The DJs in my area had a major field day when the "Parade" album came out. Everyone was already pissed with "Around The World In A Day" album the year before and "Kiss" was a VERY misleading lead single. The DJs would play small clips of old jams like "Let's Work", "D.M.S.R.", "Sexy Dancer", "When Doves Cry"....then they would play clips of "Do U Lie" and "Venus De Milo". Afterwards, they would say....."What the HELL happened to Prince! He has absolutely lost his damn mind!". Then they would let people call in and respond to the new album. People were laughing their asses off.

I remember the DJ in the skating rink used to tell the crowd....."Y'all better make some noise up in here or I'm going to play one of those new Prince songs!" lol Prince had come from being well-loved to becoming a major joke.

If I remember correctly Prince first became familiar with Clare Fischer because of his work with Rufus and Chaka Khan. There are some great tracks Clare and Rufus worked on together. Destiny, Magic In His Eyes, Little Boy Blue, are my personal favorites.

Clare's input was very important to Prince's music. I mean the way the guitar and strings intertwine at the end of "Pink Cashmere" is amazing.

True about P not being a focal point in his life, but the lush dimension Claire has contibuted to P's music is just immense.
As someone said , imagine the tunes if they were stripped of the strings.....it would be alot of emptiness.
He is to Prince what George Martin was (to a large degree) to the Beatles.
How Claire finds and fills the holes with sooooo much texture and beauty is undeniably GREAT!

except for the fact the George Martin helped record and engineer almost all the Beatle songs as well as helping with instrumentation and the odd instrument performance/arrangement on their major hits. Clare Fischer is not on very many of Prince's most beloved songs.
True. P has sooooo much output taht he can go from an acoustic set(Truth) to an all out sensorary blitz, that's usually when Claire is called upon!

Housequake, SOTT,When Doves Cry, 1999, Black Sweat, 3121, When You Were Mine, Purple Rain, Pop Life, Kiss, Girls and Boys, Thieves in the Temple, Cream, Gett Off, ... etc.

True, truebut...if you stip down those Beatle classics you still have wonderfully blissful tunes that are still murder!
P can sit with a harmonica by itself and blow minds open
As Sir Paul once said" That Prince fellow seems like he's almost from another planet ,as deep and gifted as he is" THAT is on hell of a comment !

Yes, but the fact that there was classical music on there period was enough to become a joke. Just look at the tracks on "Dirty Mind", when Prince really took off on R&B radio, through "Purple Rain". Prince had been the hardest thing on R&B radio and with "Parade", they were hearing classical sounding songs that people usually associated "nerds" as listening to. It was a turnoff.

Those people are probably the same type of dumb-ass people who think Jimi Hendrix is corny or for white people, and they would also never listen to jazz, either!

I do like his contributions to Prince's work nod. Having said that I must confess that I have seen him live in concert once and after about 20 minutes or so I left as it was very boring to me.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Actually, I don't think they had ever heard of Jimi Hendrix. I, myself, had never heard of Jimi Hendrix until critics started comparing Prince to him in the early 1980s and then I went and checked out some of his stuff. I was listening to what was new and hot and mainly funk. I'm sure that's what they were listening to also.

As for folks never listening to jazz, I can listen to it now and even may seek out some of it. I don't blame people for not being into jazz though. There's really no reason to branch out into something else as long as good new music is being made. I didn't start branching out into other types of music until funk had died and mainstream R&B had turned to bullshit.

Also, why would you expect people to accept Prince making jazz or classical during that time? Prince, at that time, was a known as a funk/rock act. It's not like droves of funk or rock fans were into jazz anyway.

I put that wrong...Martin did alot more for the Beatles. But the arrangements were similiar to a degree.

And your point is?

I love the harmonic touches Clare Fischer lended to Prince's music.

I can tell you that my point is to refute "the importance of Clare Fischer to P's music" (the title of this thread) and create a discussion to keep this site functional.

Specifically to debate these posted points:

"He is to Prince what George Martin was (to a large degree) to the Beatles."
"Clare's contributions to Prince's work are huge"
"To that end Claire was never mentioned to keep the "mysique" of Prince intact! "
"He seems to be pretty much joined at the hip with P since the 1980's, but P rarely mentions this guy. "

Now, I like many of the songs that have these arrangements, but I do find his sound to be a bit b r o a d... which then borders on being interchangable from song to song. Which, funny enough, Prince does do...

Take out all of the strings in P's music from PR on and you have some very empy pockets all over the tunes where he contributed!
