Where did you see Wendy just standing in 1 spot?
Just 2 name a few videos that are easily known

Did you see Purple Rain performances?
Did you see the America video?
I've seen the Purple Rain tour and the Parade tour
And she ain't in 1 spot
now take into account that the Parade(HitnRun) tour was doubled the band from purple rain. 3 dancers and extra guitarist 2 horn players, sometimes Sheila E and Susannah sharing a mic with Wendy half the time

I like them both equally, those are the only 2 guitarists the Prince has a hot stage chemistry with out of all his guitarists
This picture you posted is from the Brit2006 Award show... did you see it?
http://prince.org/msg/7/306329
Wendy was all over the stage. That's one thing I love about the veterans(Wendy Sheila...Lisa is tied to the synth/keyboards) they get up there with him and know they are with a buddy/friend and it shows

Man, she is amazing on the guitar. She plays lead and rhythm really well.
I may not like the man.
I may not like his music after the mid 90s.

I respect his current artistry...I just don't like him.

Dez would crush Wendy on guitar. He put down the solo that broke Prince through to a rock audience and is remembered as one of the 100 greeatest solos of all time. What has Wendy done like that?

Wendy was in the Prince camp since the Dirty Mind years, so her friendship with Prince via her relationship with Lisa brought her into the band

She and Prince would strum the guitar together and do acoustic work
Dez decided to leave(stars in his eyes) and also became a bit prudish(didn't want to do Head anymore, but he did at the Family Jam this year)
Wendy was pulled into the band, and a different ethereal guitar style, good on the electric guitar and rhythm guitar and her song writing contribution I think outshined anything Dez(my 2nd fav) to the plate

Dont fool yourself into thinking that her father didnt have something to do with her position. It was more unusual to have a white chick on guitar and it made Prince look that much more different. THat had alot to do with it as well. She ended up doing her sister as well. All of this factored more than her actual guitar playing in my opinion.

Oh, Dez moved on because he had the talent and ambition to do he own thing (straight rock) - and has been a successful producer and high level executive with his own label in Christian rock. He also became saved and - like Prince is this very day - had a proble with the lyrics to songs like Head. That isnt prudish. Get your facts right - where is that blackguitarist guy when you need him?

Two totally different styles.

I like Wendy's creative input (songwriting), her rhythm playing and her backing vocals. Sometimes I get the idea that her live solo playing was a bit messy, at least compared to Prince's playing (sorry Wendy ...)

As for Dez, I recently watched some old concert dvd's (1981-1983) and was very impressed by the tightness of the band, both instrumental and vocal. The harmony singing of the early band was VERY song and powerful. As for Dez' playing, he wasn't a top soloist, but his Van Halen imitations were quite amusing.

Listen to his solo on Sexy Dancer from the City Lights set on the COntroversy tour in Columbia, SC. Also in City Lights, dig his work on the 1999 tour.

Wendy Melvoin played an amazing solo on "Do Me Baby" on the Purple Rain tour.
And the rhythm work she did on KISS was amazing.

Dez Dickerson...well.rolleyes

Thank God, he left when he left.
1999 and Little Red Corvette were great with him in it. >

I thought Dez was some good looking stuff back in the day like in the LRC video, but I have to admit, I do like Wendy's guitar playing a little better.

And I wanted to wear my hair like hers in Purple Rain! biggrin

What you said about Wendy is partially possibly true but the fact that she was a friend and Prince and her did acoustic playing together is probably the biggest factor along with Dez leaving

Oh and Dez if I'm not mistaken performed Head at the recent Family Jam in Minneapolis

Apparently, I'm needed by you and several others on this site going by the orgnotes that I received wanting me to post on this thread. Initially, when I first saw the thread, I thought 2 things...1, this is a "Bait" thread. Obviously designed to get certain people to post and 2, to attempt to cause (no pun intended)"Controversy". Personally, I had no desire to post mainly because I, more than ANYONE on this site, has championed Dez to the high heavens. I, more than anyone, has stated countless times, in TONS of posts and threads that I have written, in great detail, about Dez's importance. To not only Prince's career and to Prince personally, but also to his importance to black rockers (like myself) everywhere. So because of all of this, I felt that EVERYBODY on here already KNEW where I stood in the matter. In the W&L Q&A thread where everyone on the site was encouraged to ask them a question...I specifically asked Wendy if she felt any pressure in replacing someone in Prince's band who was so prominent and dominant in Prince's band and career...Musically and visually. If she felt that she had "Big shoes" to fill. As I also stated several times in the past, Wendy was cool for her short period in the band. Many have the tendecy to think Wendy was around a lot longer than she actually was. She was only there for 3 albums. Granted, she came in the band at Prince's motion picture break through and his opus "Purple Rain" and was able to ride the wave of THAT success. Prince did not want Dez to leave the band. Dez's character was written in an early draft of Purple Rain. But P needed to know that Dez wasn't going to jump ship right after the film and tour. Prince WANTED Dez for a 3 to 4 year span and needed him to commit to THAT. Dez couldn't do it. So he left. Wendy, with having an ear to what was going on in the band from Lisa, made sure to be ready in the wings if Dez did leave. He did and she was ready. She had easily a good two years to prepare for the band being that she was always there. No fault of hers, mind you. Just right place at the right time. But to me, it's not even about Wendy.

Many on here will always favor Wendy...Hell, many on here favor Wendy OVER Prince. So whatever...They have their reasons as I have my reasons for choosing Dez. To me personally, it's not even close. But I'm NOT into trying to convince anyone on here of anything. People dig who they dig...period. Many on here simply DON'T care about Dez's importance in the band. For the same reasons why many on here can't relate to Prince himself during the period Dez was even in the band.

Wow. Her father had a lot of foresight, getting Wendy's girlfriend the shipping clerk a job with Prince four years earlier, while Wendy was still in high school. Are you sure Mike isn't a member of the Illuminati or something?
