I think she is great and she has offered me useful and generous advice everytime I needed it.
It is a bit easy to say that she can't mix, I would love to see you guys up there spinning records lol

Uh nice try...I grew up around old school djs, my brother is a dj, and my good friend, a female, does my fundraising parties for my organization, so I may not be able to mix, but I know a good mix when I hear one. You're right, Djing ain't easy, some are good at it and some are not. All I'm saying is that she sucks bad, yet she's getting all these high profile jobs. Man, beauty.....

I'm curious o hear her work, myself. Does she have any mixtapes? What's the problem with how she DJs? Is it the songs she mixes? Is it the inability to make then congruent? Does she scratch too much? lol What? I'm just curious.

Well at least she looks damn good "not" doing it. Maybe she's reading this thread? Offer her some pointers.
I'm still amazed that there's a woman in the associated camp that hot that has garnered so little attention from the Prince fan camp. I guess if she actually touched him, it would become a different story.

If I were him, I'd use a pretty distraction like....Chelsea Rogers...to take the heat off and then kick it with Rashida on the down low and the "fams" would be none the wiser. nod

Thank you for your consession. Nice pic, too.
That still doesn't answer my question, though. Prince never dated her? I know she kinda looks like Rosario Dawson, who I think Prince may have had a lil' thing for (1999 Remixes) as well. Everybody knows he has a "type" and she fits it.

IN this pic, she also looks like Robin.

I just listened to some of her mixes on her website. She's not god awful. She's a good "vanity"/lounge DJ like most DJs are today. She plays what she thinks the crowd will like (aimless easy blends) and enjoys the celebrity of it. I'm sure the crowds she plays for aren't real "househeads". Not risky as far as I heard. She's not the "bangin" type of DJ that would make you feel like you had the best fuck of your life. Djs like that, you don't need drinks or drugs to party to....they know how to spin and get you high off the music (have you thinkin'about that mix for months).

It does take talent. Of course you can just spin your turntable and play some records, that doesn't take much skill.

But if you play at a club full of music lovers with knowledge who look up to you after every song, you have to be able to create a certain feel for the night, comfortably moving from one musical territory to the next, without loosing the crowd and getting them hyped up, without playing them out after a while. Do that for four to six hours, and we'll talk again. wink

Re-read your post. Gotcha. Poor transitions can kill a vibe in a spot. I get the feeling that the "butterscotch curlytop" factor weighed more in her favor with Prince than her skills. There are a lot of good DJs but there are fewer good LOOKING DJs that fit his "type". I guess I'll pop over to her site and check out what's posted. Is she in Minneapolis or somewhere else?

She's based outta LA and has done quite a few recent high profile gigs there. Don't get me wrong, I loved her music selection at 3121, good mix of old school r&b, funk, hip-hop, and Prince. But EVERY time you started getting into a groove she would literally jump to another song without mixing the new one in. Sometimes there was even dead air or a jumpy needle between songs. WTF??? That's not a good look in a club. It was so annoying. She definitely got that gig because of her looks. And just because it's not talked about much I'm sure P hit it, IMHO, cuz he's a pimp. LOL!

Rashida don't sound bad at all IMO, she gets in and out of songs with the quickness without trainwreckin'. I'd like to hear her do nothing but a Funk/R&B mix playing nothing but cuts from 75-85 just to hear what her song selection would be.

We aren't necessarily disagreeing here. I appreciate anyone that can play songs a wide range of people want to hear. But what skill does that take? All you have to do is play the Top 40 and you;re going to accomplish the mission.

Basically, all a successful DJ has to do is resist the impulse to play what he likes in favor of playing what the crowd likes.

There's a lot more to dj'ing than song selection. I've never dj'd but I've worked in lots of clubs and I KNOW when a DJ sucks. There is definitely an art to it. Yes, an art. Kid Capri is my favorite.

at the Miami show she didn't say anything. she just chewed her gum and played records. lol

then at the 3121 vegas i think she said, "yall know about that black sweat" and "are you ready?" when it was close to the show.

she doesn't say much.

I'm not talking about Top 40 DJing. You're right, anyone can do that. You gotta look at special genres to find good DJs. I DJ Funk and Soul and make my living of it. I rarely play songs that are known to those on the dancefloor. But when I still get people moving, and they are feeling the music, and I take their hand and guide them through the history of Funk and Soul music without loosing their attention, then I'm happy. And the night is perfect if people don't even ask for songs - then I know that they were really into it and didn't have the need to ask for songs they know. I promise you, if I play your party, I'm gonna burn the house down. biggrin (Now enough with this shameless self-promotion).

But in order to do that, you need to know your music. It takes years of diggin' and a good feeling of selecting the right tunes to make a successful night. You gotta know how to mix up what you got. And yes, that takes talent, if you want to be successful enough to make a living of it.
