I've got a question, Do ALL or most of the guys Prince came up with see him as a genius or musically gifted or do they see him as someone who was no more or less talented as they were but was more opportunistic? I've read your post and Dez's book. I don't know what Dez and Princes relationship is now, but at the time he had an amicable relationship with him at least up to 2003. He said basically what you said (when you were referring to the "Purple") Dez said Prince didn't start dressing "wild" until he saw how Dez dressed and that Prince would always "borrow" ideas, but take them to the next level. But at no time did he ever downplay Prince as a master musician or performance skills. I was just wondering, even if they hate him, don't speak to him, or are still pissed off by his antics in the past, do they feel he deserves the "musical genius" label? You don't have to name names, but just a general consensus. Good question. Andre and Morris both give P his props. No doubt about it. Do they feel P is a musical genius? I doubt it. Do they think he was a hard worker, extremely dedicated? Most definately. When those cats went to sleep, when they awoke the next morning, P had two new songs. See what I'm saying? That's how P was. I think P was a hella naturally gifted cat. More so than the others? Maybe not. BUT P WORKED at it more than anybody else. He practiced more. He wrote more. He sung more. He woodsheded. So it was so sharp that it cut glass. PLUS he surrounded himself with very talented people with cool images. As talented as P was and as hard as he worked, he was as perceptive. P knew what to "lift" from and "who" to lift from. I think for those reasons, at the end of the day, all of those cats have to give it up to P cuz P did what he needed to do. No matter who got in the way. Didn't matter. Ever hear Jimmy and Terry talk about P? Still to this day, they praise the shit out of Prince. They don't have to do that. But they do it cuz that's what they truly believe. Jimmy has said more than once that they wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for P. He said that they learned so much from working with P. Being around P. His work ethic was off the hook. I think all of them admire P for that. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

For me, P just has it all up and down - to this day. That man is so gifted in the looks department that it is ridiculous. I haven't met any of the others, but Prince's charisma and natural sex appeal are off the charts as well. Someone on mediatakeout.com once said that no one pulled as many dimes as Prince and I think they are right. Jesse might have gotten some ladies back in the day, but judging by his list of conquests, P didn't have anything to worry about. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I think it's cool that you are getting the straight dope from PEOPLE WHO WERE ACTUALLY THERE. Yeah I read an interview with them some years back, Jimmy and Terry do give him his props. Genius is such a weird term. I think he's brilliant and completely irritating at the same time. But I always, always, always liked that he commits and stands behind his decisions wrong or right and keeps it moving. More than his music I dig that about him (though I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of his antics). I also want to know if Prince's synth sound from 1982-86 his "own" creation? Or was he in the studio with so and so, heard something, said ah ha! and then ran with it?

JeriCurl said: blackguitaristz said: Exactly. So, Black I coundn't tempt U with a Scooby snack 2 get anymore P stories (Ala- Huckie).....what about 2 scooby snacks? Haha!! Throw in another Scooby snack and we got a deal!...Nah seriously,...As much as I have posted on here about J.J., which to some, it may seem a lot, but in actuality, it's been very little that I've told. I'll mainly speak on things that ties in to stuff dealing with music. Being a musician and a rock guitarist myself, LONG before I had worked with Morris and Andre (Andre, who I had first met when I was 18) I grew up idolizing (after Hendrix, of course) and pattering myself to a large degree from Prince, Dez and Jesse. I could have long ago wrote stuff that I knew quite of few people on here simply didn't know about that I myself was really surprised to hear about. In my pre teens, that's when I got really serious about playing lead guitar and like I said, besides Jimi Hendrix, I was totally into Prince, Dez and Jesse, as guitarists. Not just cats who performed in bands that I really liked. I studied the shit out of their playing, learned their solos, saw the big differences between them as players AND performers. Their dressing styles, just their whole image. They were brothers who were actually living, out their where I could go see them in the flesh. Big difference with Hendrix, who had LONG passed from this earth. Point is Jeri Curl, (I dig your name, by the way, being I have my own tales about wearing that very style), so much I was told, was somewhat surprising to hear, me being someone who had respected these cats as much as I did, growing up. I can't tell u on just HOW MUCH P, Dez and Jesse influenced me. So, I've been hip to be careful on what I speak on and what I shouldn't. Not only for their case but for fans of theirs. Like I said, I'm the next generation behind these cats so I know there are others on here that dug these cats when they were doing their thing. It's totally different me posting something as oppossed to if I was telling u face to face. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Jesse is one of those artists I've always meant to check out, mostly due to the threads and posts on this forum. I still don't have any of his albums, but I'm familiar with and like a few singles from the 80s. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

It's over...and that was 80-84, and 1995.
Prince probably attended The Grammy's to see The Original Time.. You got people agruing over juicy details about what happened while these brothers are all "cool again". People talked alot about Prince and Vanity, until Denise appeared on VH1 and said that Prince helped her during her illness... The music style was Prince.. So, what if he took some ideas on physical appearance? It was all "Electric 80's Hendrix" anyway. At the top of this thread, there is a pic of Jessie with his lips "poked-out/pouting/puckering" (with lipstick) like Prince [Edited 4/11/08 8:48am]

blackguitaristz said: Jezebel said: No, I don't see why, what are you talking about? It's a long ass story, actually. Others who have read my posts in the past know what I'm talking about. Long story very short...I did some guitar leads for a Morris solo album back in 95. During this period, Morris hipped me to a bunch of things that went down between P and Jesse. There was a serious personal rivalry. Morris and Andre (these sessions were recorded at his loft) both told me things, mainly cuz I'm a lead guitarist, like P and Jesse. One of the things where P had issues with Jesse was because Jesse, while with The Time, was very popular with the ladies. Jesse is short, not as short as P, but he's short. Jesse had the pretty boy image just like P did. Maybe even more so. But without the "gay" overtone that P was rocking. Believe it or not, during this time, many women who did like P's music, didn't like P, the man. His "am I gay or am I straight?" shit turned off a lot of girls. That wasn't the case with Jesse, so he cleaned up with the attention. P hated this shit cuz he wanted to be the only cat that was the lady killer. That plus Jesse was a monster on guitar. I can go into a lot of other shit but I don't want folks getting upset and shit. But there was a thing about how P started promoting the color purple. I posted about this on here a long time ago. Morris told me that when he first met Jesse, before The Time was even formed, him and Jesse were doing a duo Hall & Oates type of thing. Jesse had the pink guitars, custom made pink speakers, the pink suit, the whole 9. This was BEFORE P was even thinking about wearing purple or making his color theme purple.Jesse was doing this shit while P was still wearing his drawers on stage during his Dirty Mind tour. There's other stuff but anyway...that's what I was alluding to in the post that u responded to. WOW! Thanks for this little tidbit BG. and I know your info is authentic. I remember that Prince was more into wearing black and red (James Brown) and long raincoats, and yes bikini underwear. He really didn't start rocking Purple until 1999. By that time The Time was already either rehearsing for their tour or on tour. I am sure when Prince brought out the color purple, he had already met Jesse. Your take on that whole color thing really seems to add up. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack
