Mavis' latest... sales?

Hello chaps-

Last week, I went to Amazon's music frontpage- I was not logged in, so I don't think they could've been tailoring their data for my tastes etc... I was just checking where PE was in their chart.

Anyway, what struck me was that Mavis' most recent album was listed among their TOP FIVE sellers in music! WHY SO? How come? It's slipped considerably since then- just wondered whether she did some big stateside chatshow or something.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that her album made the Billboard 200 for a couple of weeks. Can some kind sage amongst ye provide numbers/background???

It deserves something. SHE deserves something...

I'm gonna take a guess that you're referring to the latest Mavis Staples album...

...We'll Never Turn Back

Since I don't make music purchases based on charts and numbers I can't help you there.
But I will say that this disc would be a good purchase for at least 2 reasons.

1) Mavis Staples is a legendary professional whose voice is a treasure.
2) As opposed to the majority of mindless foolishness out there, this is an album that's actually about something.

We'll Never Turn Back, focuses on another kind of hope: the hope that the men and women who engaged in the civil rights struggles of the early '60s brought to a hostile America and changed its laws -- and some of its attitudes, but not nearly enough -- forever. Staples has enlisted the help of the original vocalists of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Community, who were called the SNCC Freedom Singers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (no strangers to the struggle for basic human rights) in a couple of places, and Ry Cooder and his roots band to accompany them.

It's simply because this album is DIVINE! Ry Cooder did an amazing job with this record.

Very much enjoying this.

reminds me a bit of Solomon Burke's return..."Don't give up on me"

magic, genuine soul.
