The Time: Would a comeback album work in 2008?

I love The Time's back catalogue (and I think I'm one of the few who even dug Pandemonium).

But I can't imagine what The Time would sound like 18 years since their last record (and even then, songs like Chocolate and Jerk Out date way back to the mid-eighties).

I would love to see the guys release a new record, but in this age of drab, generic R&B I wonder whether they could deliver anything contemporary which didn't sound like it was pandering to todays bland music scene.

What do you guys think?

I seriously doubt that it would be commercially successful but it is conceivable for it to be artistically great. I'd love to hear the original group make new music.

When I say "contemporary" I don't mean commercial or aiming for chart success.

It's just that their whole sound is so synonymous with 80s synths it's hard to imagine what they'd come up with nowadays.

If they let Terry and Jimmy Jam produce it they'd make sure it sounded contemporary. But I'd rather they go old school all the way - contemporary sounds be damned!

Anxiety

i think if the original line-up put together a new QUALITY album of original music, it would at the very least be a sleeper hit.

if they coupled this with a decent greatest hits comp and a tour where they're playing nice clubs instead of ribfests and whatnot (which is fine, but just for one tour they should class it up a bit), i think they could have a comeback that would do them some justice.

I think when you have Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Jesse in the band damn right they could put an album together that works with or without Prince.

You never know. Of course it's not as if they'd do big numbers to be in competition with Top 40 artists...but they do have a loyal, age appropriate following. I think so many older people are tired of having nothing in the commercial marketplace to suit their musical tastes, so they do go out and support acts from their generation via shows and buying their music.... it seems like a lot of older acts are either reuniting groups, touring, etc recently. Seems like if they wanted to do a comeback, now could be an a good time, especially since they can take advantage of all the new technological and cyberspace advances to help with marketing and reaching their niche audience.

Really? Prince himself has released any number of bombs soley on his own, so i don't see any guidance on his part as being critical to them having a sucessful project.

If anything they need to make sure Jimmy and Terry are on board.

It will never happen.

It's been on the cards so many times. In 95, 98, 2002 and now 2008...

Believe it when I see it.

It would require everyone being on board and willing to work together.
You would think by now these guys could do this since they are all middle aged men who should have learned a thing or two about life by now.
They need to put their pride aside and not worry about who is in control or who gets the credit or royalties and just work together.

I know they could create magic if they just layed down their pride and worked together. Of course, P should be involved too, after all he created them.
Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

who knows if it would sell or not, but not many people can match Jam and Lewis's success when it comes to making a hit record. As long as Jesse is laying down those killer riffs I could care less. If they are happy with the record, thats all that really matters

I'm with you Rhastus (how are you man BTW???) ... they are all good writers (Jimmy, Terry & Monte particualarly) so it'll be nice. Jam & lewis did a great job with the recent Chaka and EW&F CDs so they know how to make a retro sounding albeit contemporary friendly album.

What would be great is if YOU could skip the related artists forum in general.

You never have anything to contribute other than "they suck without Prince", "prince is the greatest" etc. etc. Seriously, do yo have anything else to say??

You post the same thing on EVERY thread. Why bother? It's annoying and to be honest, it makes you come across like a very simple-minded person or perhaps a 6 year old.

I'd rather have remasters of the first two albums with bonus tracks lol That would excite me much more than a new album would.

Let's not count out Monte. I don't understand why Monte, Jimmy, Terry and Jesse can't do an album by themselves. These guys have written and produced some great songs (including on the Pandemonium album). I think that Pandemonium didn't have the proper singles issued. I think Jerk Out was a great lead single, but Sometimes I Get Lonely, Blondie, etc. would have made better 2nd singles than the 1980s-sounding Chocolate.
