Alias Accounts can this be eliminated? I know only Ben can have access to ppl's IP.addresses, but can it be where their IP address is tracked so that it's known how many alias' are coming from the same computer? and Ben can pinpoint who is who .. true, they could use other computers, but they'd have to do alot of work doing that.. [Edited 1/21/08 14:55pm] IP addressing is not quite as clear cut as that. Given an account can be logged in to from any internet device i could be at home,on my blackberry,at work etc etc. Also many orgers have spent time with each other so tracking say my home IP address will show that many orgers have logged in from here. IP tracking is a general method but will not 100% nail down who is who. It is a guide but it is not definitive. There are many trolls with alter accounts here and if an orger is banned then i am pretty sure that the mods will ban any obvious tied accounts. IE i have another account with the same avvie and a signature saying its me for when i run out of posts but if they were to ban everyone that had logged in from my IP then half the org would be gone. Trolls will appear. It is life, the best way to get rid of a troll is to not react however i am no one to talk about that. What we really need to do is try and understand people. The even that i assume sparked this off was what just happend in P+R and that was just straight out mob mentality. It all comes down to which side of the fence you see yourself on this issue and in the end understanding and kindness will make things alot easier on everyone. ![]()

not just the P&R forum .. there's a few folks around who are in other forums and threads are locked .. cause ppl completely went 'pit-bull' on orgers and.. one particular person im thinking of.. i really believe has 3 or 4 accounts.. when they post .. it's the same 'im better and know more than you, condescending, name calling vibe ... and no amount of being nice to them is gonna help .. the thread gets worse and eventually locked... (im referring to one particular one.. who doesnt frequent P&R) [Edited 1/21/08 16:11pm]

we, as mods, have access ip addresses but its no longer clear cut. there are sites that allow folks to mask their ips now...
as far as alias accounts...i can't recall what the mods decided was our policy because its not something i really have to deal with in the forum i moderate. Space for sale...

From what I remember, we basically reserve the right to ban an alias, but if there's no trouble we likely won't. In addition, action taken agaisnt one account will apply to all accounts a user has, so there's incentive to "behave" on all sides, no matter who you may be logged in as. As others have said, there are no clear cut ways for us to always tell if someone is someone else, we only have good indications. |

The intent tends to be poor. It's impossible nor do I care, to understand someone who's not up-front about themselves. It's in the "anonymous complaint" department. I mean, i am no fool, i work in the internet security business and there are some jokers on here that swear blind IN PUBLIC that they are not someone else when i know damn well for a fact that they are and that is what gets annoying when they feel they can act as they wish because "no one knows who i am". It is cowardly and childish.

[Edited 1/23/08 19:58pm] Grrrr! WE CANNOT READ ORGNOTES!!!! ![]() ![]() However... We mods CAN see your ip addresses very clearly, and the site tells us how many names have been used on that computer's ip address. In other words, for any orger on the site, in their personal history, it would list an alias as "also known as" and list the alias org name. When we ban an orger all the aliases are banned too. On site. There is no clear cut policy on alias accounts, personally I don't get the appeal, but - if you are doing things you shouldn't - you will be shut down! ![]() |

It is not a pleasant experience being falsly accused of having alias accounts.
It is never good to jump to conclusions. Different people can indeed have access to the same computer. Families do indeed live in the same house at times and visit each other often. Friends do visit and people do use public computers at the library and work I have never posted under any other name on this site. You can't do away with or shut down alter accounts unless you increase the daily posting limit. Why they haven't done that I don't know. I'm sure I'm one of many people who has an alter purely for those times when 50 posts just ain't enough.
