The guitar used in Jesse's song "I'm Just Wanting You" off his EVERY SHADE OF LOVE album...is that a special guitar or just sounds different due to how he's playing it? Cuz the shit sounds tight as fuck!

Good question. I have always loved this cut. It's one of my faves from Jessie. My thought has always been that he is definately using an effect on that guitar track. It's a very "wound up tight" sound, so obviously it's compressed. He could have achieved this either from a pedal, from his amp, from the mixing board or from all three working together. But, he definately fiddled around with the sound to get that. He also could have used a Hawaiin guitar, which this sound is similar to as well.

I always thought Jesse recorded the tracks at a slower speed than normal -- kind of a "Camille" effect on his guitar... Prince does this a lot, though usually distorted.

Although the notes aren't hitting super quick, the sound makes me think it might have been some kind of steel guitar maybe. If you listen closely, there are two guitar solos playing over each other. That may play with the sound too.

If I recall correctly....Jesse stated that the guitar tracks for that tune were recorded direct to the board.(no amp). Guitar World featured an article on Jesse where he talked a bit about his gear and the album "Every Shade Of Love".
I'd thought for years that he used a pitch shifter or an Eventide harmonizer to
double his lines.

Though isn't it mentioned in the liner notes to his "collection" cd that part of the inspiration for the playing was the Eagle's
tune "Hotel California" and that he just simply recorded his own harmony lines without the use of any effects.

Btw the Guitar World issue is Oct. 1988. I just don't have it handy @ the moment.

Bingo. This is an old analog trick. Jesse used it on guitar; Prince used it for vocal harmonies.

Ok, another question...those guitar headz that are familiar with Prince's "Count the Days"...he uses a similiar sound with the guitar, is that the same process that some feel Jesse is using on "I'm Just Wanting You"?
