Mazarati vs. the Family

This is an easier topic to debate. Both had 1 Paisley Park release. Both did at least 1 show as group that most know of. I'm split right now. Cause I know Brownmark did some fonky basslines on the Mazarati lp and the Family material was some of P's best work.

I'm split....

Mazarati by far. For the same reason I chose The Time over The Family.....they didn't have that classical shit on the album.

Mazarati lol

Their album is pure funk, and a few tracks have a rock edge to them.I think their album is more focused than the Family's album, which is more "artsy" and experimental.

You can say that again. You left "fartsy" off the "artsy". lol

Again, 2 distinctively different bands: One was like Rock&B (Maz) and the other was Jazz&B. It all depended on what mood you were in. Overall though, I'd take The Family because it had more variety.

lol I'm all for music that is challenging, bold and "out there",However,I think the Family's album lacks direction. There are two pointless instrumentals and not enough hardcore funk. That's why I like Mazarati's album more. They're not playing no games.....they're going straight to the FUNK! No orchestra,no violins,no artsy, experimental stuff.

The Family !

This one + the one from Jill Jones + Sheila E. selftitled will always be my favourite 3 associates albums.

The Family album is almost pure Prince with all but one track written by Prince. I guess most of the tracks were also performed by him. That doesn't mean the Mazarati album is bad but - as mentioned - two distinctively different bands

Speaking about The Family, Mazarati and Sheila E. ...

as far as I remember, there is at least a rumour about a planned combined tour of those 3 acts back in the days which of course never materialized.

One of my favourite lines (sometimes discussed here) is that "Jerome, upside your head, Mazarati upside your head" chant during Sheila E.'s (Prince written) "Love On A Blue Train" which indicates such plans.

That's correct. The three acts were supposed to go on a big tour in 1986.Sheila would have been the headliner. It was planned as a "Paisley Park Revue"-type tour that would showcase the three hottest acts on Prince's label. The tour was cancelled when St.Paul Peterson abruptly quit the Family, which of course, ended the group.

Yes, Violet Blue is one of my all-time favourite associates tracks. I absolutely dig it and need just the first 5 seconds to get on it. The great intro gets me every time. I cannot describe it but I skip back and back and back just to keep listening to it.
