Where are y'all getting Meshell from? What does she have to do with Prince? Seriously, I don't know.
And who is Cassandra? Kat Dyson on bass makes a lot more sense since she's been in both Sheila's and Prince bands before. The only thing wtih Sheila behind the drum kit is she's kinda hidden from view and won't get to sing much or play percussion. I"d rather see her up front on the timbale/conga/bongo set up like she was at the NAACP awards. As someone mentioned above, Jill on backups would rule! So, my fantasy all-female band looks something like: Wendy: Guitar Lisa: Keys Kat Dyson: Bass Sheila: Percussion/vocals/drums Jill, Susannah, and Lynn Mabry on background vocals. Not sure who goes on 2nd keys. Bonnie would be ideal but sadley she is no longer with us. I never liked Rosie that much and I don't know who Cassandra is. Oh and Candy could play sax as long as she tones it down and doesn't sing

Just got home from the 8:30 show...
Best damn Around The World in a Day / Mountains (and a little Love Bizarre) Jam I ever heard! For those of you who went to The Family Jam, you know Wendy does a GREAT job taking over as lead in place of you know who! After the show ended, my wife and I asked Wendy & Lisa if they'd be performing anytime soon, since we missed the last Largo show, which was reported to be a "Wendy & Lisa" Concert vs a Pacifico Show. Wendy stated "soon" and "in a larger venue so everyone can get in"... Awesome!... Can't wait! For those of you looking for more info about the show. It started at about 8:45pm and ended at 10:15pm. Each gal (Rhonda, Kat, Cassandra) got to sing a song (except Sheila ), plus they did a few improv jams in between. Wendy, Lisa and Lynn Mabry were "special guests", so not on stage the whole time. Sheila suprisedWendy and Lisa at one point and called them to the stage unexpectedly and put Wendy on Drums and Lisa on Keyboards while the had some fun with some Chicken Grease! The show concluded with everyone on stage singing Around The World in a Day / Mountains / A Love Bizarre. ***

Hey RT..... I just got back from Prince/tamar in NYC! Would've rather been to Sheila's show. '
Tell us more! Was Sheila on trap drums the whole time or did she play timbales or other instruments too? What other songs did they do? Was Susannah there?

it's hard to give a set list. I was at the 10:30 make that the 11:15 show and the women opened with Chicken grease...jumped into some jazz riffs with Kat taking us back to old school with a rendition of the "Flintstones" on guitar. Every lady sang a song as well as Lynn juming on stage. I must say, there's something about a woman that can just lay the funk down while playing bass....Kudos to Rhonda. the first time Wendy & Lisa jumped on stage, Sheila strapped on a guitar sans the plug at first....I'm not gonna say that the guitart tech was outside having a smoke 'cuz he already saw the show but .....Wendy did a good job keeping her seat warm. Hmmm Wendy on drums? At first I thought Sheila was getting her back for heckling her...
S:"Dang, I thought the crowd would be more alive tonight?" W: "They're still in awe of yor drum playing" ...and yep, Sheila, I didn't know Wendy could bang the skins. In regards to the Prince-esque stuff... W&L returned to the stage near the end in their normal roles. here's what I remembered. Around the world in a day Mountains White (W&L 1st album) Spanish groove? (D'Angelo) OK it's not Prince-esque but it was played during the set Love Bizzare Glamorous Life (similar 2 the clip on Sheila E's site) ended it back on the Chicken Grease groove Hmm can someone tell me who Rochelle Barroque?(sp?). She's definitely got a voice and when she started with the skat I was rolling. Overall, I already knew these women had talent, but seeing them upclose like that... just chilling, jamming getting in a groove. Magnificent! I knew exactly how Cassandra O'Neil felt when she said "I grew up listening/watching Sheila and these girls on TV...and now I'm singing with them on stage. wow" and I'm not even playing with them. The only thing I have a bone 2 pick about is that these women are far from Divas, in the present connotation. No drama, just very talented women expressing themselves with music . I don't know what it is but women seem 2 be a lot less pretentious and caddy than men when is comes to playing together. I guess they're already beyond that male ego thing we are guilty of so often. Hmmm future shows in a bigger venues soon?... Do tell Wendy...we will be waitng ...Girl, U excite me so......ooh wee baby, I bet ur quite a lover.....

