For instance, we have other instincts left over from centuries of evolution - eg. fight or flee, where the body reacts to a perceived danger by the heartbeat increasing and adrenaline pumping in a fraction of a second, so that the human can more effectively run from the situation or fight. This instinct can manifest itself, for example, in some people when they just see a spider or a snake. We have evolved to control our fears and know that spiders and snakes are not the threat they once were, but that doesn't stop our instincts from taking over, if only for a few seconds before our brain re-establishes control. The desire for people, especially men, to procreate is a strong one. It was necessary in ancient history to ensure the survival of the species and that instinct is still there despite knowing that the world is over-populated as it is.
