I always enjoy reading interviews from ex-Prince band members, especially this one with Lisa, who seems very cool. But I'm really tired of non-black people obsessing with the joke: "I must be black because ... I can play funk, blues, R&B, gospel music, etc.," or "I can act cool" a la Bill Clinton so I am black.'' (No, he was NOT the first black president) LOL.
There's a LOT more to it than that, of course.

Don't get me wrong, I have a healthy sense of humor when it comes to all people, including my own. But -- and I don't believe sweet Lisa meant to be offensive or insensitive -- it is nevertheless tiresome and insulting.

Otherwise, I really did enjoy the read.

But as a black person, I don't find her remarks to be offensive or cliche. I think it is very cool she and Wendy have appreciation for black music but also influence from it. They both grew up listening to 60s funk and some Motown especially Wendy she loved the Ohio Players and Marvin Gaye. It is funny how she called herself a white chick and somewhat willing to take credit with the question of being a black chick but she doesn't acknowledge her half Mexican heritage very often. eek But is all good I love Lisa sense of humor.

I hope everyone enjoying reading this interview. The article is a real treat to us Lisa (and W&L) fans, and Lisa haven't done a solo interview in nearly 20 years from my memory. I like it how Lisa quipped about her and Wendy being black chicks. Yep that is my light skinned sista there having a good time and sense of humor with the interview. lol cool
I didn't know that was Lisa scoring toward the end of PR movie I think the scene when Prince and Appollonia reunite toward the end before he got on stage singing Die 4 U and Baby Im a Star I think that she was referring to. I know Lisa said awhile ago she did some string and scoring work on PR and Under The Cherry Moon but didn't receive the proper credit of her work but was billing as part of Revolution in UTCM, and overall she seem like she is very happy with her film scoring career I always got the impression that Lisa enjoys more of being a composer than being onstage performer. Meanwhile, Wendy has the charmisa, and extrovert, and outgoing so no suprised that she wanted to tour more often than Lisa.
And finally she describes about her love and hate relationship with Prince, and yeah they do have a strange relationship but it is amazing that W&L still putting up with Prince after the way he had treated them (I would kicked P out of my life long time ago like his other protegees). The girls surely got some tough skin and they are from LA and all and so they have to.
I wished the interviewer asked Lisa if they are open to do some other scoring work like in video games, documentaries, and etc. i was thinking about asking Wendy and Lisa on twitter about that if they ever want to consider togetting into scoring video games and I know Lisa used to love play video games just only a few years ago.
.

I want to meet her too. I hope that the girls and Renata will make some good dough off their CDs so they can finance a mini-tour not only in LA but do some couple shows on the east coast.

lol this interview is both interesting and hilarious.

E: I mean, musicians recognize a fellow studio rat. I can just tell. He’s a guy that hangs out in his studio all the time, doing crazy stuff.

L: Yeah, you just like make up things. You’re just there all night long, all day long. You’re making grilled cheese sandwiches with the mike on (laughs), you know...I mean, that’s how it was back then. I’m not kidding, you know. All kinds of those kind of stories, too. Or like one thing that used to be really cool, like, God, I wish I’d remember what song in particular … like the way he’d cut a song. You know, he’d start with the drums but he’d already have the song in his head... And he’d like go and press “Record” on the machine and then run over to the drums and you’d kinda hear like him jumpin’ over things and trippin’ over wires, sit down on the drums, and then count himself off, tick, tick, tick.

And then he’d like play and he’d like have ... sometimes he’d have like a … lyrics written down on a piece of notebook paper and so he’d try to like sing it in his head and sometimes you’d hear him like kinda grunting and singing a little bit of the song on the drum track. And then he’d imagine in his head like … he told me this, like you have to kick the bass player’s ass. Like when you’re playing the drums, like kick the other guy’s ass, like put things in there that’s gonna make the other guy … which was all him, you know … do something unexpected or like, try to keep up, you know. So it was so cool ‘cause then he’d go … he’d do … the drum track would be down and then he’d go and get the bass and play the bass and then that weird drum lick would come up and then he’d go, “Oh,” you know, like the bass player, and then try to keep and then try to kick the guitar player’s ass, etcetera, etcetera. And it was just really cool to sit there. Like, when I first moved out there, I stayed in his house for a while and we’d just be in the studio all the time, and sometimes I’d be the one punching ‘em in or whatever. That was a lot of good stuff.

^ That bit was my favorite.

Lisa is starting up with her "crazy Prince story" about him flying out to see them, "E" interrupts and she never revisits it. Bad journalism, he could come in with his point once she was done.

or the writer could have just been trying to be tactful, letting her change the subject and going with her train of thought rather than needling her for more prince dirt. i think it was generous of her to mention the things she did say in that interview, and i think the writer had a good knowledge of her career. shrug

Yep like ya know?

At least I know now that Wendy and Lisa are indeed want to score video games but so far the music composers in that industry want to keep serious women like W&L out.

I love ya Lisa if you are reading this gurl.

But I am glad that in the interview that Lisa finally confirmed one strong point to the question that us Lisa/W&L fans have been addressing for years to ppl who think that they were dropped because they can't sell albums where there was wayyy more into than meet the eye. The staff changes of the record companies that they signed and therefore they received little support as the staffers didn't knew how to promote Wendy and Lisa because they don't neatly played particular genres of music.

Wow I really didn't realized that Lisa is so candid and talkative. She must drink the Wendy kool aid that day.

But this is to the Lisa fans who would like to see her having her own interview so we can knnow more about her thoughts. Enjoy this interview and shame on Eric Deggans for just now publishing this interview of Ms. Coleman.

Thanks to Renata, Lisa's lovely wife for mention this interview on her twitter.

Thank you, for sharing. I follow Wendy and Lisa on twitter too (http://twitter.com/wendyandlisa) and I just read the interview. There regular tweets keep me laughing and in stitches but this interview shared how they are very true to themselves. I appreciate you sharing with us, ladygirl99!

I wonder when she started reading comics, who her favourite artists are (Jack Kirby? Steve Ditko? Neal Adams? Jim Steranko? Barry Windsor-Smith? Jim Starlin? John Byrne? George Pérez? Jim Lee?), how many comics she buys a month and if she's more into Marvel or DC? biggrin

Superb interview, insight and humor. Prince sending them songs via email and what a eye opener it would be for a fanboy/girl to sit down in the a.m. and see that Prince has sent an email. I think I'd still read my horoscope first to see what my sign is up to.

Sandman is this amazing comic book, its got all kinds of mythology and Neil Gaiman is positively genius in his story telling. He has written some books and has a blog, he seems very approachable and likes to help fellow writers out.

http://journal.neilgaiman.com/

I'd read his work if it was written on toilet paper, I wasn't a fan of comic books until I read Sandman. Good stuff.
Love wins. (Seen on bumpersticker)

Claremont/Byrne, Claremont/Smith Xmen, Miller's Daredevil and Wolfman/Perez on Teen Titans where right up there with Prince in terms of teen obsessions for me.

I discovered that there is lots of crossover between Prince and comics when I spoke to Kevin Smith at the Celebration in '01.

Yeah, Prince is like John Byrne. They both have egos the size of Nebraska, both are past their glory days and when their stuff doesn't sell, they blame everyone but themselves. lol
