MickG said: Yeah, you all recall how well "Kip" did right?
Kip Blackshire wasn't released on NPG Records, was he? Assuming Prince will arrange for major-label promotion and distribution of Ta'Mar's project, that will be something else Kip didn't have. Also, in conjunction with that, being the opening act on Prince's possibly upcoming tour will raise her profile even higher.

Well, I'm excited if no other reason than there will be 3 members in his band from HOUSTON . I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

NAACP edit.. [Edited 12/16/05 17:11pm] Gee, I wish I had listened to that performace. For what you say, she sounds like someone I would like to listen to further. If she is going to be the opening act, it will be a good opportunity for me to check her out live. Maybe I will end up buying her CD.

Yes, I think those who were around in the 80s would agree that the protege projects were half the fun of being a Prince fan... SO MUCH material then to collect and appreciate. I really feel that most of the protege projects sucked ass, for lack of a better turn. I couldn't listen to any cd's by Appolonia, Vanity 6, Jill Jones, Carmen Electra, Rosie Gaines, Martika, the Gameboyz, et al (i"m sure I'm forgetting some) if you paid me. The Rosie solo album was a real shame too...she had a great voice, unlike the others, but the material didn't take advantage. It was just crap. Anything of quality, such as The Family, was few and far between, and keep in mind there were real musicians involved there. I have zero hope that this new Tamar cd will be anything but deadly dull, perhaps a decent single surrounded by an album's worth of filler, like most of those mentioned above.

First of all, for the purposes of this discussion, by proteges we're talking strictly about Starr Company/WB, Paisley Park and NPG Records releases, which would exclude Rosie Gaines (Motown), Martika (Columbia) and The Gameboyz (unless you're talking about the NPG's "Goldnigga" album). I also assume you were talking about Appolonia 6 and not the Warner Bros. Appolonia solo album. That having been said I disagree with you strongly on the Jill Jones and will admit that a number of releases, like T.C. Ellis, were indeed cringe-worthy. But I liked enough of them (especially the early ones Prince produced himself) to make it fun and worthwhile for me. You have your opinion and I have mine.

Ashley Davis was a 2004 NAACP Theatre Awards Nominee (not Image Awards) for her role in Black Olive, the Musical. http://www.beverlyhillsho...minees.htm

I wouldn't be so cynical. I find that he is less egotistical than he used to be. I think that the way he will treat talent now and the way he did then are two completely different things. Recall, that throughout the Musicology tour interviews he talked a lot about mentoring up-and-coming acts.. giving back. I think it'd be great if he really did that. I don't think he's into novelty acts, which a lot of the one of the 80s/90s are, except for Rosie. But still he was still living in the "it's all about me" world. Plus, with all that he has done, I can see how he might want to take this on as another challenge.. bringing out the best in others. Come here, babe.. yeah...

In addition to prepping his new studio album, "3121," for a spring release via a just-announced deal with Universal Music Group, Prince is lending a helping hand to an up-and-coming artist. Sources tell Billboard.com the artist has completed co-production and co-writing on the debut CD by Tamar, although it is unknown if a label is attached to the project. Tamar will appear in the latest incarnation of Prince's live band, New Power Generation, and has additionally been tapped to open all of the dates on his 2006 world tour as a solo act. -- Jonathan Cohen, N.Y Hope the lp is good.
