I mean come on, Rick James tried to be like Prince too around the Wonderful album (which is also a great album), and Jesse did the same thing.

Also, I think it's well known that Prince wrote the Time's material, and especially The Bird (he even said he wishes he'd kept it for himself). It's also well documented in Jesse's own words that "Prince and the others would always laugh at me when I came in with a groove, saying it wasn't funky. They would always laugh, but they stopped laughing when I came in with the groove for Jungle Love". This was in an interview I read a few years back.

And another thing: does ANYTHING on this site matter in the grand scheme of things? Does Prince lose sleep over whether people prefer Pink Cashmere or Adore? If you are looking for the answer to life I suggest you look elsewhere, but if you want to participate in discussions about/around Prince's music hang around. Or maybe you should just start a jessejohnson.org

Jesse absolutely wrote "Jungle Love" and "The Bird". I still remember Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on BET back around '86 or '87 talking about how Jesse did all the instruments for "Jungle Love" and how he took it from 8 track to 16 track to 24 track recording. And I remember Jesse saying he wrote both those songs and sort of wished he had saved them for his 1st solo album.

and what about the 777 93 11 guitar-solo? is it Jesse or Prince?

The real point his like or not P is still out on the music scence. Jesse is not. He really needs to be more productive if he wants the world to know how good he is.

(sigh) I know for a stone fact that Jesse wrote Jungle Love. Words and music. Morris , who would know, told me this and a bunch of other shit. But concerning this, yeah, it was Jesse. I've stated a few times on here already about how P came in AFTER Jesse had left the studio and erased some of Jesse's guitar solo to this song. jesse played everything on the track with the exception of the "horn" keyboard part, which was added by P. Oh and it's P playing the solo to 777-9311. And even on that, he's imitating Jesse. That's why it has a mild wah/octavia sound to it, cuz that's the sound Jesse used a lot for his leads on the first Time tour. And also the whammy bar, which P never used during this period, but Jesse did. P's choice of sound and style on that solo was to irk Jesse that even though P was biting off of Jesse's sound, HE was the one who still recorded the solo.

I think I knew Jesse wrote Jungle Love.....he did it in concert too .

But (now I'm a keyboard player so i may be biased).... but the "horn part" is pretty much the basis of the song, along with the bass (which might be a synth bass).

I got my band to play it....and it's really all the bass line, plus 2 layered synth horn parts, until the break where Jesse does chicken scratch rhythm.

(yes there are some rythm guitar hits on the verses but they are buried).


To me the whole song is the horns doing the hits on the chorus and the other synth holding the whole notes throughout, plus the signature riff at the end of of every 4 bars (mainly bass and synth).

It is highly probable (I have no evidence or inside information through conversations with any ex member of The Time etc) that Jesse Johnson wrote "Jungle Love", he was obviously proud of that song because he named his own studio Jungle Love Studios!
