I started training as a dancer back in 1980 and I'm still teaching (and learning) to this day.
Comparing Cat and Mayte is like comparing Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Mayte and Astaire were trained to be dancers, and ofc they had ability and talent but Cat and Kelly simply were dancers, it was what they were before they were taught the moves. You can't teach people what they had, it is something you just have inside you. Watching Astaire dance never moved me the way watching Kelly did, likewise Mayte didn't enhance Prince's music/performance for me the way Cat did. Cat used her body like another musical instrument when she was performing with Prince, Mayte was just an embellishment I could have done without. Mayte was a technician, but Cat was a dancer! imo  There is a crack, a crack in everything - that's how the light gets in. | |

If it were left up to me, I would have to say that Cat definitely was a better dancer. She had more soul,funk,life,energy,and she really can get the crowd excited. Mayte was very talented, I will have to say that. She was classically trained, but I do not know if it fit well with Prince's music. As far as classical ballet and belly dance, Mayte had it made. But when it came to hip/hop and soul dancin', IDK if she was up to the part. I remember when I saw a live performance of Endorphin Machine, Mayte was dancing, but I do not know what she was doin'!!! She swung her head around so much, I thought that she was going to eventually give herself a wiplash!!! I don't know. If that is how she dances outside of her field, that is pretty horrible. Besides, Cat was a double threat, she could dance and sing, while singing wasn't so much of Mayte's thing!! | |

okay i've gotten myself 2gether again ..ahem ... mayte is a GREAT DANCER, from the elegance of her ballerina style of dancing outshines anything cat has ever tried 2 do in that area. her belly dancing is a thing of beauty as well, her only flaw is that when it came 2 the hip hop/rave dancing there were things lacking but hey 2/3 ain't bad ... well i feel like cat was more orginal no she's not trained but i think that what mad her so great she had her own flavor i see prince maybe felt that way to he let her choreograph his tours( which mayte did not) and she was nonmimated in 87' for best choreographer at the mtv awards he even let her work his side projects like the madhouse video and shelia e. in the koo koo video and seeing footage of them live cat had more energy and prince and her chemistry was like no other
