Are The Time legends???

A friend of mine asked me this question, and I still can't think of an answer. On one hand, the music they put out was incredibly funky and fun. On the other hand, they didn't write thier own songs or play thier own instruments (At least in the studio).

I think that we can all agree that Morris and the boys made some great music, but do they deserve to be called legends???

well there were many Hands overall Involved in the Studio but that is another topic&time.they had a chance to be a Very Important Band.they were very Legit Live.but Prince F*** it up by pulling a Reverse Gimmick.the trick was to never take the stage.that was a major flaw on his Part.have them Play on Record&Not Be seen.when they got on stage they eat up what was presented in the Studio easily.they were alot more forceful as a Unit than Even Prince knew.they are one of those Acts where you say SHoulda,Coulda,Woulda but weren't allowed to for Politics&Ego-Tripping.and let me state IMHO One Great Album(What Time Is It?),One Pretty Good Album the First one.Two Average to Borderline Average Albums in 84&90 Respectively.Live back in the day they were Happening but by there 4th Album the Magic got sucked out&it showed.so overall while Catchy&alot of Fun&A Scary Band I gotta Say a Quiet No.Hard to say it because I truly dig them alot but they didn't make enough Impact overall IMHO.

they are right there with SOSBand, Debarge, Shalamar, Taste of Honey...

all groups who released great R&B singles, some classic...but thats about it...

to be a legend, i think you need to release solid albums, time and time again, have an identifiable persona *and* kick butt on stage...

Yes, I would consider them to be legends, though sadly short lived. I remember seeing them in concert when they toured with Prince. You know how when a band opens for the lead act, people are more or less there to see the lead? Well, the Time DEFINITELY did not suffer that problem. They got as much, if not more, repsonse from the audience than Prince did on more than one occasion. They were more than just a band that got up there and played great music that you grooved to. They were a complete act with a cast of characters, the whole nine.

It really is too bad they couldn't have continued on because they used to turn it OUT in concert!!

Without a doubt legends...
Everyone knows who they are and their sound. Many artists do not write and produce their own material. Does this mean that they're not legends? Look at the long list of artists you would have to exclude it that was your only criteria. Better yet, ask yourself what impact did The Time have on the music scene and were they unique? Were they on-top of their game? How do you judge a legend?

I wouldn't think so. They were entertaining, but to acquire legendary status requires a string of influential albums. The Time were simply Prince's favorite protoge for awhile, and no true legend is a protoge.

Without a doubt! The Time are legends in my book. Who cares if they didn't write any of their stuff. They made a huge impact in the music the music world. They should have a star and be in the rock and roll hall of fame.

The Time put out musice that was so far ahead of the times that now we are finally diggin it. I think that this group will go down in history as one of the funkest bands of all times.

Yes.
The majority of people know them by either " The Bird" or " Jungle Love" and they have made a living with those songs.
But, the funk of the matter is they can kill you with their chicken grease. Therefore, they can be Funk Legends!

By the way, I would run out and buy a new album from them without even hearing a sample:)

With Jam & Lewis I just down understand why they don't put something out on a label. Or a greatest hits CD with a few new songs thrown in.. Old Dawgs New Tricks.
