Jesse Johnson trying to look like Prince?

My brother was telling me the other day that he does not like Jesse Johnson because he tries to be like Prince(which by the way is my brother's favorite idol). He goes on saying why can't Jesse be himself,if he didn'it like Prince back in 80's why try and sound like him, etc.I'm a huge Jesse Johnson fan and i respect my brother's opinon, but i told him maybe because Jesse didn't have a choice to do his own music when he went solo and A&M records probably wanted him to do the "Minneapolis Sound" instead of him doing hard rock or blues rock. What does everbody else here think that my brother is right about Jesse Johnson tring to be like him?

I never thought Jesse was trying to "look" or be like Prince. He was with the Time so when he went solo he did what he had to do which was go with the sound that made him money. Jesse was always a good songwriter and a bad ass guitar player. There were plenty other brothers at the time who were trying to act like Prince and they just sucked ass. Jesse really won my respect when he came out with "Bare My Naked Soul", but I liked his other music too. I was so happy to hear him do some rock and some blues, but all the other genres he touched on with that album.

I can't wait for Jesse's next album.

I agree with you.I never thought Jesse wanted to be like Prince neither. It's just that my brother thinks since he read about Jesse and Prince and how they did not get along back in the 80's,he would presume why would Jesse wanted to be like him anyway. By the way, I can't wait for Jesse's new album to come out too.

purplewaves, maybe u should let your bro check out this info; When I did some lead guitar work for Morris back in 95, he and Andre (who's home studio we were using for the sessions) told me alot about how things really were back then. One of them being that Prince actually took quite a bit from Jesse, visually. Morris knew Jesse before The Time even existed. Morris and Jesse were doing a duo thing ala Hall & Oates. When P started doing The Time, which was really Andre's idea, then that's when Morris brought Jesse along. Morris said that at that time, late 80, P's image was NOTHING like Jesse's. Jesse, on the other hand, had ALWAYLS looked and ACTED that way. Ever since Morris had first met Jesse, Jesse already had that image. He already was wearing that hair style, had the stage persona, etc. Morris said that P was stuck on the "punk" thing ala Dirty Mind untill he saw Jesse in rehearsals with The Time. It was THEN, about half through the Controversy tour, that P started incorporating Jesse's image.

Morris said that Jesse already was into the color pink. That Jesse's stacks of amps and speakers he had when he first met him, were pink. Morris said that it was no doubt that Jesse gave P the idea to start using his own color. Which of course, was purple. Morris said that everybody in P's camp, P's band, The Time, Vanity6, the roadcrew, managers, everybody, knew that P lifted shit from Jesse. Morris said that Terrry would tell Jesse all the time how fucked up he thought it was. That now people, since P was the star, would assume that Jesse was taking from P, when in reality, it was the other way around. Morris said that because of this and plus P being somewhat threatned by Jesse's guitar playing, is why there was so much tension between P and Jesse.

Well to be fair to purple's bro, it's natural for folks to think that. They don't know. It's no accident that Jesse was the one to do the best out of all of P's proteges.

What is this? Why do people always do that "He's trying to _____ like _____"? I hear that about the frickin' American Idols trying to look like Justin Timberlake. Jesse looks like Prince. Justin is trying to be like Michael Jackson. etc etc. It's a lame argument people make. If they don't like someone, so what. Move on.

Frankly everyone back then looked like Prince. That whole hair swooped to one side thing, shiny clothing, lace, etc.....everyone was doing it. Doesn't mean everyone was trying to look like Prince. Ready For The World was like The Time Part II in their dress and style and music sometimes. Influence is one thing, but for folks to argue that old "he's trying to" thing.....they don't know that! They don't; he's not in Jesse's head. Jesse had a sound, so did Dez, Andre, Brownmark, whoever. Is it similar? SURE! You're influenced by people you listen to or are around, and Jesse was a great r&b/funk/rock artist. He's a great guitar player. So is Prince. So is Clapton. Is Clapton trying to be like Prince because he plays guitar too?

Tell your brother to quit being weird about it.

From the sound of some of you folks, there is not one thing Prince has done in his career that was his idea. EVERYTHING was stolen from someone else who would have been a major star had Prince not "fucked them over".

Maybe I'm reading too deep into this, but it seems anytime there is a thread regarding the Time it's about how much Prince destroyed them, how much better they were than him.

I think I said it before, but has anyone forgotten that Prince gave them the FUNKIEST MATERIAL he ever recorded?

Now Morris, Andre, whoever can say whatever they want, and for some reason it is taken as gospel. Maybe one day we'll here Prince's side of the story. Until then, I look at it as Prince gave the Time their big break and when they started "turning him out" in front of crowds that had a majority of people who PREFERRED FUNK to the genre bending stuff Prince was trying at the time, things went wrong.

Now Prince probably was an asshole to the boys--there's enough evidence to point in that direction--but why? Was it the drugs that Morris was shoving up his nose? Was it the fact that the Time maybe started believing their own hype? Was it the fact that he was afraid they were better than him? Who knows, but I for one refuse to take the word of Andre Cymone and Morris Day as gospel.

I agree with you 100%, it's as if Prince didn't have any original ideas of his own.
