I have other questions for those in favor of this idea.

My situation as a fan could possibly leave me without a forum to use. Personally, I think that the old stuff, in general, is of a higher quality than the newer stuff. However, I enjoy much of the new music. So will there be another forum for people like me?

Furthermore, I suppose that many other orgers are like me in that they do not have a set before and after line that divides their opinion on the music. Let me elaborate:

As I said, I prefer the old stuff to the new stuff (but I love most the of the new stuff). However, I think some of the old stuff is not great. If I had my choice of Controversy or 3121, I would take 3121. If I had to play ATWIAD or Musicology, I would play Musicology. However, I would take 1999, Purple Rain, or Sign over just about everything (except for possibly the symbol album). So I ask once again, where does this leave me?

I can say one thing, the forums would be seriously boring if everyone just agreed on everything. I think the Prince: Music and More forum is fine just the way it is!

As long as you're not being negative about every little thing Prince says/does/sings about these days, I'd put you in my corner.

It gets a little sickening to me when people start getting off on bashing Prince. I'm not saying you have to love (or even like) EVERYTHING about the guy, but on the other side of the coin, don't come on to a FAN site and write every one of your posts about how Prince is a "has-been," an "evil asshole," etc. The troll need to find a new place to bitch in.

In short, there is too much negativity here, and not nearly enough positivity. If you want to rip Prince a new sphincter, do it on another board. It's fine if you have a different opinion than I do, but there is a fine line between constructive criticism and downright HATE. I don't care if Prince is "in the public eye," it still doesn't excuse the crass B.S. some of you spew on here.
The thing is, all opinions are welcome on this board. Prince had message boards that were overall positive that he himself had taken down. The alternative is that the more positive people have to put up with the not so positive ones. That is not going to change. I have said time and again that people who are more positive should focus on that instead of continuing to shine light on those you all consider to be negative. If it's trolling, some of you make the trolls very happy by getting riled up by that stuff. Some of you bring yourselves down to the levels of those people and become just as negative by making nasty comments about these people. Just as some of you wish that some would leave and go elsewhere, that is also an option for you. I've been here ten years and the atmosphere has not changed and I suspect it never will.

It's gone from criticism and opinions given with some semblance of respect, to just outright ugly HATE spoken with no indication of human decency whatsoever. Prince isn't the messiah, but he doesn't deserve to be completely doody on, either.

Well, the reason I lurked before ever posting here was some of the terrible stuff said about Prince as a person so I disagree with you that things changed. And from my point of view, there about four people here that diss Prince just for no logical reason, just because. Those few people succeed so much in pissing you guys off that it's become quite the spectacle.

Although I think the word "hater" is a lazy term to refer to someone and is definitely juvenile, the "lovers" are responsible for the "haters" winning. Skip over their posts. Report the flaming instead of going back and forth with people because you make yourselves look as bad as them.

I have no idea why there is an assumption that people who diss Prince are miserable people. Do those who then diss those people, miserable, too?

Outside of the people I know here in real life, I don't give people from this place a second thought. This place and its experience is what I make it. If I want it to be positive, then that is what it will be for me. I am an adult. I can make the choice to let the things said here roll off my back without harping on them over and over again here.

I have never understood the attacks on Prince himself by some people here but I would never be so arrogant as to make a judgment on those people because of what they say on the internet.

Beauty is subjective. If I do not think something is beautiful or I don't simply like a song, then I am free to say so. In the non-Prince forum, people say some of the most horrible things about people and their music. I see no one speaking to the vitriol over there. Do we only care because Prince is someone we like?

At the end of the day, some people say things to rile others up. Some of you guys fall for it. But if you can state why you disagree with that person without stooping to their level, those viewing all this from the outside won't group everyone together.

It is really disappointing that Prince himself lets what people on the internet say about him to the point he writes music about it. Yes, I understand he is human like the rest of us but he shines light on the negativity as well.

Perhaps there should just be a "Hide This Post" and/or a "Hide All Posts by This User" option right next to the "Reply w/ Quote" and "orgNote" links under each post?

