sorry reading between the lines....housequake messed up big time...not the fans on the hq site...look the guy "thats prince" has put rules up , hq did not follow come on ...face up to it they messed up he got pi*sed and went into one.. ...play by the rules P has reasons and i don't care what they are just follow them if not don't have the website...P looked like he gave them the rope but they used it the wrong way? unless he's trying to create media hype about his new website????

There are always two sides to every story, but the thing that I can't shake is Prince's own website history.

I paid good money to join one of them, bought songs from it, and now the website is gone and the songs I purchased cannot be played.

Then, Prince started another website. It was OK, and in fact was really cooking when he would put up the songs from his 21 nights run. But he shut that down, too.

Now, he's coming again with another "new" website. But what will it cost? What will it provide?

Prince's history is not good in this respect. I will take a "wait and see" attitude.

And I can PROMISE you that I will NOT buy ANYTHING from Prince's website that I can't IMMEDIATELY make hard copies of. Not because I want to share it, but because of what he did on npgmc.com.

I'm not EVER paying for anything that is not PERMANENT.

Wow I'm one of the biggest Prince supporters on this site but damn why is the brotha so damned petty. They say that genuis and insanity are closely tied sometimes and maybe Prince straddles this line.

Why can't he obsess about giving us all the music past, present, and future instead of obsessing about what a small bunch of fans do on websites dedicated to him? Its just not healthy behavior.

None of us can control the world not even some one as talented as Prince. Why he can't just sit back and let people love him is so tragic. Well maybe without all his issues we would have never gotten all the great music who knows. Its just sad that he wastes so much good will fighting over small things. Control freak indeed.

I'm surprised - all this venting of anger and no-one's yet mentioned...

Nowhere did PRINCE advise us to do that, and nowhere did Prince ever intimate the music we bought from him would only be temporarily available to us.Prince screwed up there, and that makes the investment in his site an unfair value.

From my P.O.V., Aaron and HQ.com very well understood the rules and/or guidelines they were asked to operate under by Prince. And for the most part... they complied. However, they have/had a tendency to dance in the grey areas a bit too much.

That banner was fan art.... but a fan not knowing any better could not have distinguished it from the 'official' banners at all. By Housequake using the banner as part of the site's graphics.... they didn't break any rules flat out... but could easily be viewed as still breaking the 'spirit' of the rules. This point becomes stronger if any part of the Lotusflow3r site's graphics were used in part of the graphic. Normally what constitutes a 'fair' usage can become murky in the context of which it is used.

Bottom line though... Aaron didn't have to shut down HQ... he choose to do it. He could have switched the banner and kept on trucking... but he obviously tired of the dance. But it took two to tango. EVERYONE knows how anal Prince has become about this shit.... so I do question the judgment to dabble in areas known to be sensitive.

If Prince asked for them not to use his likeness or anything which represents his likeness (the symbol) in any of the sites graphics (like the header) and they use a graphic with some thing which 'resembled' his symbol anyway... they were honoring the request... but not the spirit.

No tears will come from my eyes over the site (a couple people pissed in my kool-aid).... and I won't be less of a Prince fan because its gone. It's been all about the muzik for me for decades prior to me even knowing that fan sites existed... and it will continue to be about the muzik long after their gone. That sites was not the be all to end all.... life will move on... and the fans will just congregate elsewhere. Like here for instance.

From all that I've been reading on here, it sounds like Prince didn't tell Aaron to close Housequake, but simply stated that the banner the fan created must be removed as there was an issue that it might be considered official. It sounds like Prince and his employees were trying to work with Aaron, having even sent the official banners to him, but Aaron made the decision to post unofficial banners with the official banners. Prince has always been very aware of his image and what he allows to be released, and is very protective of that image, and anything related to that image has to be approved by him. He has always been that way, he will always be that way.

So it sounds like ppl are pissed off at Prince because he asked for a banner to be removed because it might be considered by others as being an official banner when it's not, and ppl are wanting to blame Prince for Housequake closing when it's Aaron's choice to close Housequake, not Prince's. I'm confused as to why ppl are angry with Prince? He has 3 albums about to be released, he has a website about to be launched, he wants to make sure that everything is in place before the release and launching of the site, so that all PR is positive and comes from him and his people, including what gets released before hand (official banners), because believe it or not, the press does watch what Prince does and what Prince puts out, and they do watch his fan sites (as p.org and housequake have both been mentioned in articles). Anything unofficial might end up being bad PR, or creating an image about the product he's about drop that goes against the image he wants it to have.

Or at least this is my take on what Gav posted and why Prince didn't want unofficial banners out there.
