Women who have copied Vanity in one way or another

I was just noticing how many women in the last 25 years have copied Vanity in terms of either style or music.

-Cher: in her late '80's video "If I Could Turn Back Time", Cher wears an outfit that looks almost exactly like something Vanity wore while in Vanity 6.

-Madonna: the whole lingerie-on-stage-thing (again Vanity 6). Also, on Vanity's 2nd album Skin on Skin, one of the backup singers is Donna de Lory. Madonna must have liked the sound of the album, as she then snatched up de Lory from late '80's to the mid '90s to do work on her albums.

-Janet Jackson: of course the song "Nasty" which was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, had some of the attitude of "Nasty Girl". Like Vanity, Janet began doing the talk-singing thing in songs once she hooked up with Jam and Lewis. Janet also borrowed some of Vanity's hair and clothing styles of the mid-late 80's. Is it any coincidence that Jam and Lewis wanted to give the sweet and young Janet (whose initial albums didn't sell well and had a much more generic sound to them) a more attitude-filled edge that Vanity had?

-Apollonia-duh. Even after she left Prince, Apples still tried to dress like Vanity.

-Pussy Cat Dolls and Danity Kane-they obviously (whether they know it or not) were created in the same image as Vanity 6, in terms of clothing style (or lack there of), lyrics and provocative dance moves. While Nicole Schwerzinger is a major vocal talent, nothing about the PCD or Danity Kane grous is original.

I know Vanity wasn't a good singer, but her musical style (lyrics and sound of songs) are still seen today.

They have since been taken off of youtube, but there were even some Vanity interviews from the '80's in which a lot of the hosts always said how original she was and how other girls in the buisness were emulating her. I'm sure there are even more women in the entertainment business who imitated Vanity's influential looks or style over the years, but I can't remember them all. Isn't it "funny" that many of the ones who copied Vanity went on to become more successful than her?

nod agreed on that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cher (she was out in 1965!)I remember the show her and Sonny had when I was little she was wearing the skimpy outfits then too!

Janet Jackson was out before Vanity as well. She started out on televsion as a kid later became a star and WAS NOT in no way copying Vanity. She was on the scene in 1982,musically that is!
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...iscography

Madonna was around a bit before Vanity as well. Her first album was in 1983!
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...3_album%29

I watched all these so called fashions(how they dressed) then as well.

I dont see HOW these people you claim copied her(Vanity) at all rolleyes

While she MAY have put her foot into the door on the scene in "82 she really didnt get noticed until "84 AFTER PR was out.

Obviously Cher was out before Vanity. I never said Cher copied EVERYTHING! Cher is one of the most original artists-I was just saying Cher's outfit for her late '80's video "If I Could Turn Back Time" looks A LOT like Vanity's outfit from Vanity 6. Cher wore all kinds of revealing outfits back in the day, but she DIDN'T dress like she did in that video in her earlier days. She didn't wear the leather jacket with fishnets, high boots and bathing suit/lingerie top. Maybe she wore 1 of them with a different combo, but not like the kind Vanity had. That's all. Just that one little thing.

Let's compare them:

1982

1989

Notice the similar leather jackets, fishnets, bathing suit/lingerie top...

toots, I don't think you understood my post, or if you did, you didn't read it carefully. I know Janet Jackson and Madonna started out at the same time as Vanity. Again, I never said EVERYTHING, but some of their ideas were taken from Vanity's image/sound. I said in the beginning Janet Jackson had a very different sound until Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis hooked up with her, which was in 1986. In 1986, Janet became very different (more attitude, different look and singing style) from her tv and early album days.

As for Madonna, again, I'm talking about Madonna's late 80's into early 90's stuff. I wasn't talking about her earlier stuff!

Furthermore, while Vanity didn't become really famous until 1984, people in the industry started noticing her outfits and stage act during the 1999 tour. She was getting a lot of press for her daring outfits and style, and I'm sure that other artists at the time took notice.

I hate to bust your bubble dear but Vanity wasnt on the 1999 tour it was Jill Jones! I beg to differe with you on the Cher dressing in skimpy clothes like you just posted re-read my post again Cher DID in fact dress like that on her show I remember I was a kid thanks, I watched that show faithfully as well( parents were also fans)

I read your post perfectly and so did others(like flowerz even she understood you post) I sure dont see you jumping on others for correcting you and providing links now do I ? hmm

No need to get snippy when I grew up in that time period I kNEW the style and such mmmmmkay.

I think you shoud re-read your own original post!