You could be right, and I could be wrong. Maybe there was just as much negativity back in the day, and I just found it easier to overlook. shrug I don't think that's the case, but let's just agree to disagree.

There are A LOT more than 4 Grumpy McPurplepantses on this site, and I don't appreciate them constantly attacking someone I have tremendous respect for. Yes, I know Prince doesn't know me from a hole in the ground. Yes, I know I don't know the "real" Prince outside of his public persona. Does that mean I can't be upset at the way the Grumpies bash him?

The h-word maybe is a lazy term. But calling them something gentler like "the disenchanted" would be even more stupid, not to mention pretentious. And I know I'm gonna get blasted for this, but mzkqueen03 is RIGHT: the [h-word]s won't stop until you're as miserable as they are. Skipping over posts is easier said than done, and I'd rather not get into the pitfalls of reporting posts.

Perhaps there should just be a "Hide This Post" and/or a "Hide All Posts by This User" option right next to the "Reply w/ Quote" and "orgNote" links under each post?
You can choose to be upset over whatever you choose. I can't think of a single celebrity worthy of me defending, but that is me. I will not blast you for being different that me.

I dislike the word 'hater' because of its meaning. I don't think anyone actually hates the guy and to infer someone is jealous of him is far-fetched to me, too. I have never wished to be Prince (I can't speak for others though wink). People who long for the old days get labeled "hater", too and I don't think that's fair either. I see nothing wrong with being a fan of that era of music only. Everyone has artists that they dug but no longer dig anymore but some Prince fans seem to take offense at that.

And like I said before, I don't believe saying something about someone on the internet makes someone miserable. If that was the case, a lot of Prince fans are miserable, too because the moment someone says something bad about Prince or the moment another celebrity is compared to Prince, some fans call those people everything but a child of God.

Thank you for the peaceful discourse, bluefish. biggrin

The fact that this has been suggested several times in the 6 years I've been a member indicates that it's doubtful it's gonna happen...so be it.

I don't have much patience with extremes in either direction or with clowns posting the same nonsense over and over just to be seen. I keep saying it and I'll say it again. The ONLY effective way to deal with problem threads, bait or trolls is to IGNORE it or REPORT it.

Every response to a fool pushes the thread to the top of the forum and every response to a troll feeds their addiction to attention.

It's that simple.

Agreed.

I also tend to choose to view threads from the forum view in order of date first posted. In that way, I see threads when they start and, if I choose to make a contribution because I am interested in the topic, I can still choose to look at later contributions through the recent My Org view.

If the thread is one in which I have no interest, I don't respond and I will likely never look at it again, as it will sink in the Forum view rapidly as new threads are added.

I simply run the risk of missing an interesting post turning up in a thread after I have first read it. Generally speaking, I can still see which threads are attracting a lot of attention from the Forum view and visit again if I wish.

If I think the thread breaks a rule, I'll report it and usually refer to the rule broken (unless it's very obvious), and the Mods deal with it.

Honestly, yes. I feel that a person being an open target for hostility simply by virtue of being a celebrity is WRONG.

As much as I dislike certain celebs, I don't constantly berate them on a message board, and I certainly wouldn't think of dumping all over them on boards meant for their FANS. That is just idiotic and pointless; what does/would it accomplish, besides making me "feel better" about myself for putting someone down? rolleyes

The Prince discussion forum has always existed for discussion about Prince from the people with views from across the spectrum, and some of the views will inevitably be ones with which others will disagree - people are exchanging subjective opinions (albeit some people wrongly consider on occasions that their opinion is a proven fact).

Offensive, vulgar, obscene, threatening, abusive, excessively profane, insulting, racist, homophobic, hateful, useless off-topic, or inflammatory posts are all accommodated within the existing rules, which everyone has agreed to abide by.

As has been explained already, if someone considers a post has infringed a rule, they can choose to report it to a moderator, mentioning the rule that has been broken. The moderator then reaches a decision. If someone disagrees with the decision, there is even a right of appeal to the owner of the site.

People have co-existed succesfully for a long time in this forum without need for any unnecessary division.
