Otherwise, it'll prove my initial statement about you and you're reasoning for running the thread in the first place to be correct. Even though I am a huge Wendy/Lisa fan I am going to say Dez on this one. He was briallant at doing solos and his shit was tight especially on LRC '12 dance mix. As for Wendy she is good at doing songwriting but yeah her PR tour solos weren't her best. I read somewhere she even said herself that she didn't feel comfortable of doing solo but her skills of doing it has improved over the years as she felt more comfortable in her own skin.

now I can't say that I have studied up extensively on either one of them.. But I would definitely say that Wendy is a better rhythm player and writer. She is a musical genius (exageration), just look at her work with Lisa and other artists. I feel like she probably had more input in his songs as well being a part of the "triumverate" wendy and lisa refer to. I don't know about Prince wanting to tap that but she was barely legal then.just saying. In response to many of the previous comments: damn, some you people acting like you were inside of Prince's head talking bout all his underlying intentions and motivations bout the feel of songs and the image of his band. On an ending note, Wendy being a young white chick and lesbian lover to lisa did create a more exciting image. As cool as Dez was with his explorer and rising sun head band, wendy was cooler and hotter and had more chemistry with Prince. love their interactions on stage. and finally, all around wendy is probablly a better player than Dez, maybe not in the leads department but in every other.

Dez by far simply because the music was better when he was around. Whether someone contributes or not, the company that an artist keeps has a big influence on how they are feeling and the type of music they make. When Dez was around, the music was hard and current sounding for that time. There was none of that far out psycadelic artsy/farsty stuff in Prince's music. Andy is a four letter word.

Wendy by far. She brought a unique style of rhythm guitar playing to the band that she probably knicked from jazz-fusion. That's why Purple Rain sounds best with her dense, Joni-like intro.

blackguitaristz said: If we're talking about comparing the two in a live setting,...come on now, don't let your love for Wendy BLIND ya'll into thinking that Wendy threw down harder than Dez did. Live?...Wendy could NEVER play the lead lines to "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" and "Bambi" if her life depended on it....Never. Hell, up untill the 1999 tour, Dez as a lead guitarist, was taking Prince himself to school. And ya'll KNOW Wendy can't fuck with Prince as a guitarist. Like I have said, as a rhythm guitarist, I've always gave Wendy her props. And on the PR tour, she looked cute and she had that sexy swagger and I liked when she would do that stomping with one foot thing she would do when she was felling it. But over Dez in a LIVE setting? ...Fuck nah. Not even close. If P didn't KNOW that Dez was cold blooded, he never would have let Dez near a guitar solo that he himself could record. ESPECIALLY on a song like Little Red Corvette. P KNEW that was going to be his crossover pie in the sky so he didn't want to blow it. THAT'S the very reason he wanted Dez to come up with a solo and to record a solo for that song. Prince was smart. He KNEW Dez was better suited for a solo for THAT song than he was. Prince wanted that song played on white stations so it could appeal to white listerners. Period...That's a plain fact. So to truly accomplish that, he wanted Dez on the solo because he knew Dez's playing style was more akin to white listeners than his own. No matter how much rock Prince plays, and how many rock guitar solos he has recorded, P's phrasing, his tone and his style in his solos have ALWAYS been more "black" sounding. He's straight from the school of Hendrix, Eddie Hazel & Ernie Isley in that regard. His solos on Get It Up, 777-9311, Let's Go Crazy, Lady Cab Driver, are just a few but perfect examples of this. Dez's tone, and his phrasing, are more akin to a "whiter" rock sound. P knew THAT and he wanted THAT on THAT song.

<--- has Dez's "One Man" cd. Dez has chops for days. I like Wendy's writing and her acoustic phrasing. But, Dez don't play... I mean, er, when he plays.
Props, as usual, to Z. | |

Apparently, I'm needed by you and several others on this site going by the orgnotes that I received wanting me to post on this thread. Initially, when I first saw the thread, I thought 2 things...1, this is a "Bait" thread. Obviously designed to get certain people to post and 2, to attempt to cause (no pun intended)"Controversy". Personally, I had no desire to post mainly because I, more than ANYONE on this site, has championed Dez to the high heavens. I, more than anyone, has stated countless times, in TONS of posts and threads that I have written, in great detail, about Dez's importance. To not only Prince's career and to Prince personally, but also to his importance to black rockers (like myself) everywhere. So because of all of this, I felt that EVERYBODY on here already KNEW where I stood in the matter. In the W&L Q&A thread where everyone on the site was encouraged to ask them a question...I specifically asked Wendy if she felt any pressure in replacing someone in Prince's band who was so prominent and dominant in Prince's band and career...Musically and visually. If she felt that she had "Big shoes" to fill. As I also stated several times in the past, Wendy was cool for her short period in the band. Many have the tendecy to think Wendy was around a lot longer than she actually was. She was only there for 3 albums. Granted, she came in the band at Prince's motion picture break through and his opus "Purple Rain" and was able to ride the wave of THAT success. Prince did not want Dez to leave the band. Dez's character was written in an early draft of Purple Rain. But P needed to know that Dez wasn't going to jump ship right after the film and tour. Prince WANTED Dez for a 3 to 4 year span and needed him to commit to THAT. Dez couldn't do it. So he left. Wendy, with having an ear to what was going on in the band from Lisa, made sure to be ready in the wings if Dez did leave. He did and she was ready. She had easily a good two years to prepare for the band being that she was always there. No fault of hers, mind you. Just right place at the right time. But to me, it's not even about Wendy. I choose Dez.
I soooo wish Dez had never left the Prince fold. He kept Prince on a New Wave/Rock/Hard Funk path - which was where Prince was at his brilliant best. Wendy took him into jazz/folk/psychedelia - areas he did not shine nearly as brightly. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

Yeah Dez was Metal/New Wave/Punk not Funk though I loved the edge he brought, his style influenced Prince's style too I don't think Wendy took him into jazz/folk/psychedelia by 1984 Prince had a good exposure of various music tastes from people in his camp The folkish sounds(Prince never really did Folk music) is very similar to his 1st 2 albums Prince was a big fan of folk music via Joni Mitchell since he was young He even had her at his preview of ATWIAD Sheila E is probably the one that got him into the Jazz vibes as well as Eric Leeds and Alan Leeds the Psychedelia (again nothing that is so strong or dominate in his music)was a cool addition and again nothing overpowering. What are your examples of Folk or Psychedelia songs by Prince?