Another point I want to make is that Apples didnt have a choice to look like Vanity Prince MADE HER dress like Vanity since he was the one in control of it all!

Another point Danity Kane and Pussy Cat Dolls was out after Vanity that does not mean they copied her in anyway shape or form they can have their influences from other acts or people not just Vanity!

toots-the only one who posted links to "correct me" was you, and those were to wikipedia to tell me when Cher, Madonna, and Janet all started their careers. I know when they started.

You're wrong about the 1999 tour. Jill Jones was there, but she did backup on it. Vanity was also on the 1999 tour, along with Prince, the time, Susan and Brenda. The pic of Vanity I posted was from her performing on that tour.

About Cher, I'm not talking about wearing skimpy outfits in general-I know she did that. I specifically meant her outfit in the pic I posted. Maybe she wore a leather dress way back on her tv show, but did it look as much like Vanity's outfit (fishnets, high boots, lingerie top/bathing suit bottom) as her 1989 outfit did? How can a dress look like Vanity's outfit-they are totally different!

About Apollonia-again I also mentioned after she left Prince. If you notice her in pictures, she still looked like she was trying to copy Vanity.

As for PCD, Danity Kane-of course they didn't copy Vanity alone. In appearance though and how they are all provocative, didn't Vanity go where no other female act had gone before her time and take it up a notch in the early '80s? It's so common now, but who else did that before Vanity? Sure there were sexy performers, but not as blatantly and in your face as Vanity. The girls today do that without even thinking about it!

The reason for the links I posted was to point out when their first ALBUMS were re-leased! Seems like you skipped that part.

One easy answer CHER!

Jill didnt do back up all the time! Were you there for a concert during that tour? I remember Jill doing a couple of songs that is it!

I for one wont answer again seems like your wanting a heated debate rather then a social discussion. People post links all the time, I was trying to back up what flowerz also had said to you and as what I said to you!

Next time... please... think before starting a thread like this one.nod

OK then, here's my last response:

Your links weren't relevant, because I wasn't talking about their first albums! Everything I was talking about was after 1983. You keep implying that I'm talking about the entire careers of Cher, Janet and Madonna, which I'm not. I'm only mentioning specific time periods after Vanity was in Vanity 6.

Maybe the 1999 tour had varied shows for the different cities, but Vanity was very much a part of it. There are numerous pictures of her on the tour on this very site + other sites, and youtube every now and then has a live "Nasty Girl" performance clip from the 1999 tour.

Again-Cher was totally original in her early performances/tv show, but she didn't perform in the blatantly and sometimes shocking sexual manner that Vanity did. For her time, Cher was sexual, but they wouldn't have allowed Vanity's antics on tv back then. You know that. Vanity's performances were nearly pornographic in the concerts. Cher had more class/talent so she didn't have to do that wink

This wouldn't have been such an argument if you had read more clearly instead of just generalizing what I was saying. rolleyes

they say Prince created Vanity after the Black Emmanuelle,a porno star of the 70's?

I am not sure that Vanity dressed that way before she met Prince. I think Vanity's dress and her persona was created by Prince... then she took off with it and added even more.

I have heard that Prince could not handle Vanity... she was too over the top with him and in private life Prince is sort of a prude.

In my opinion, I think that like other said... Janet etc who are accused of copping Vanity's look was simply dressing what was in.

I don't think Madonna was dressing like Vanity... Vanity was more glamour sexy like porno stars... high heels etc. Madonna wore those leggings with flat baby doll shoes, scars/bandanas on her head, and fishnet gloves, shirts over torn t-shirts. I remember because my college roommate would dress just like Madonna... she looked like she dressed from the Salvation Army.

Janet had sexy/big hair... but we all did. She wore black baggy pants, tuxedo shirts, blazers and men ties... not a Vanity look at all.

Cher did use Vanity style in that video but take notice... Cher was older, looking for a comeback and her song was about "turn back time". It would be natural for Cher to borrow a sexy look.

oh, I agree that Madonna copped a lot of look and style from Marilyn. I think she went platinum blond just to look more like Marilyn. But she started coping Marilyn with Material girl video, and that song and video was all about Marilyn's Diamonds are a Girl's Best friend movie.

When I think of Madonna's early career style, I think of this...

and this

To me, in a celebrity's early career is when you really see the personality... there is no image to protect, no album or movie to support etc. Usually debut album or first breakout role is when you really see the celebrity's real style. Then they hire image consultants, PR persons, and wardrobe people to help them project the image they need to be a star etc. But very early, they can't afford a stylist so they go with what feels right to them.

With that in mind...
