Dez's Mondernaire I thought he said he was going to release the full version of this Prince song. Has he done it yet? Nothing on his website.

Yes, it's been released now. You can get your copy on E-bay -- search for "Dez Dickerson" -- he's selling a two-disk set of songs, including a couple early versions of Prince/Time songs that Dez had written. My CDs came with a nice book of photos and an extra CD (one of Dez's Christian releases) -- and he signed everything. Pretty cool. Check it out! It's nice to be able to finally hear more than just a snippet of a very cool song. Dez said Prince was very much involved in the production of "Modernaire" so that the sound fit in with the movie. Unfortunately, Dez doesn't include his own original version. Anyway, he does include a lot of other cool songs he's written over the last couple decades.

I found his book to be a little underdeveloped. He makes them seem like
a bunch of nerds who barely indulged in excess. Probably cant talk about certain things

I too think it was underdeveloped, but enjoyed many of the stories of the early years which we had never heard before, and I was a bit surprised that Dez suggested that many "innovative" things that Prince did were originally Dez's ideas. Hmmm... Anyway, I'm still waiting to read Vanity's book, but at this point, I doubt she'll ever complete it.

I believe Prince came up with the groove but Dez is credited for the lyrics to cool.

[Edited 7/11/05 20:56pm] No Prince performances, but a song by Prince, another by Dez & Prince, and then another that Dez wrote in its entirety but was later performed and produced by Prince for The Time's first album... "Prince and I collaborated on the recording ["Modernaire"] (unlike the other 30 songs on the retrospective, which I produced solo), which also accounts for his strong influence. He particularly pushed for me to find a new singing voice on the track, which he succeeded in helping me to accomplish" (Dez talks about "Modernaire" in Dez Dickerson: a retrospective, 1982-1987). He also talks about how Warner had planned to release the song twice -- once in Fall '83 and then again a year later. "On the original demo, I played all the instruments, including keys (hence the nursery school keyboard line). ...While Prince's rendition was more hyped-up New Wave, my original version was more like AC/DC meets power pop. Lyrically, I drew on real life experience from my own post-high school days..." (Dez talks about "After Hi School" in Dez Dickerson: a retrospective, 1982-1987). "One tool for creating a comfort zone for the audience [during Dez's solo touring] was doing a Prince song in our set. It had to be something that made sense -- we were a rock band, and I was a rock guitar player/front man. It also had to be believable in the context of our metallic power pop sound. 'When You Were Mine' fit the bill perfectly. ...This recording is from the 'Rebel Yell' tour, from our show in Austin, Texas" (Dez talks about "When You Were Mine" in Dez Dickerson: a retrospective, 1982-1987).

Lottsa cool stuff. When he played with P, Dez was the man. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Thanx. So If i get it well, there's a version of "Modernaire" without P playing on it, & a cover of "when u were mine" by Dez ? Can someone specify which songs involve what related 2 Prince & The Time please ?
