Hey so I have a question about Bria's singing ability

Does anyone here know if she can sing on stage? You know, without lipsyncing? Is she a good performer?

I'm a bit worried she's just a recording artist and Prince is gonna look a real fool, because he said that stuff about "real music by real musicians" and how he doesnt like lip-syncing etc..

I hope for both their sakes she can give a good live show.

It certainly gives a singer more credibility if they always sing live on stage but success is not necessarily dependent on it. Similarly I don't think Prince's continued musical credibility is going to suffer as a result of her singing chops or potential lack of them.

So far, she sounds OK/good to me. I'll probably get the album if/when it ever gets released cos I'm a completist and it has Prince involvement. Wider success will be reliant on many other factors that are almost impossible to quantify. Huge mainstream pop success will either happen or not happen and lip-synching is never a career killer unless you have a major on-stage backing track faux-pas like Milli Vanilli or Ashlee Simpson etc (even then singing artists are able to recover in most cases). The mainstream pop buying public are a fickle bunch and I don't think they care that much about live singing. Just look at Britney Spears.

Sure, I hear you. I guess I'm coming from the angle of Prince specifically making a big deal out of the whole "real music by real musicians" and all the comments he's made over the years about the importance of being able to sing live on stage.

If Bria cant cut it, does that mean everything he said doesnt matter anymore?

Hey I'm happy to settle for a 'recording artist' only.. just doesn't make sense in terms of Prince's firm stance on what 'real music' is.

I can't wait to hear her deliver a great live performance.

We've had this discussion many times before. Prince is guilty of making a sweeping generalisation in his "real music" soundbite.

We all kind of know what he means though, he is talking about people up on stage who can play instruments live, his live band, himself. He went through a stage in interviews where he kept stating that artists who make music just using "computers" were not real musicians. He knows that he also uses software, effects, drum machines etc and always has, but he has the live instrument abilites to back that up and uses musicians who also are capable.

A lot of electronic or dance or rap acts do not have that same live ability relying on backing tracks, loops, turntables and the odd press on the keyboard to trigger a sample (Prince's band has done this too). Now some of these artists can also play and have very high levels of musicianship but choose to make the music electronically cos that's the genre they prefer.

Now back to singers, I don't think the same quote applies cos Prince loved Tamar's voice, Shelby's voice, Bria's (ahem) voic etc etc. they do not "play" but similarly they are capable of singing live. Prince hasn't really mentioned the lip-synching thing since the mid-1990s. Real Music by Real Musicians is his new mantra.

Is there a video or something somewhere where she has done it? If you know where I can find one that'd be great.

Also, I thought he made a remark as recently as within the last couple years about "no lipsyncers on this stage!" or something like that, at one of his gigs.

Either way, if she does a Britney Spears on us and only sounds good in a studio with tuners all over her voice, I'll be a bit disappointed as a music lover, that the world's "leading musician"- Prince-, delivers us a b-grade vocalist.

I truly hope he doesn't.

Why do you care so much about Bria? You are confused LOL Prince performing live is all i care about! I dont want another Tamar shoved down my throat. If Brias album turns out to be good, than great and we will all have another cd to enjoy in princeland but im not losing any sleep over seeing her live. She doesnt have enough material or exposure yet.

I thought it was a fair question. Tamar did gigs with him before her album came out. How come Bria isn't doing the same.

Her album never came out. Maybe Prince is trying a different tack with Bria for that very reason?

or maybe she just can't sing? I'm beginning to wonder if she isn't just a glorified backing vocalist, she did some work with Usher right?

Like 90% of what he throws around and reverses and side steps constantly. it's kinda hard to believe much of what he says.

My bad, thanks for reminding me. I completely forgot that the world's most colorful and creative musician is fatally flawed when it comes to his choice of proteges. Why is that?

Welcome to the org new member! I have to say that all of this pointing fingers

is quite ridiculous. It goes both ways. I have received very suspicious

orgnotes as well and I am certainly not Bria Valente. This site is getting

quite out of hand, yes, about someone none of us know personally. It is

very sad to see such negativity here. disbelief

Peace and love
