josh is princes most inaudiable bass player right from the first days prince's music always had prominent bass guitar in the mix.
his sound changed over years but prominent fat funky bass was always there . but now days i can't hear bass when i listen to prince live recordings. i don't know if the problem is in josh or prince want him to sound that way but josh playing is so burried in the mix he sounds only proffesional and nothing more then that. i can describe rhonda, brown mark ,levi ,sonny t,andre they all had their distinctive styles very characteristic for them. i don't know how can i describe joshs playing ,i can only say inaudiable. his wife is great addition to the band but i don't know if i can say the same for josh

I haven't really paid as much attention to his back up singers/musicians lately. In the past they seemed to stand out a lot more with their own identity, but lately seem regulated to the background

Actually, after finally hearing some of the O2 shows, I've decided that this band kicks it harder and tighter than the Musicology band.
Yeah, John Blackwell was impressive, but Cora is MUCH tighter, and has a sick amount of power as well. It has been absolutely wonderful 2 see Renato Neto back in the regular lineup. As long as Mike "no soul" Scott never comes back on guitar, I'm straight with the lineup as it is... PEACE. "He's a musician's musician..."

I just realised that I didn't say anything about Josh on Bass.
There have been MANY times when Mark Brown and Levi were down in the mix, live. Rhonda was the only Bassist that really stood out in the mix live. Other than that, Josh is SOLID and tight, just as Cora is. "He's a musician's musician..."

he's just a waste of electricity on stage Couldn't have said it better myself. Not only is his bass playing he appears to have the charisma of pet rock. Where's the energy, the funk face? How ya gonna play the bass and not be funky?

How ya gonna play the bass and not be funky? Well.....Josh got the gig(and has kept it) and countless other bass players didn't..... So PRINCE must feel he's doing something right. I've talked to Josh on several occassions and he has stated P is very specific about what he wants bass wise. Tone.....4 or 5 string...etc...I remeber when Rhonda first came on board and she had the 5 string...6 string....fretless etc.. and P said she struggled playing "let's work"?!..towards the last few yrs of her run she was strictly 4 string fender jazz....except for that upright she used on very few songs....and she wasn't struggling w/ "let's work" as much. Also you have to remember Josh is playing a greater catalog of tunes the others didn't have the pressure of duplicating. He's gotta do over 30 yrs worth of work!!!! Prince's shows are more musical now than they've ever been. I love BM,Sonny and Rhonda but they had the P doin' splits, slides, jumping on speakers etc. The P Josh has is straight "play"! Not to mention they're doin "Footprints", "What is Hip?" and other tunes in addition to P's catalog.

Thank you for your post which makes much sense as to Josh's role I guess he's just playing as opposed to being a personality and funny I don't hear PRINCE giving him solo spotlights not since i've seen various shows.... I still agree with devotedpuppy with him being a pet rock

We post about our opinions about P's music.....Josh makes a living playing P's music w/P!!!! Who wouldn't want that gig? Anybody else would be doing the same thing or simply get the axe. Let's not cast stones people....
