Sheila E on Magic Johnson's late night show One of the worst decisions she could ever have made. Let's face it: it was incredibly embarrassing that she took that job as Magic's bandleader. I remember reading a review of the first night of that pathetic show where Sheila said on the air that she was 'just glad to have a job'. Huh? She made herself look totally desperate. Then the show itself was so bad it made Chevy Chase's show look like Johnny Carson. Once you do a show like that its hard for people to take you seriously after that. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

That show was a train wreck. The best part about it was that it gave Howard Stern something to devote so much time to making fun of.
Sheila certainly took her share of hits from it. I think people did think it was embarrassing for her and that she was desperate. The "Win a Date with Sheila E." contest was a low point. On the other hand, years later, I don't think Sheila really has to worry about it. Magic takes all the blame, and rightfully so, for how bad the show was, and I don't think anybody attributes it to Sheila. So she gets the credit for being the first female bandleader on a late-night show, which is a nice distinction, and she doesn't have to deal too much with any embarrassment about it.

"Once you do a show like that its hard for people to take you seriously after that." I disagree, Sheila E continues to be one of the most respected female performers of our time. If she needed a gig at the time there was nothing wrong with her accepting the job especially since it was a new show headed by a NBA legend. Maybe you dont take her seriously but many artists do. Since that show Sheila has worked with TONS of artists including the biggest female artist at the moment Beyonce. I doubt that show had any negative influence on her career if anything Sheila E is much more respected, admired and well known than ever before. She is the $h!t, Dont hate! Actually she was the only reason why I watched the show. I wanted to send a videotape in of me behind my drumkit for the "Win A Date" contest but I bailed out. I don't even remember if anyone won the contest.
But I'm sure she received a decent paycheck....She was the only good thing on his show.

Yeah, the "win a date with Sheila E" was defintely a low point.
HOWEVER...she DID make history as the FIRST female band leader for a late night show. Can we at least give her props for that? By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!
