Jill is a great pick. Originally, J.J. had a MUCH bigger part in Purple Rain, but it was cut waaay down. I always felt P thought Jill was a threat to him. She's a great vocalist, which he used to death all over the 1999 album. BUT, because of that, I think he tried to hold her back later on. Dogging her out by allowing her part to be cut down, script wise, in Purple Rain. Doing the same AGAIN in the GB movie. He was constantly slapping her in the face with that shit. Jill was a strong willed woman, much in the same way as Lisa and Wendy. She probably didn't kiss his insecure ass enough, so his way of getting her back was treating her the way he did. I heard that P was somewhat jealous of Mark Brown. Mark was 18 when he first joined P on the Contoversy tour. He was with P on P's way up. He was 19 and 20 during the 1999 tour, and 21 during the Purple Rain explosion. U know Mark, being the ONLY other brother in the band, was living it up with the female fans. I heard P was very jealous of that. He felt Mark hadn't "payed his dues". It wasn't Mark's fault that he was as young as he was when he joined P and Mark's timing couldn't have been any better. But, I have to go with Andre. Andre's family basically took care of P when he had no where else to go. Andre's mother, who already had her own family, brought P's ass in. Fed him and put clothes on his back. And for P to do Andre the way he did, was waaay out fucked up. Andre and his family had something to do with P getting signed. Without them, P's state of mind would have not been there cuz he would have been more concerned with where in the fuck he was going to sleep.

I can't understand the love for Jill Jones voice. I think she has a terrible voice. I was very disappointed when I finally heard her CD. I don't think that chick is a threat to anyone.

You got to realize P is a pretty boy and he is always going to want to be the center of attention I can believe he gave Mark the only other brother around a hard time.

I have a feeling she would have done better, sticking with Teena and maybe Rick could have picked her up. His protoges got a sincere shot. The Mary Jane Girls had bigger/ more hits that Vanity 6 or A6. Teena is a star on her own, Rick resurrected the Temps. I just think Jill would have had a better shot, than Prince fickleness and letting his libido rule business (talentless Carmen getting spotlight, and Mayte-- not a strong singer getting all that opportunity to sing).

Personal choice. We all have them. Mine just happens to be J.J. During 82-84, J.J. was to me, P's best female vocalist. On his 1999 album, like I said, Jill is all over it. She brought extra "ooomph" to the title song in a big way and "Lady Cab Driver" wouldn't be what it is if J.J. wasn't on it. Visually, she brought a whole new diminsion to P's videos. Again, the 1999 video and "Automatic" was Jill's spotlight. Yeah, it took entirely too long to release Jill's album, and when it did come out, I was like "What the hell is this?". P was in his French Under The Cherry Moon phase and that shit spilled on to Jill's album. I felt J.J.'s album should have come out no later than 86. Around Mazariti's album. And it should have been some funk/rock material ala Teena Marie's Emerald City. That's what Jill should have been doing. I feel P tried to hold Jill back by giving her what he gave her as opposed to some top notch hit material that she deserved.

Jill would have sounded great singing over the rock tracks that Prince gave Margie Cox's band, Flash (which were never released), although I think Margie did a great job herself. That was some of the hardest rocking music I've heard Prince create.

I gotta check that out. I heard about it, but didn't know what the music was like. I never did like Margie's voice in Tamara and the Seen. But the music is rockin'? P wrote some hard tracks for them too? Yeah, I gotta check that shit out.

I completely agree.Jill's album has it's merits,but in the end,it seems as if she was handed a bunch of Prince and The Revolution outtakes.By 1987,songs like "G-Spot" and "All Day,All Night" sounded a little dated.Her album should have came out much sooner...1985 or so,when these songs still sounded fresh and original.She should have been able to benefit from the whole "Purple Rain" hype,like all of his other proteges.

Yep. Exactly. But, if that had happened, like it should have, J.J. would had ran away with it as far as fan support. She definately would had stole the spotlight from A6 with their no singing ass. Should have gave Jill a few of those songs. It would have gotten more mileage. Jill had/has a great look, people already knew her from the 1999 video at least. It would have been a no-brainer. J.J. was a built-in star and P knew it. That's why he did her the way he did. He wanted to control who was going to be "the one". If Jill wasn't kissing his ass the right way, then she could forget it.

What's funny is,Jill was always used to help out those proteges who weren't great singers.On the '1999' tour,she was singing behind a curtain during Vanity 6's set,to "assist" the girls with their weak vocals.She was also used on the Apollonia 6 album for the same reason.And if you listen to the chorus of Sheila E'.s song "The Belle Of St.Mark",you can clearly see that it is Jill providing the strong vocals.She was a valuable asset to his other proteges.That might explain why he took so long to get her own album completed.

The girl should have bounced over to Rick's stable. U can best believe Rick wouldn't have wasted Jill's talent.
