Never heard of her before. Seems like she just popped up out of nowhere. Kind of like Tamar did at the BET awards.

Is she the latest protege? And does she always wear that same Storm-from the X-men type outfit (the fabric attached to her wrists)? She wore something similar at the press conference.

I don't know who she is or where she came from, but she probably won't be around for long

Well Prince IS overdue for giving 15 minutes of fame to and then annihalating the career of some poor, young female singer/protoge, dancer, etc.

I know, that's not entirely true, but it does seem like that sometimes. Hopefully, she's savvy enough to survive on her own.

I don't think she's a "protege". She has her own band (The Black Gypsy Project) and is set to release her own independently distributed album soon. If you read any of the threads about Prince's 3121 performances she's been guesting there during Prince's sets since they met in mid-Deccember when she was singing in Larry Graham's band. She was also a backing singer for D'Angelo during his "Voodoo" tour. You can find out more and hear some of her band's music at her MySpace page.

I saw Shelby with Prince in Vegas weekend of 1/19 & 20th, and we thought she was great. Very old school sound, very strong voice.
She's doing a killer cover of "Crazy" amongst other things. She did one song (Love Changes- ?) during the main set and another (Crazy) during the encores, plus sang both nights during the aftershow.
The Superbowl appearance did NOT show what she can do- I think her vocals may have been intentionally set lower than his- or-, she's just never sang lead in a stadium before, and I'm sure not in the pouring rain no less. But obviously Prince has a lot of confidence in her to have her there.
I remember her being dressed quite normal in Vegas- nothing attention calling. That outift last night did nothing for her, it made her look heavier than she is and was generally distracting. She looked out of place to me during the press conference. Not like that at all in Vegas. All that being said, of course I only saw her do a few songs over 2 nights. But she did go over very well from my perspective, and people seemed to really like her.

yeah, the outfit was comical and outlandish. i'm ROFL at how people are describing it/her. but her VOICE is stong. probably the best since Rosie.
she accentuated Prince's vocal nicely during the SB show; esp. when he was away from the mic, playing and what not

is the cover she's doing of Crazy, Gnarl's or Seal's?

Well you should check out Mother's Finest vesion, if you can find it. It is hot even after almost thirty years. Joyce Kennedy very powerful singer.

i saw her at the New Year's weekend aftershows -- wow! great voice and presence.