Wow! Thanks Dopamine!
So how was Wendy heckling Sheila?? I knew Wendy plays drums (and bass) from the liner notes on their albums. Did Sheila actually play the guitar? Did it ever get plugged in? On the old SNL clip of Love Bizarre from the 80's she puts on the guitar but you can't hear anything she's playing and it looks like shes staying in one chord (well the song is kinda in one chord). What did Lynn sing? A Parliment song? How about Kat and Rhonda? And who is Cassandra? Was she the woman playing keys for Prince at NAACP? And did they ever brake out the timbales for Sheila? And by "chicken grease" you mean they just played a funky riff based on the James Brown style rhythm guitar? (like during the song Kiss) Sorry for all the questions... it sounds like an awesome show! I was at the 10:30 show too. It opened with a cover of Let's Get It Started. The highlight of the entire show was the amazing version of Around the World in a Day. It truly blew away the album version and segued beautifully into Mountains. After Mountains, the band transitioned into a finale jam medley that incorporated bits of One Nation Under a Groove and Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)--with Lynn Mabry on vocals for the second time of the night; the first was when she came up and sang a cover of a song called Weird World.
Sheila didn't do A Love Bizarre or even The Glamorous Life, at least not in any way that counts. (For TGL, all she sang was "She wears a long fur coat of mink/even in the summertime" and then left it at that--and the music being played did not even closely match the tune.) Sheila's drum solo was absolutely breathtaking, and her playing during the final medley was incredible as well. Sadly, there were no timbales in sight during the whole night. (No horns either--the only time that was an issue was when keyboardist Cassandra O'Neal had to play the horn part during Mountains.) GaryMF, to answer your questions--no, it didn't look like Sheila's guitar ever got plugged in, and she started doing some, well, weird vocalizations instead. Chicken Grease just seemed to be the name for their improv jam, but I could be wrong about that. It was great to see Wendy and Lisa playing. Sheila announced that she wants to take the C.O.E.D. band on the road and play lots of small clubs, so that's something to look forward to. Oh, one last thing--it was mentioned by several people after the show that the band had never rehearsed together until yesterday. Obviously, they're all excellent musicians, so they can be expected to put on a great show, but still--rehearsing just a few hours beforehand is pretty amazing considering what a good concert it was. There's probably more, but the previous posters have covered a lot. I had an awesome time seeing the show.

Main Entry: heck·le Pronunciation: 'he-k&l Function: transitive verb Inflected Form(s): heck·led; heck·ling /-k(&-)li[ng]/ Etymology: Middle English hekelen to dress flax, scratch, from heckele hackle; akin to Old High German hAko hook -- more at HOOK : to harass and try to disconcert with questions, challenges, or gibes : BADGER Wrong choice of words. Heckling implies something bad was said. What Wendy was doing was an apologia for the crowd's response which was practically nil. She was in awe of Sheila, as we all were, but I think the late show crowd was a bit tired at first. Hmm can someone tell me who Rochelle Barroque?(sp?). O M G!!!!!
LAST NIGHT WAS FUCKING AMAZING. Every woman on that stage was on fire. The funk was phenomenal. Wendy on drums and Sheila on gee-tar??? Yeah, we knew, but we'd never SEEN it. On the same stage. Yow-zaa. Around the World in a Day -- I'm just loving the Wendy & Lisa arrangement of this song. MOUNTAINS!!!!! "Guitars and Drums on the 1 -- Sheila is the Drumma!!!!!" I've long worshipped the fruits of WendyLisaSheila, and last night I gained a new appreciation for Rhonda and Kat. It was the first time I'd seen them perform something other than Prince tunes, and oh my wow they tore that shit up. Cassandra O'Neal? Never heard of her before last night and she was electric. noituloveryxesevolasildnaydnew

Man it sounds like a great show! Interesting that Cassandra did the horn parts on Mountains. Did she also do it on Love Bizarre? Was LB more like the record or like the live versions which have extra horn lines after each line of vocals (e.g. the live romance 1600 show)? Note to Sheila & CO: Please, please, please take this show on the road!! New York will definitely give you a warm reception! . [Edited 2/3/06 12:40pm]

Hmm let's see what I remember or don't
Wendy didn't really heckle...she just screamed to Sheila that the reason we (the audience) were quiet was that we were still in awe after her solo at the end of the 1st song. Which was in fact true I saw the techie finally give her the plug but I didn't hear her playing... I couldn't see her handwork on the frets because I was behind a post by the bar when she picked up the guitar yep Lynn sang Thank You (faettimebemiceelf) Cassandra O'Neal has a background in gospel and does a lot of session work i.e. Babyface LeVert, etc. I don't like using the word "session" cause she can tickle the ivories better than most peeps considered "session" musicians I'm listening to the NAAACP awards right now...and Prince acknowledges someone that sounds like Mavis or Ellis Nope ...no timbales Doh ...yep the Jimmie Brown riff...I was listening 2 D'Angelo on the way over to the show last night. Dang, How could I 4get about the original... And yes Sheila only sang a verse or 2 from her songs butthe music was there for at least 2 stanza...that's why I added Love bizzare and Glamorous life.... Check out the drum solo on her site ...http://sheilae.com/about/eclips.shtml After seeing last night's show, I'm making a promise NOT to miss any more of Sheila or W & L's shows ESPECIALLY when they're in cozy places like Levee and Largo. Thanks for you all who gave in-depth reports. Am I hearing this right Sheila played the guitar? WUT??!!! Dang I wished I could hear how she play. I bet she plays very decent without getting so complex.
I bet it was a great show and Sheila has never failed of putting on a fanastic show. I love Sheila E and all, she's my idol but she needs to get out of Cali a bit more to do a mini-road tour across USA. It would be nice if the band makes a stop to Nap (Indianapolis). That's when I am hoping that I would finally meet her. She is an inspiration to me and thousand of people to by telling us one of the many ways to comfort inner pain is through art. I couldn't agree more.
