Vintage Prince Forum Petition **** Mods, please do not move this to site discussion because the people who need to see this frequent THIS forum and may not see it, if it's banished to Org Oblivion. ****
Thanks! I was going to watch the Ellen Show, even though I very seldom watch tv now-a-days because it sucks but I was going to watch because I wanted to see Prince. As I was looking for the remote that I haven't seen in quite a while...something dawned on me. Why am I breaking my neck to find a remote to watch someone that's not who I really want to see, at all? So instead of watching the Ellen Show. I cued up some vintage Prince from my collection and the first song to play was "Just As Long As We're Together" (Live, somewhere in the world) and all I could think was, "There's the Prince that I know and love!" That's the Prince, I want to talk about but it seems to me that there's a massive effort underway to wipe out all remnants of that Prince. The mere mention of anything he's done prior to the year 1999 seems to be either taboo or instantly labeled as being "stuck in the past". Let me be frank, I don't like new Prince. I just don't. I don't care that he's on Ellen or Tavis's tv shows. I don't care about who he is or is not dating. I don't care about his new music, videos or website. Maybe I am stuck in the past but that's where all the fun and sho' 'nuff funk is! That's what I am now and always will be a fan of. That's WHY I still come to this site! So...since there are indeed many, many others that feel as I do and it's causing such conflict in this forum...I propose we have a forum dedicated to Vintage Prince. That way those of us that are "stuck in the past" can stay there and have wonderful discussions about what's great to US, without offending those that want to discuss the new glasses he's sporting, his newest protege or whatever floats their boat. If you think this is something that should be given consideration by Ben and the Mods. signify that by copying this emoticon and if you don't think it's a good idea, please explain why, articulately and without being a piss ass because I'm in a good mood and I'd really like to keep it that way. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

This is my take, and please forgive me if I'm stating the obvious... but, it seems that all topics related to Prince whether it be past or present, haters or fams, etc is assigned to the appropriate forum - this one. Once you propose segregating these discussions, where does it end? Create a forum for each of the fan categories in which one might classify themselves? And for what ultimate purpose... to TRY to eliminate the postings of opinions that may differ? Or to keep certain "undesirables" out of the group? Seems like you could just as easily avoid the threads with which you have no interest or elect to not respond to baiters within any chosen thread. Perhaps I misunderstand your intent and I'm sure someone else could articulate a response better than my own. Anyway, jmho http://prince.org/msg/105/307615

Couldn't have said it any better. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I once proposed there be a forum just for folks who want to post the same pics over and over or talk about what color he looks best in, and who he should date etc., because these types of posts were all you'd see when you logged on, thus relegating posts started that actually were discussions about music (old and new) three or four pages back. This idea was shot down.
While my idea was segregating out certain posts because they were becoming redundant and pushing other discussions pages and pages out of view, your idea is segregating differing opinions which I don't agree with. . [Edited 4/23/09 12:00pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you for responding. Our Prince fan community is a diverse one. To me, that's what has always made being a Prince fan so cool. I knew that I appreciated and shared a passion with people from all walks of life and as different as we may have been, our commonality was always Prince and his music. "Soon as we got there Good times were rolling White, Black, Puerto Rican, everybody just a-freakin' Good times were rolling That's not just a song lyric to me. I grew up living that, experiencing that. As I said earlier, to me there seems to be an all out effort to erase that part of Prince's legacy because Prince himself has changed. That's all well and good for him but why should I give up my memories of who he once was? My suggestion for a Vintage Prince forum is not to segregate any differing of opinions because I welcome those. I made my suggestion to free up this forum of a lot of unnecessary bickering because to me, even though everyone is diverse and likes what they like, there seems to be less and less talk about Vintage Prince, the one who brought most of us here in the first place and that's where all the drama begins because it's like I can't talk about Vintage Prince because I'm "stuck in the past" and people that are into new Prince want to move on. I can't talk about new Prince because I ain't feeling new Prince at all, so I'm being negative and "stuck in the past". I've even heard that since I don't like new Prince, I should just get over Prince altogether but why should I do that when all things Vintage Prince were very much a great part of my life and STILL make me very happy to this day? I just want to talk about the good times and remember the Prince that I adore with people that understand without somebody else raining on my parade because I'd rather talk about "Head" than anything that's on LotusFlow3r. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I personally object to the notion, and I will try to explain why.
1. It is easy to tell era of concern for most topics just by looking at the title. For example, one of the hot topics of late is that Prince should have toured for SOTT. That is obviously concerning the 1987 era. Topics that say LotusFlow3r or MPLSound concern current Prince music. 2. Many topics encompass the entire era. Sometimes there is a thread asking orgers to rate Prince albums. Others might ask to compare albums from 2 periods (ex 82-86 and 2004-2009). Recently, there has been a lot of talk about how "$" has a sound that is reminiscent of an earlier (vintage) period. Under your proposed system, I do not know where the topics that require cross-era inquiry would be placed. We could lose some interesting threads if we couldn't look at eras holistically. 3. It may lead to an increase in work for the mods. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

