It can be many things, here are a few example taken from the site below

Example

In one of the picture threads i wrote
"I would post my nude picture in the thread but photobucket deleted them"

Some one here messaged me if i would show them my picture
There was no nude photo, I was just trolling

It means you post something that many people are bound to react strongly to and it's done in an attempt to derail the thread. That type of posting style doesn't further the discussion in any real way and the person that's "trolling" wants to divert the attention to him / herself.

The word comes from this fishing method originally

So, other people involved in the thread get dragged by the one that's "trolling" the thread. The idea doesn't have anything to do with trolls as "evil things", although that's what it's come to mean to most people.

Also if you have an opinion that differs from the original poster then you are a troll.

Example

"I don't think Michael Jackson molested young boys"

"I think he did molest those young boys but got away with it because of who he was"

"You're a fucking troll man"!!!!
