'Kamasutra' available for purchase as download

NPGMC has made the NPG Orchestra's 'Kamasutra' album available as a download independent of the 'Crystal Ball' download also offered in the Musicology store.

The 'Kamasutra' download is 9.99, or 7.77 for NPGMC members.

i think it's worth 7.77, unless you're able to luck out and find a copy of the crystal ball box set with it included for some crazy cheap price, which seems to be completely possible, but i couldn't begin to tell you where to look.

It's' good that they have put it as seperate download, makes it easier for those who only got the 4 CD Crytal Ball set and felt the were missing out.

But I have to say, I really never liked this CD. It's sort of synthesizer ochestrated instrumental - very bland and Middle Of the Road, very boring. You would have expected Prince to really do something experimental with this idea, but it just sounds uninspired, in my opinion.

My opinion: this album is uninspired and boring. If this supposed to be the soundtrack to a Kama Sutra performance... sleep takes over!

Yes it sounds like a bad Hammer Horror movie soundtrack and should be avoided.

Please don't pull my post again, it was hardly offensive or are the Mods in here that power crazed!!!

Yes it is dull, uninspiring and boring. Sounds to me like the sound track to a bad hammer horror movie from the 1970's - jangley music - I dont think ive listened to it through EVER!

there's no record of anything being moderated in this thread. it was most likely a bug or a glitch in the system. trust me, the moderators' bloodthirsty reign of power did not trample upon your impassioned Kamasutra manifesto. honest.

Actually the Hammer Horror scores of James Bernard, amongst others, is some of the most atmospheric ever composed for film. Kamasutra on the other hand was mostly just dull. I'm glad I've got the 5 disc version of Crystal Ball but I haven't listened to that particular disc since the first time. The Plan from Emancipation is a good example of what the albums like. Yawn!

Oh, while we're on the subject, enough with the downloads already! It's time that the NPGMC started offering these cuts as DISCS. Y'know, shiny CDs that you can keep even if your hard drive crashes. I'd gladly pay a little more to own the music instead of what is basically just an extended loan. You hear me Nelson?

i don't think kamasutra is the best thing he's ever done - not even close - but i do think there are a lot of interesting little ideas swimming around in the murk. it's not something i would give to one of my friends who like prince but can kinda take him or leave him. they'd leave this thing in a skipped heartbeat. but for fans who really enjoy paying attention to the details in his music, i think it can be a gratifying listen. it's not great, but it's not the aural hemlock that some folks make it out to be.

Yes I apologise, your right, I never meant to insult the late great James Bernard, what I meant to say was it sounded like some synth orchestral version of a Hammer score smile...and very cheesy it was too.

Wonder if he wanted to play that on the wedding night but all she wanted to hear was "Get The Dogs Out"

Well, it is a score for a ballet (whatever happened to that one actually???)

Kind of elevator-music, but nice for a background listening.

My wife likes it, I think it is too wishy washy.

Sometimes has this psychedilic "Around the world in a day" feeling to it music-wise, IMO (but must admit it has been ages since I last listened to it)

Don't buy it, it's boring as hell! I had been looking for ages to hear Kamasutra because I've always loved the orchestration by the Clare Fischer Orchestra on Prince's albums. But when I finally got it, it was a yawnfest beyond comparison. Be warned y'all!

I am wondering if those that don't like it...don't like it because it was the 5th disk and paled to the rest of the set of 5. If this was released on it's own...would you have thought differently about it?

No words, it's an instrumental, but not like C-Note, that had a live band feel to it, Kamasutra feels very much like Prince in the studio doing everything on synthesizers.

Xpectation also has no lyrics, but that is much more like C-Note with the band jamming together. Which is also very similar to NEWS.

Thinking about it, Prince has really done the instrumental thing to death!

Just curious
Which albums are not available only thru downloads?
And what do you think about download CD-R's versus the real CD with the art work etc?

Thanks

Currently available only as downloads are The Slaughterhouse, The Chocolate Invasion, Xpectation and C-NOTE.

And of course there is a splattering of individual tracks:
Glasscutter, Strange Relationship (live), 3 tracks live from Paisley Park, United States of Division, Silver Tongue, Magnificent, Controversy (live), Bataclan tracks (live)

Plus the live videos you could rip audio from:
Vanguard Jam, Question Of U, Reflection, Much More Music performance.

Real CDs are clearly better quality - essentially, mp3s and wmas do have worse sound quality than properly recorded .wavs on music CDs, although you can't always hear it if they are created well. Plus you've got all the packaging. But without all the packaging and delivery costs, downloads are cheaper for us and cheaper and easier for Prince to put out. CD writers are very cheap and useable these days so making your own CD-R is pretty simple.
