What is Prince about?

Jehovah Witnesses condemn
homosexuality...

We can't have an opinion on him...

He's happy enough taking our money...

I've loved Prince since i discovered Dirty Mind(in a bargain bin)in 1981. I bought it becuase i loved the cover (plus i was only 9).. but hearing the music was incredible.

This is the 1st time i find myself actually disliking him. For all these years of discussing artistic freedom and now trying to silence his fans is absurd.
So what.. an artist can discuss what they want but the general public can't?

Prince has become dull and middle aged. I never thought i'd type such i thing.

First he goes after a grandma that videotaped a child dancing to his music...now he goes after his fan base.

Can someone get a hold of Sheila E. and ask her to slap some sense into him, then drag him away from his computer and back to Paisley Park so they can create some REAL music?

Rather than the process of physical interaction to settle a dispute,, those with $$, just use attorneys, and other services, who absorb and handle it all.
It can also be a form of abuse
Which hasn't been brought up.
And needs to be.

Prince probably believes the site deprives him, or take liberties with what's his, and he needs to take action. Nothing is being taken away! Quite the contrary.... it's added to his popularity and PR.

I think what also is happening is there's a long history of Prince vs the fans stuff going on. From Uptown to the collective nonsense, Prince seems to have this hate-hate relationship with the hard core fans.
Its just hard to look at this objectively with history.

It really is.

And you know he's going to come out and say:

"Fams,

Our cre8or has blessed me with the gifts eye share with the world. Eye feel blessed 2 b able 2 do so. Eye only ask 4 the same respect u would show 2 ur friends and family, which is 2 use my image and art only with my permission. Eye am asking my fams 2 respect my wishes. It is meant in the spirit love4oneanother. All praise 2 the almighty Jehova.

Peace, Prince"

And his Fams are going to go, "aw, u know, he's right, it is just a matter of respect. we can talk about our love of his music without actually posting the lyrics. we know them all anyway! the h8ers should really go somewhere else. we love u, Prince! the check is in the mail. . ."

And the rest of us are going to go, "mutual respect doesn't generally involve lawyers rolleyes ".

And then either the fansites will roll over, or shut down, or they will find the resources to fight him. And all of those options are lame.

And WHY are things in this state?

Because the man gots issues.

We all do, right? If we were only gonna love issue-free people, it would be a lonely world. People can have issues. People can express their issues. People can ask for help with their issues. All of that applies to Prince.

What I've had about enough of, though, is people who think it is their RIGHT to make their own pathology into everybody else's problem. Which is what Prince is doing. And I can feel all kinds of happy mushy stuff towards him and his music, but his behavior is ridiculous and we've got every right to say so.

And certainly the right to stand up for ourselves.

This makes complete sense to me...

and as for the beginning of your post..giggle giggle giggle

Then that is his fault for being so sloppy in his business ventures.

Most of us could forgive an honest mistake but we have years of experience of Prince doing EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING so it is hardly unbelievable that he was in on it from the ground up.

[Edited 11/7/07 14:42pm]

1) I never said that it wasn't his fault - the boss is responsible for the employees...

2) If there is lots of precedence for Prince doing such things, why are so many people so extremely upset then?

People are upset PRECISELY because he keeps doing things like this. Now he's going after the websites for dancing babies in home videos, and chat forums about his career? Enough with the litigation happy antics already. I'm not a member of the other sites, so I'm not sure how they may or may not have broken any laws. But everyone knows the org is strict about not allowing Prince's copyrighted materials (ESPECIALLY MUSIC AND CONCERTS) to be sent, traded, or downloaded here. Those issues are CLEARLY addressed at the heading of the Prince Music & More Forum. I URGE everyone here to go and listen to podcast on the Home page because Ben discusses the issue AT LENGTH. At the end of the day, while he may be offended about some random fan photo or body tattoo of his silly symbol, I betcha Prince wasn't turning these site members concert ticket and fan club membership money away when they showed up.

Sorry, but he is tripping confused

Check the prince.org blog entry that Ben posted about why the image gallery is gone. There is something about it in there...obviously not the exact legal demand, but maybe will answer your question.

ps. I'm sorry you've felt like you can't say what you feel here (not on this thread, the Org in general). hug

On behalf of AEG Worldwide and NPG / PRINCE, we would kindly ask you not to file-share illegal / unauthorized
bootleg and pirate recordings of PRINCE (whether through XXX or elsewhere). For your info, XXXX is now being
closed down and we would again kindly ask you not to try and join any att empted replacement ring, network, forum or

As you may be aware, web-traffic relating to PRINCE's intellectual property rights is now being monitored and, where
appropriate, removed … .. and not just by Web Sheriff, but also by music industry associations / attorneys so, if you
insist upon collecting bootleg / pirate recordings - which, obviously, PRINCE would rather that you didn't - then please

