Mazarati

I noticed them mentioned in the Family/Time thread. There's some great songs on their first album, esp. Strawberry Lover, Player's Ball and 100 MPH. I think that album ( I have it on vinyl) was a very strong "associated" artist release. What are those guys up to these days- does anyone know?

Mazarati's album is one of my favorite albums.I think it rivals many of the other Paisley Park releases from that period. It's much stronger than The Time's 'Ice Cream Castles' and it's much funkier than the Family.Tracks like "Stroke","She's Just That Kinda Lady" and "100 MPH" are top-notch.The slow jam "I Guess It's All Over" is excellent, and so is "Lonely Girl On Bourbon Street".The lyrics are brilliant.I was really pissed when this album didn't become the big hit it deserved to be.In my area, though, our R&B stations had much love for this album.Even "Stroke" received alot of airplay.

Who were the members of the band and what has happened to them? I remember the music but I've never scene any interview with any of the members. This would've been a huge release if they would of done some promotion.

All that i know is that Brown Mark from the Revolution started the band, he went to high school with some of the guys, Prince had originally gave them the song"Kiss" but after he heard what the guys did with the song in the studio he
took the song back for himself, they was gonna do " Jerk Out" on their next album but that project never got off the ground and"Jerk Out" ended up on The
Times 1990 Album Pandemonium.

Actually, it was really David Z (and maybe BrownMark) who turned Kiss into what it sounds like today in terms of the production (there's been many posts on here about it). David programmed the Linn, created the delayed high hat and guitar riffs, and then arranged the BG vocals which the guys sang.

I'm not sure if Prince or David added the chicken grease rhythm guitar that comes in during the last verse and the wah-wah guitar over the dance break ("Think I wanna dance!").

Their 2nd album exists among boot collectors.... I never heard it myself but from what I"ve read it has no Prince connection.

I think Bernadette (Slap me one time!) Cooper of Klymaxx wrote/produced some tracks on the 2nd album.

Brown Mark produced half of the second album, which received a very limited release in Canada. I used to have a vinyl copy of it.

I like Mazarati, it was a cool group and debut album. '100 Mph', 'Player's Ball', 'Stroke', the slow jam 'I Guess It's All Over' is excellent, and 'Strawberry Lover' is great to hear. 'Strawberry Lover', I can hear The Neptune's produced N.E.R.D.S covering that joint. At least Pharrell singing lines from that song on something. It would have been interesting if both 'Kiss' and 'Jerk Out' was release on their debut. Both outtakes are raw and great to hear. It was said that Jerk Out didn't make it on the debut due to the controversy lyrics of the third verse. As far as 'Kiss', Prince was in one room of Sunset Studio working on material the would appear on the 'Parade' album with The Revolution and David Z. along with Brownmark was across the room from Prince, was working on material for Mazarati's debut. Prince sent David Z. and Brownmark a short demo version of 'Kiss' recorded from a Boom Box with Prince playing guitar. Originally Brownmark didn't like the song and didn't think it would work for the group, Mazarati. Prince told him to make it work. Then, David Z. along with Brownmark turns the song into a funky hit. David Z. and Brownmark produced Mazarati's version of 'Kiss'. Brownmark plays bass on the Mazarati's version that was arrainged by David Z. Prince heard it and told them that he wanted to work on the song too. Prince liked the song so much, he then produced his own verison of 'Kiss' based on Mazarati's version. This is when Prince reclaims the song because of he thought that they still didn't like the song anyway. That's pretty much how 'Kiss' came about.
