How come a lot threads can't be replied to?

I've noticed recently that a lot of threads are missing the 'Add a reply to topic' link. Yet they haven't been locked and they aren't controversial or even about duplicated topics. I've checked that I'm logged in.

What's happening to these threads? Is there a time expiry from the last posted message to a thread? Something else?

i believe there's an expriation date on them. i don't know how long it is, but i've noticed that threads from months ago can't be replied to. it went into effect during the last major round of updates a couple months ago.