On behalf of AEG Worldwide and NPG / PRINCE, we do appreciate that - of course - you are valued fans of / are

but, by the same token, you must also appreciate that, by distributing bootleg or pirate recordings (or linking to similar
material), you are potentially causing considerable inconvenience and we are sure that you would not want to be
personally responsible (or liable) for any of the resulting damage and dsiruption.
Whilst writing, we’d add that PRINCE / NPG and AEG Worldwide are not at all against free music but, at the end of
the day, it should be (and is) the artist’s decision as to whether or n ohte effectively allows the unauthorized distribution
of (unauthorized) material on-line - as it’s HIS MUSIC / PERFORMANCE !! Thank you, again, for respecting their

See, now to me, this is a bit different. I think we all *know* filesharing & especially of live/unauthorized recordings is illegal. So if you choose to do it and get caught, I don't really think you have any grounds to complain.

Neither posting photos of Prince that he does not own the rights to nor critically discussing his music are illegal; which is why I am supporting PFU.

The reason why this letter irritates me is because it is EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN on this site to share or inquire about how to obtain bootlegs. Links to Prince performances are also not allowed to be posted. EVERYONE knows this here and I've always thought is was an honorable thing that this rule is strictly enforced here. And I believe the site does an excellent job of moderating this issue.

But the second reason why I'm irritated is this idea that he would want to control his likeness to the point of fan submitted artwork (photography included), or control topics discussed about his music to the point of threatening to shut a site down.

Yes it's different, and to be clear, it is wholy unrelated to the org.
This involves a chatroom where people also share recordings that are not and have never been commercially available.
Of course this place doesn't have a leg to stand on, should not be part of PFU because it's an entirely different issue and it will probably be closed down by the end of today.

What irritates me is that this place has been around for a long time (almost as long as the org), and Prince and his people have known about it from the onset. The reason they allowed it is because anything even remotely considered of commercial interest to Prince could never be shared, and more importantly, this place played a major role in killing the commercial bootleg trade by spreading every recording that appeared for free, within a day of its release.
But somehow, a day after PFU launches, it needs to close down, compensate Prince, hand over lists of users and post a public apology.

Thanking God just means that you don't have to give any credit to any actual people besides yourself for putting in the effort and money to get where you are, be it fans, record companies, or collaborators. And then you can treat them like shit, because they don't matter and didn't have anything to do with your success. We've seen this for years with Prince.

I thank God everyday for the things I have, and I don't give credit to any people or MYSELF for what I have. I can't explain it. It's a way of life. My employer nor my family nor any acquaintenance is responsible for the blessings in my life - God is. I take Prince's thankfulness in the same way I give mine; as honest and genuine.

God is ultimately responsible...yes BUT you are to have gratitude for those who have helped you. Prince still NEEDED the fans to purchase the music, to go to the concerts, etc. There are many, many, many talented people without supportive fans, a record deal, etc. and there should be a spirit of gratitude for their support. Just seems very unappreciative to not give some thanks to those who did support your career even though you know God is in control. We are not to take advantage of our blessings by being mean spirited or arrogant towards those who supported us. This is what Prince is doing.

Why should you define how Prince shows grattitude to the people who buy his music? Prince is a musician foremost, the Indigo nightclub aftershow gig for was certainly some form of payback in my book. Do you think the guy at the store owes you grattitude when you buy a pint of milk? He owes nothing and as far as I'm concerned if Prince want's to limit the amount of published information about him then it's his choice. He has never asked to have some website where tons of people post pics of him he'd rather forget and post his lyrics out of context. You don't own someone cos you like their art or you bought they're cd. Controlling personal information is a struggle in this day and age so I say good luck to him.

I hope Prince beefs up his security. Some of what I've read on this board is very incitable and filled with hate...references to his dead baby, physical assault, death. There are a whole lot of mentality unstable people in the world and some of them happen to be Prince fans. I hope not to hear that someone has put a bullet to his head.

Is it really THAT serious? It's one thing to say you hate what he's doing or to think that what he's doing is stupid, but to be passionate about your hate for a man that you don't know...I just don't get it. confused

I'm with u on that one... I don't hate prince nor do I wish him any harm. I think that sort of vitriol really needs to be checked. First of all because it relinquishes our moral high-ground, (imagine a press conference where prince holds a slective reading of our most infamous), and secondly because it's still a crime to treathen someone with violence.

Is it really THAT serious? It's one thing to say you hate what he's doing or to think that what he's doing is stupid, but to be passionate about your hate for a man that you don't know...I just don't get it. confused

I can see where you're coming from with the mentally unstable comment, but Prince was the one who changed his name to a symbol. Who's more mentally unstable... Prince or his fans? There is truth to everything in life, from a certain point of view.

uh, yeah BUT prince isn't cursing us or saying things like 'they can fuck off and die'

i'm surprised the MODS have permitted some of the more rabid and hate-filled posts to remain on this thread. in fact from what i've seen posted by 'fans' on this and the prior thread, i'm really beginning to side with prince on this subject
