To whom it may concern: PLEASE GO TO A JAVA CHAT FORMAT!!!

the current chatroom is prohibitively difficult to follow and keep refreshed. Is there ANY way we can go to Java?

Heavenly

I like the chat room as it is. not everybody on this site speaks fluent English, and sometimes it takes time to read what people say. with this chat room I can choose the speed of the refresh. the lines don't scrool down until I decide.
This chat room is the most comfortable one I've ever used, and most regulars in the chat room would agree with me on that one.

Of course, but it would mean writing a Java chat system or buying it. We haven't had the time to write one, and buying one isn't really an option. I'd say we'll get around to look at it soon but there are other things that need fixing first. I'll look into it - I agree the current chat system is a bit hard to follow.

Just my opinion. I love the org chat. It's unique, we have a certain degree of control on the interface, and as Heavenly stated, there are also a lot of people who have English as a second language. It helps for them to have control over the chatroom, just like we do right now. biggrin Plus I love the lines, they really help to separate one post fromt the next.

I'd like it to be more like the Yahoo chat system, personally.

we used to have a java chat. and we made ben bring back the old one biggrin in fact, i "made" him bring back the color scheme of the old chatroom when he changed it all up into gray when 2.0 was launched.

so keep your chat suggestions to yourself. we may get what you ask for, and then we'll all be stuck with that shit again. sad

Well if we do it, we'll do it right this time.
A decent Java chat client would kick the arse of the current solution.

the people that actually use it like it the way it is now. why take the advice of people that don't actually chat there regularly? if they aren't smart enough to figure out that room, then i doubt they're going to be too quick on the uptake trying to keep up with conversations in there when it switches over to java.

The chatroom as it stands now is a pile of shit. That's why it isn't popular - it is only populated by a small group of people who have the patience to put up with it.

Improving it would be no bad thing.

Says me!

The chat system as it stands is currently broken, IMO. It's barely useable. However there's no reason why we couldn't write a Java chatter (given the time) that does all of the things you guys like about the current system.

it's worked just fine for 6 years. if you'd actually spend time in it, even you would figure out how to use it. that there are usually no less than 20 people in it during the day seems that there are plenty who think it's just fine. but i guess if you need all kinds of bells and whistles to make your chat experience better, be my guest... just please don't get rid of the old one if you do put up a new java chat, because i'll think you'll find that no one will be using the new room and we'll have to go back to the old one again anyway.

I don't know if a Java format is necessary, but I think it might be nice to have IRC-style "kick" and "ban" functions to deal with the occasional "problem user."

The vast majority of people in the chat are fine--I see this as an extraordinary tool to be used against those few folks who purposefully disrupt the chat room for their own amusement.

What do you folks think?

Agreed, it's much needed. Most people are fine but there's always a few who choose to abuse the service and ruin it for others. Attention seekers etc.
