only MATTERED when Wendy came to the forefront. That was never the case with me. That's why I like to refer to them as Lisa and Wendy. (as Prince did in the film). And not Wendy and Lisa. Because Lisa was already there and getting down. None of which has to do with Dez of course. Just addressing the W&L love and was curious about "what about the love for Lisa" from their fans. Again, I think it has a lot to do with many of W&L's fans on this site don't seem to really be into the period of Prince when Wendy wasn't in the band. For many, it's all about ATWIAD and UTCM. Which of course, Lisa and Wendy were prominent. I think P wanted to see if lightning stuck twice when he employed a similar promotion a year later with Sheila and Cat. He "featured" them, like he did Lisa and Wendy. Although not to the same "fanfare" was given to them from the public. But I think P tried to repeat the same formula to a degree. Obviously only Sheila was a musician and not Cat. But visually, I always thought he tried to repeat the same formula visually.

I kid you but I appreciate the importance Dez has in your musical life. Rock is black music and I support those black artists who are brave enough to choose to claim it. Popular music was far more segregated back in the 70s and 80s. I remember wakling into most receord stores and actually seeing a section called "Black" music. And then I would go to the Rock and Pop sections and see records by white artists who were doing the some kind of music that was in the so called Black section. It was one of the first indications of the role race plays in EVERY facuet of American life - nothing we know is exempt from it. Our current president is living proof of that.

Part of the reason there is almost no black audience for rock music is because there were not enough aritsts like Dez - and the few that were around never got a fair shake. Dez is a classic example of that. Dez was most important to the rock elements of Prince - those same elements that broadened his sound and helped him crossover in a big way with Little Red Corvette (and his classic solo). I am old enough to know what the music world was like before Prince and Michael Jackson crossed over with Corvette and Beat It. MTV gets the credit for this crossover but these videos helped make MTV the ground breaking phenomenon that it once was.

Acknowledging the relevance of Dez Dickerson is not something that comes at the expense or exclusion of Wendy. The self righteous of the Wendy and Lisa devaoted fan base will think otherwise as they overstate their contributions (you still cant tell some of them that Wendy and Lisa did not write Purple Rain just like you cant tell some folks that Obama isnt a muslim - they prefer to anesthisize themselves to their own version of reality). To them I say knock yourself out. Truth is truth.

It's how you do it, there are many Dez fans, I'm one of them

but when you say. Acknowledging the relevance of Dez Dickerson is not something that comes at the expense or exclusion of Wendy.
Yet in your opening statement you basically pit Lisa & Wendy against Dez and like blackguitarist said Lisa & Wendy aren'tjoined at the hip, why did you put in Lisa since she isn't a guitarist? When you start out a thread like that it's seems your looking for a battle with someone

And I've done it before all U have 2 do is title it
Uptown Profile:Dez Dickerson
and without challenging anyone just do a profile on Dez, where he started before Prince/bands etc etc, when he came to Prince's camp what songs did he write did he contribute to the Time & Vanity 6 project, post picture of Dez etc etc

You say W&L posts dominate the thread (I doubt it) they just have a lot more going on
the Family the Time are talked about almost as much
and there are more Bria topics than anyone, next 2 Sheila E, a lot on Jesse Johnson
But people are just posting their fav topics, no one is stopping anyone from posting all the Dez posts they want

that's an appreciation thread and other will follow your lead when they post
But the way you presented it is like you want to start a fight dude

What? Make sure you read my post. I dont even mention them until the end of the post and when I do it is in the commonly known contenxt - which is WENDY AND LISA. If you want to make my intelligence and knowledge of music and social history some kind of combative thing, you can I suppose..in this case, you would just be wrong. Be assured that there are millions of far more important things to fight about so you wont see me engage in any such behavior over anything to do with Wendy and/or Lisa. Thats for fanatics.

Your just full of contradictions
what post that you mention them at the end? the VERY 1st post is yours an it's a 2 liner

BOFIE wrote:I am a hardcore DEZ DICKERSON fan

you started this one, because of another 'Dez vs Lisa&Wendy' thread which shows you are engaging in such behaviour: theKing66 started his on 6.16.09 you started your after his/after posting there on 6.17.09

And again U must be trying to start something because why mention Lisa? It's obviously in comparison to a guitarist...
I still don't think any of the piano/synth/keyboard players that followed her could touch her or have the impact she did in Prince's music.

Again Your thinking I'm combating you,
when all I'm saying is create a profile for Dez since you champion him I'm assuming you will have stuff to add to it to share with us

I have lot of stuff too to add, you don't need to bring in Wendy(& Lisa) just do posts on Dez like others do on the people that interest them

Are both of you serious or playing around? Because I had the exact OPPOSITE reaction. Dez truly couldn't have been more nicer and gracious towards me. So I'm really surprised that he would treat anyone in the fashion that you both stated.

I dont believe those stories. If Dez did that, I bet the way these people came at him had something to do with it. Dez is truly one of the good guys.
He walked past me and I said: Hello, Mr. Dickerson. If that is coming at him wrong, he can double fuck himself.

Wow... When was this? How long ago?

What ever happened to that new book that he was requesting "donations" for in advance back in October 2008? I wonder how many got burned in that scam?

Ah, I see. Must be a limited release, I've checked but hadn't seen it on sale anywhere (or any mention of it). Do you have any links to it?

I think you may be referring to the wrong book anyway, perhaps.

Rock is not black music.
No black audience for rock music is because white folks make it better now.

I LOVE these ^^^ kinds of posts because it exposes so much bullshit. cool Question: Why would any one who hates and resents a black man who is a rock musician even be on a black rock musician's site (Prince) in the first place? Question: Why would they desire to open a thread on ANOTHER black rock musician (Dez) if there was NO interest whatsoever on their part? Contradiction...The great thing about Contradiction is that it mirrors what people usually don't want revealed...ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about music KNOWS that blacks INVENTED rock. The very term "rock and roll" came first from old black bluesman which coined the phrase "rock and roll" which was slang for sex. Since cursing wasn't allowed in recorded music back then, instead of saying "fucking", they said "rock and roll." All of your great "rock" artists, from The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Guns N Roses, or closer to today, Velvet Revolver, Metallica... will all tell you this. Why? Because they know and ACKNOWLEDGE this as fact. Don't be fooled into thinking that there is not a black audience for black artists who plays rock. I was a member of the Black Rock Coalition for years and I seen plenty of black folks from the stage in the audience. Is it mainstream? Of course not. But THAT will change. And as far as whites doing rock "better" than blacks, well...that's all a matter of opinion and is hella subjective. Obviously THAT depends on who you ask. cool wink

Answer: Because that's what Trolls do, that's how they roll.

Answer: Because that's HOW Trolls bait their prey, hoping against all odds that they'll get a bite.
