Vanity 6 "Nasty Girl" vs. other "Nasty" songs As we all know, "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 is a classic. I'm curious though as to how y'all think it compares to other classic "Nasty" songs.
Which song does everyone like better: "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 (1982), or "Nasty" by Janet Jackson (1986)? I'm positive that the Janet Jackson song was in part inspired by Prince's Vanity 6 song, since Jackson worked on it with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Does anyone know more about this? There are some aspects of the song that make it look like to me that Janet was trying to copy Vanity a little bit. First, notice how Janet talk/sings like Vanity, and secondly the "badass cool" attitude she tries to emote. Of course, Vanity was more blatantly sexy, but they both went for the controlling/tough image. I'm sure that Janet Jackson and Vanity knew a lot of the same people too. To add to the situation, of course, the media tried to create a Prince/Michael Jackson feud/rivalry... Secondly, does everyone know about a song called "Nasty Gal" by Betty Davis in 1975? (Check youtube if you haven't heard it-it's there). I never knew about it until recently, but the vibe of the song sounds a lot like Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl". "Nasty Gal" is so funky that Prince was probably influenced by it. "Nasty Girl" really sounds like Prince's own personal spin on the 1975 funk jam. Does anyone know anything about this? It can't be a coincidence can it? Finally, which "nasty" song is the best: "Nasty Gal", "Nasty Girl", or "Nasty"? Personally, I like all 3 songs, but "Nasty Girl" is my favorite.

Praise be to Betty, that woman is absolutely too funky for words! Nasty Gal brings forth Betty's raw emotion perfectly; It's brash, aggressive, take-charge, domineering, and of course funky. The guitar work that wraps itself around her emotionally charged voice is hypnotic.
I'm a big Janet fan, but Nasty is just so-so to me. More into tracks from that era such as What Have You Done For Me Lately, Pleasure Principle, Funny How Time Flies. IMO, the tour de' force is definitely Nasty Girl. I could blabber onwards for days about why this song is delectable, but the magic is apparent for fans both old and new. The mystique, Vanity's deliverance, Prince's production (and to think, it was only 1982...so ahead of it's time!), catchy chorus, crooning break, vain prerequisite of 7 inches or more being Vanity's only requirement in her partner, inquisition as to whether her partner is going cum, and the sheer culmination of disappointment at the end; It's just thee perfect song to me! http://www.last.fm/user/somebodyunot

I say Nasty Girl because the song is so ahead of its time. It sounds as good today as it did 26 years ago. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Not to mention, Nasty Girl is like 2 songs in one.
"I don't like this groove. Try and give me something I can croon to. Then the fellas change it up into a new jam (or is Prince doing all the instruments? I know the album says The Time). No one can say "Unnhhh. It's time to jam" Like Vanity!
