Bobby Z's drum kit ? Hya,
does anyone know the *exact* specifications of the drum kit Bobby Z used during the Purple Rain tour and in addition to that, maybe also the specs of his drum kit during the Parade tour ? I'm interested in as many details i can get, especially what kind of trigger pads/toms, what was the bassdrum, which sound module(s), how was the stuff wired, what drum machine, had he an additional acoustic snare and so on. I kinda know what drum machines were used during the production of the respective Prince records (Linn Drum, Oberheim etc.), so that's not what i mean - i'm interested in the live gear specifics ! I googled around but haven't found anything useful so maybe someone could help me out here ? Thanks ! [Edited 5/23/08 8:56am]

Good luck though, Bobby isn't exactly in the pantheon of greatest drummers, so info will be pretty scarce Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

wasn't it pretty much a simmons pad kit going into a Linn Drum - judging from the video for America, which was recorded on the heels of the Purple Rain tour. Prince runs up and plays a drum solo at the end of the video, so there's a lot of focus on the kit at that time.

From what I remember from the live shows and footage, during PR I don't think Bobby had Simmons pads yet at least not the octagonal ones you see in the America Video which was a year later (I'm not sure those were even out yet).
I seem to remember seeing these 4 round drum heads that were really shallow, mounted in a square pattern kinda high up. They looked like practice pads. I thought they might be electronic durms or pads. I don't know what pads/triggers he used but he clearly was hooked into the Linn LM-1. In fact during PR tour, I think mainly triggered the LM-1 PATTERNS and just played cymbals over them. I don't think Prince used Oberheim drum machines. just oberheim synths
