I forgot which book I read this in, but if I recall the track to "Belle of St. Mark" belonged to Jesse, and Prince wrote the lyrics. In return Prince gave Jesse writing credit for Shorberry Strawcake.

I"ll have to look this up in the vault when i get home.

but i never understood this.....why NOT give credit on song A, and then GIVE credit on song B which the person didn't write??

It would be easier to just give credit where credit is due.

Well.... not the percussion smile.... which is a key part of the song.

Speaking of which, imagine if Glamorous Life had been done by Apollonia 6 as originally planned. It wouldn't have had all the timbale, cymbal and percussion work that Sheila rocks out on. SOme of it's subtle too. if you listen on headphoens you can really hear tons of stuff going on.

Back to Shortberry Strawcake. i'm pretty sure Jesse is either co-writer or plays guitar.

Taken from the book DMSR by Per Nilsen

According to Susan Rogers, "Prince asked Jesse if it would be ok that he gave Jesse writing credit on one of Sheila's songs. Jesse said, 'ok i guess so. What's the name of the song?' Prince said, 'Shortberry Strawcake.' We didn't think anymore about it until the record came out and Jesse heard 'The Belle of St. Mark', which was based on the rhythm track of a song written by Jesse. HE played me the cassette of his song, and he had played it for Prince a long time ago, and Prince remembered the song and wrote a new song based on it for Sheila. Jesse was very offened! Prince would sometimes take a credit away from someone in a legitimate area and apply it in an illegitimate area".

Apart from Sheila's percussion parts, Prince played everything on the album. Lisa's brother David played cello on Oliver's House and The Glamorous Life, and Jill Jones added vocals to The Belle of St. Mark and Oliver's House. Other musicians added violin and accordion. Prince also brought in saxophone session musician Larry Williams. All else was played by Prince.

It's quite obvious why Prince would do this...$$$$

The Belle Of St Mark was obviously going to be a single and therefore get plenty of radio airplay and therefore a chunk of royalty payments for the writers of the song.

Shortberry Strawcake was an album track so was very unlikely to get radio airplay and therefore less $$$
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I agree with you on why he did this. As far as Jesse is concerned, I can see why he was very pissed. This move was very unfair.

Well I don't think it worked. Belle of St Mark didn't really get much airplay.... smile

Moreover, why did everyone put up with this? I mean letting someone play with the credits..... it's illegal!