moved to site discussion forum.
if we keep ONE thread where it doesn't belong because someone says so, then we have to keep EVERY thread where people tell us to put it or else we're being unfair. so, yeah. sorry. and this forum is hardly a no-man's land. if the thread provokes discussion, it doesn't matter which forum it's in. trust me.

I feel ya there... and I grew up the same way. I share the same passion for Prince's work, maybe more so now, as I did back in 1983. And, I don't begrudge any one's right to prefer any particular era that they deem golden... to me, it's ALL golden. Yes, Prince has changed; he's grown, matured, made lifestyle changes but I don't think that in any way detracts from the diversity he embraced and still embraces to this day. As you said, it's that very diversity that drew us to him as fans initially. As far as trying to eliminate unnecessary bickering, I'm afraid that perfect forum does not and can not exist My suggeston is to start your vintage appreciation thread(s) and I am very sure that those that share that same passion will join you http://prince.org/msg/105/307615

If you start the thread, I'm sure they'll be a lot of participation of people bringing back memories of Prince in the early days of his career. [Edited 4/25/09 5:09am]

But, seriously... I would love to see some more threads started about vintage Prince. That's some fun shit. Fire up the threads. I ain't keen on creating another forum that might cause mod-madness. The forums here are pretty straight forward as to what content should be discussed, but folks still screw that up and threads get moved around.
I would go for a Fams only forum though, since Prince is apparently against taking those nuts to Lotusflow3r by not offering discussion there. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Although there is a broad and general consensus (the 80s), I think it depends on what you define as 'Vintage Prince'. One man's 'Purple Rain' is anothers 'Holy River'. Thus, creating such a forum seems a bit null and void I'm afraid. There's Joy In Expatriation.

If this is similar to what you're asking, Ben already mentioned that he was considering making a "hardcore fan forum"
for those interested in speaking about the music and all. http://prince.org/msg/3/296384 http://prince.org/blog/20...ke-closed/

IMO, having a separate "vintage" Prince forum is no different than having the Associated Artist forum, or the concert forum. As long as a CLEAR break off point is set (You could set it at when he first changed his name to , just to make it easy). Facebook, I haz it - https://www.facebook.com/Nikster1969

Got to say, I don't think this would be the most productive idea. Too many topics would span the bridge of old and new to make that practical, and then there is the issue of who decides what counts as Vintage Prince and what doesn't.
Perhaps the mods could reign in some of the nuttier among us instead? There are, after all, several perfectly reasonable people who dig Princey's new material as well his old. I, for one, would appreciate a heavier hand in locking or deleting certain kinds of posts or threads. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

In the name of not getting my ass snipped for flaming, I won't name names. But I don't think that's necessary. Certain people have been allowed for too long to fuck up the M&M forum to the point of several faithful fans and all around cool people leaving the forum and even the site altogether, and we all know who the worst offenders are. I appreciate that the mods have a HUGE job already, but I think it would be a good thing for the forum and the sanity of the rest of us if certain kinds of threads could just be locked from the get-go.
