Why are Wendy and Lisa so much better than Prince? I have just been listening to Wendy and Lisa's great albums "Eroica" and "Girl Bros" and was struck by how much better they are than Prince's recent output.
Wendy and Lisa really seem to have been responsible for a great deal of the cool little touches in Prince's music when they were in the band. He was not the same after they left... it is not that he started to suck when they left, but there were a lot of melodic ideas and things that changed. I believe that they wrote or contributed a TON of things that were never credited to them. Wendy and Lisa can't seem to get a break and don't sell many records, but their music is very heartfelt, creative and interesting. Damn it... where are you SkeletonKee??? I need some backup on this one. BTW: Skeleton Key is the funkiest song on "Eroica" in my opinion. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

I agree with you. I put on "Mother of Pearl" yesterday...(hadn't played Eroica in awhile)...made my day!
The girls are VERY under-rated. I think they brought a whole different element to Prince's music...that has been missing for a long time. They need a little more respect than just "Oh, those two girls from Prince's band" The Prince.org Photo Album http://www.purplehouse.nl...ery/Jacqui

I agree with the style Wendy & Lisa added to Prince's music. There was far more creativity when he was open to the ideas of others - before he seemed to have decided that Prince is the man to control it all.
I not only miss their "sound" - but even more, I miss the heavenly quality of what the lyrics used to say. Unfortunate for many of Prince's ex-bandmembers - they seem to be judged as "has-beens" when, imho...they seem to be innovator's...much like Prince used to be - before he decided to become a part of the history of Funk...don't get me wrong...I LOVE THE FUNK!!! I just miss the originality and creativity he once displayed - as Wendy and Lisa continue to do. Perhaps those who enjoy them should start to put some money into them - so we get more of their music! Not better, different. Wendy and Lisa have allowed themselves to work with so many other musicians that influence, both theirs on them and them on theirs, allows for a continuing development in their attitude and style. Prince creates works of fine comparison whilst locking himself away in his Paisley Bunker. One of the greatest influences Wendy and Lisa had on Prince was introducing him to various types of music...they also had the balls, excuse the whatsit, to stand up to him and tell him when things were going wrong. There is no doubt in my mind that Prince could only benefit from asking Wendy and Lisa to hook back up with him and play together once more.

I'm not sure where i stand on W&L being better than Prince, but i do know they should have been given more credit on SOTT, argubly Prince's best album.
Especially on songs like 'Dorothy Parker', 'If i was your girlfriend', and 'Starfish and Coffee'--the songs that really complete the album...that voice of tenderness and introspect have rarely been been seen since their departure. They know more about than i, but i have a feeling that's why they're still so pissed about the break up. Prince made it sound like he couldn't move on with the Revolution, but most-if not all- of the SOTT songs were written and performed before their departure. --IMO, he should have kept W&L, and let Bobby Z and Brownmark go. I liked Mr Hayes, i like Renato, but Dr Fink was the bomb(whom he kept 'til 1990, of course). But, as the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20.

Wendy and Lisa's greatest talent is to be able to help whoever they're working with realize their vision. I think all 3 of them deserve equal credit for the Revolution music. Plain and simple, NO ONE has ever had better chemistry with Prince than them. And I love all of their albums but Eroica and Girl Bros totally represent what's missing from Prince's music (save for TRC) COLOR!!! I'll never forget the rainbows that floated out of my speakers the first time I heard Christopher Tracy's Parade.

why do *i* appreciate wendy and lisa's music more so then princes? because they make it a point *not* to duplicate songs...
a lot of prince's songs, sound too similiar in style and execution.. like everlasting says, its all about the colors...wendy and lisa have such a huge arsonal to work with...and a lot of it is subtle...for the past decade, prince's music lacked any type of subtletly..it was as if he was chasing the next big blockbuster release...at the expense of quality... TRC is a step in the right direction..but even that album starts to loose steam towards the end... wendy and lisa may not technically be the best performers...they may not be able to dance and sing...and they act like actual humans...but, the emotion they are able to convey with a piano and a guitar are unmatched...no overdubs...no layers upon layers of backing vocals...no protools...just them and their instruments...and oye!! the harmonies... to think that the bulk of Girlbros was recorded in their home..with Tchad engineering and re-mixing afterwards...perfection!!!

cosign. I'd just like to Reiterate what Everlasting said about all three of them getting equal credit for the music of the Revolution. Take "Splash" for example. Prince and Wendy and Lisa's voices blended so beautifully. ***************************************************

