B...Do you know anything about the infamous interview Jesse did after he left The Time? I think it was called "Prince is an A$$hole" where he rips him apart?

U know, I've only heard about that article but I never saw it printed. I heard that Jesse went off in print. Not surprised. Those cats had beef.

But u know, to be fair to Prince, it was Jesse who I thought looked like he was bitting off of P during Jesse's albumremember when P was wearing the wide brim Spanish hat during Parade (which of course was from Hendrix) and that was cool. Then Jesse comes slanging with these HUGE wide brim Spanish hats with little tassle like fur balls hanging from the brim. With a veil like material hanging dow. It was a combo of P's hat from Parade AND from the video When Doves Cry with the veil on P's hat. I was like "Damn Jesse...u KNOW good and well u took that shit from Prince." He wore it in the "Crazy" video and "Black In America". I can get with all of the other stuff Morris was hipping me to before the 1999 era purple. Although P was sliding into the color purple during the Controversy period. His trench was a light mauve color and the name on the Controversy album was purple. He wasn't wearing outright purple clothing as of yet on tour. H embraced the theme of purple a lot more of course on the 1999 album and tour.

Blackguitaristz: I love Prince because he's such a hot mess (and a great performer)....I've been hearing asshole stories about him for years. I heard he was REALLY terrible to Brown Mark. I've got a question, Do ALL or most of the guys Prince came up with see him as a genius or musically gifted or do they see him as someone who was no more or less talented as they were but was more opportunistic? I've read your post and Dez's book. I don't know what Dez and Princes relationship is now, but at the time he had an amicable relationship with him at least up to 2003. He said basically what you said (when you were referring to the "Purple") Dez said Prince didn't start dressing "wild" until he saw how Dez dressed and that Prince would always "borrow" ideas, but take them to the next level. But at no time did he ever downplay Prince as a master musician or performance skills. I was just wondering, even if they hate him, don't speak to him, or are still pissed off by his antics in the past, do they feel he deserves the "musical genius" label? You don't have to name names, but just a general consensus.

Good question. Andre and Morris both give P his props. No doubt about it. Do they feel P is a musical genius? I doubt it. Do they think he was a hard worker, extremely dedicated? Most definately. When those cats went to sleep, when they awoke the next morning, P had two new songs. See what I'm saying? That's how P was. I think P was a hella naturally gifted cat. More so than the others? Maybe not. BUT P WORKED at it more than anybody else. He practiced more. He wrote more. He sung more. He woodsheded. So it was so sharp that it cut glass. PLUS he surrounded himself with very talented people with cool images. As talented as P was and as hard as he worked, he was as perceptive. P knew what to "lift" from and "who" to lift from. I think for those reasons, at the end of the day, all of those cats have to give it up to P cuz P did what he needed to do. No matter who got in the way. Didn't matter. Ever hear Jimmy and Terry talk about P? Still to this day, they praise the shit out of Prince. They don't have to do that. But they do it cuz that's what they truly believe. Jimmy has said more than once that they wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for P. He said that they learned so much from working with P. Being around P. His work ethic was off the hook. I think all of them admire P for that.

dude you should know how much i respect and value your opinion / credibility but as I have said many times before - if any so called associated artist were as much of a bad ass genius as prince then WHERE is their SOTT, P.Rain, the 30 year career, the ability to write and produce some of the catchiest music ever, the awards, the concert ticket sales based on an amazing live rep', the countless styles of great tracks, etc, etc, etc. Hard work is only part of the story, are you telling me if Morris Jesse or Andre worked as hard as P did they'd get close to his genius?, not a chance. We've all heard their solo efforts and whilst they are O.K. i don't think a single one stands up to P at his worst.P just has that magic ultra charesmatic quality that the others have in small amounts but nowhere nearenough to have crazy ass fools like us watching every move for 30 years!.

That's funny. I also thought Jesse kind of bit P's vibe with the wide and big brims also. They must have had the same taylor wink. It would be great to hear P and Jesse go in the studio and just do a straight, balls out rock and roll guitar jam. No vocals, just a rockin' guitar duel. Knowing P, he probably has something in his vaults from 80 or 81.

Haha!...Good post. You're not going to get an arguement from me on that, player. I agree witcha...Understand,....I'm not comparing any of the cats to P. Overall, none of them could fuck with P. I was only speaking on P's work ethic. I also noted that P is a hella naturally talented cat. ALL of the things I mentioned is what makes P above the rest. I don't want to short change P's work ethic and the commitment that he showed. Because that had a lot to do with why he was so successful. Not just because he was talented. And I also was speaking on how I felt Morris & Dre saw P. Jesse is the only cat that could give P a run for his money on axe that was in P's clique. Mark would make P sit his bass down in a corner somewhere. Prince could not fuck with Mark when it came to bass playing. Mark could play anything P would ever come up with on the bass and then, take it to another level. Mark was a bassist. P was a cat that could play bass. Huge difference. But again overall, nobody that worked with P had the amount of talent, overall, that P had or has. Nobody could play everything as well as P could. Meaning Mark also played guitar, drums and keys. Was Mark as good as a keyboardist or guitarist as P was? Fuck no. Here's an even better example; Andre grew up playing piano, bass, guitar and drums just like P did. Can Andre out play P on any of those instruments? Nah...not even close. Is Andre a better singer than P is? Songwriter, performer? Come on...Dre's my boy but nah. He'll tell u this. Nobody in P's camp could do all of what P did BETTER than P.

I did not say anything about when P started liking the color Purple. I am saying it is on the front of a "79" album. This is before Jesse came along.

I think, though, you're missing the point of what is being said. Just because the color purple was in the "Prince" typeface of a mostly blue (other than P's face and back shot) album cover does not mean Prince was "working" the color. that is the point as I read it.

-----
What about the demo tape with the song "Leaving For New York" The song has a line in it about "sitting on my purple lawn. I think P was using the color Purple long before Jesse came along since this demo would have been prior to his recording contract.

That's true. I didn't see P in concert live untill the Controversy tour. P wasn't wearing any thing purple on that show. But he indeed had purple lettering on the album cover and he was wearing a mauve colored trench on the cover as well. The Time opened up for P and Jesse wasn't wearing pink either. BUT, Jesse did have pink speakers and a pink guitar. This was before The Time's second album was released. Like I said before, there's no telling how long P has dug the color purple. Perhaps all of his life. But what Morris was talking about was when P actually started to promote the color or be identified by it, or to wear the color purple. Morris said he believed Jesse gave P the idea to actually start wearing the color when he saw Jesse doing his thing with pink.
