...from what I remember, her stage performances during Prince sets were far beneath her capabilities. In my estimation she was pretty objectified as a stage ornament, although I'm sure on the converse side it was incredible in many ways to be part of such a huge machine as the one surrounding Prince at such a tender age. I only had a few chances to glimpse her dancing in more conservative styles (for lack of better expression), with the influence of modern, ballet, and Middle Eastern, and in those instances her talent was clear, apparent and without question. However when the bulk of your appearances are spent stage diving, hair flipping, and tootsie rolling across stadium stages and nightclubs against the backround of Shoop re-mixes and "The Pope", it's hard for people to recall the seriousness and devotion of your classical training. In any event, great to see she's still out there, and hope to see more of her dance work on a more serious note. She's got chops.

Fierce response...and dead on! My problem with Mayte dancing was not really Mayte, it was how Prince presented her. I like her ALOT more now that she is her own person. IMO I think Cat was "allowed" to be herself so she connected with the audience more. I totally agree with Mayte being more of a prop for Prince. She clearly had(has) strong abilities as a dancer.

stage diving, hair flipping, and tootsie rolling....OMG you said it! falloff falloff falloff

All of Prince dancers where just okay. I mean I didn't see anything special about any of his dancers from past to present. If you ever watch So You Think You Can Dance performances....I would say I never seen Prince dancers dance like that. It would be nice to see Prince use something like Janet Jackson or Madonna back up dancers for his shows.

I am a dancer too and I dance professionally. Here is my input:

Mayte is a good dancer. She definitely has some classical training. Her posture and expression are indeniable. However, she lacks energy. She does not show enough fierce. She,s too calm and too sainty.

You did not ask about Cat but if people mention her, it,s because she sure was dancing onto Prince,s music like nobody else has. Even to me, she was number one. She was a natural dancer and just needed to hear Prince play to let her body do all the work as if her dancing and his music were making love on stage which left many of us thinking the way we do about Cat. Although a bit too full of herself at times.

Peace!

No. Neither was Cat. They were both just okay dancers who had a certain personality and look that Prince liked. I can't think of a single thing that either of them ever did that made me think "wow, that was awesome dancing there." I can't think of anything Cat did other than pop locking badly and jacking her torso. How's that great dancing?

Mayte was only slightly better because she did dance with a little more finesse when she wasn't just poking her butt out for Prince's amusement.

I'm a dancer at a biker-bar*,
and from that limited field of expertise,
I'd say,
yeah. She's not bad.

* Though, according to my tax records, technically, I'm an entertainer (rolleyes).
And though that makes this career sound more glamorous than it really is,
it's enough to suit my current lifestyle.
Which is basically, just going from quick "fix" to another.
So from my perspective, I guess what I really am, is a freespirit.

Yes, Cat was a fantastic dancer too, not trained, but a very, very good natural dancer! The only thing I can't bear with Cat is her feet eek , as a trained dancer myself, those feet drive me crazy... she really needed to point those toes!! lol

nod Lawd, yes! One of the first things they taught us in dance, every time your foot comes off the floor POINT YOUR TOES. I have to agree, that's my big pet peeve with Cat, but she was jammin' tho! dancing jig

Do you guys have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Here's a newsflash. Prince does not make classical music or Broadway show tunes. This is not fucking Broadway. All this talk about classical training and "pointing those toes" is seriously wrong headed. In pop music (particularly black music) no one wants to see some fucking prissy, formal shit. Do you think Michael Jackson, James Brown or MC Hammer ever had dance lessons? Of course they didn't. And if they did they wouldn't be half as good. No dance teacher can teach that shit.

If we were all to adopt your dance teacher's maxims then we'd have to dismiss all street dancing as worthless because it lacks "technique". Needless to say that would be stupid. It's like saying Michael Jordan was a bad basketball player because he didn't keep his back straight. It's totally missing the point.