Basically because alot of the Prince PT Lover-Haters and Jealous Obsessives, who have certain traits in common with Wendy & Lisa, want them to be...
These are same folks who are waiting for ONA Live Tracks, but say Bruce Springsteen is better live... It's only Bitterness ... Prince was a "Ghost Writer" on most of their earlier work and I hear his influence. I also am not such an "Irrational Hater" of Wendy & Lisa to realize that Lisa has influenced Prince's piano playing and classical music interests. Now with that being said, most "W & L are better than Prince" Folks usually are these people: a) Spoiled Caucasian fans who are bitter at P for his new stance on race (what really has changed?), Religion, and Politics. b) Caucasian fans who actually like the inclusion of a more white/pop/rock influence in P's sound (which is reasonable). c) Spoiled Caucasian and other fans who want Prince to shut-up because he is an artist of African American Heritage suing over the boots they want to make money from. He really doesn't care about the Unreleased and Pre-95(WB) stuff anymore, but no...These leeches want to suck-off of his own Live Release (that most asked for).. These people have the audacity to claim that Prince is Spoiled when they just aren't selling to a few of their fellow fams. They are making an entire industry off of boots of the same current releases of Prince that they abhore(hate).. Boot Wendy and Lisa! Some true honesty could be golden. What did your parents tell you? An African American cannot dismiss two artists who want to leave his group? To allow these artists to take his influence on them and capitalize off of Craze that was The "Minneapolis Sound"? He did them a favor(at the time). He was "The Boss!" Can he be "The Boss?" Uh..No..The Boss is Bruce Springsteen. Oh, Bruce dropped The E Street Band for nearly 17 years! Hypocrites...Some things will never change.. Where were you when Wendy & Lisa actually had a "real" record deal? You let their CDs go "Double Lead" while Prince was still scoring Platinum?!! d) Spoiled Idiots of any Ethnicity who are living their Sexual Lives vicariously through Prince...They really don't love "His Artistic Quality". These people seem really superficial and self-centered. e) Spoiled Dolts of any Race who want to re-invent Purple Rain..over...and... over... They want to believe that Puppet Scene in Purple Rain between Wendy & Lisa... While attending High School, a Caucasian student told me that, "Prince wasn't doing anything worthwhile after W&L left". She forgot to mention Dr.Fink, (Morris Day, Prince's Father, Eric Leeds, Brownmark, Andre Cymone, Dez, who I felt as a much of a hand in Prince's development...) Then I asked her "How many of Wendy & Lisa CD's do you own?" You don't need to guess her answer ... You might not like what I have to say, but it's more truthful than your false declarations of love for "Wendy & Lisa". Please don't use them (and their time with Prince) to serve your wicket hypocritial opinions of Prince's music. You don't love Wendy & Lisa. You love jealousy, and hate. They were a "great cog" in The Machine that was Prince and The Revolution (Get over it). If they did'nt enjoy their time with Prince, they should have left earlier (No Grammies, exposure, or movie). Gayle Chapman did. [This message was edited Thu Nov 28 11:12:48 PST 2002 by NGSPW7200]

Iceman, I dig ya, but Wendy and Lisa are glorified studio musicians that don't have the vision to sustain a recording career of any sort of longevity. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Hmmm...What exactly did The Wolf say to The Sheep while in disguise? "Psst...I'm going to eat you. Understand?" "In fact, your statements make absolutely no sense at all." Yeah they do.. My statements make enough sense to start the flames a-coming... I told the truth..at least. The W&L comments make no sense because he sold CDs well after they were gone.(Correct?) And we all know that Commercial Sales mean everything. (Right?) Why can't we love 'em both? Or, enjoy the different aspects of their music... No, they have to be better (even though their website hasn't been updated in several months).. It's just like the fools who say that D'Angelo, or Beck is better despite the fact that they are on pace to sell less than Prince ever...They'll never catch him. I guess, for that arguement, Prince record sales won't matter..will they? Artistic Merit will count more then. People twist the facts and um...the truth, to serve and justify their own needs and agendas..good and awful. (Remember: We cannot:a) see,b) or know who is actually posting here, or their true purposes for doing so.) Whatever...Wake me when the first Wendy and Lisa boot website and message board begin..(They get more real love in Australia..When will they tour here, alone?) zzz [This message was edited Fri Oct 11 16:43:55 PDT 2002 by NGSPW7200]

I do love both of them... but I think that Wendy and Lisa have been producing better music than Prince. This has nothing to do with sales and has everything to do with my PREFERRING their music to Prince's music. This was not the case in the eighties or early nineties... but it is the case now.
So... Sales have absolutely nothing to do with good music, nor does being bootlegged. I seriously think that being ex-Prince associates hurts Wendy and Lisa in the public's opinion. So, can you please explain why you think that nobody could possibly like Wendy and Lisa better than Prince? You are very confusing and your argument doesn't make any sense to me at all. This is semi crazy...Prince utilized W&L prominantly after the album 1999...made Wendy a star so to speak...his music changed drastically because of this influence, collaborations etc..however it isnt as if he never had any musical ideas, couldnt play piano on his own etc without W&L...Wendy got a big head plain and simple ...threatend to leave etc after Prince began to utilize Wally, Brooke, and Jerome as part of the show, seemingly putting the music second. Nerve if you ask me. Sure they may have contributed greatly but damn...dont start trippin. She didnt say shit when she was a main attracton in Purple Rain while Brownmark was relegated to a rare scwene here and there etc. SOTT was released without their contributions for the most part. Dream Factory in its original configuration would have been cool too-- Like the controversy goes...some ay Prince lost his fire when he hired Wendy..that his funk wasnt the same (it wasnt)..and some say he went to higher levels (Prince says this himself in Old Friends on sale for bargain price). Their influence cant be denied, but I think their main importance was the atmosphere they created with Prince. Giving him this family, closeness and togetherness that he didnt have previously (seemingly). But people shoudnt trip and make Prince th e be all to end all bad guy--W&L are both strong willed and Im sure were not angels in the whole scenario. Be objective. "Climb in my fur."
