Being a troll is shit stirring for the hell of it, like advocating capital punishment even though you don't really believe in it, and present really extreme opinions even though they're not yours.

Trool 7 up, 3 down A troll plus a tool. Wow, that guy is a troll AND a tool, what a trool. 2. trool 1 thumb up trool: a person who enters a blog comments conversation with the intent to hijack it or divert it from it's subject and tone but does so in such a clumsy, clueless manner as to provoke laughter and derision rather than humorless animosity. etymology: the word, trool, was "invented" a few months ago as a result of careless typing. it proved to be an immediate hit amongst commenters at firedoglake from which it seems to have spread virally. that trool slipped on his own drool! fookin' a! I have been doing some reading ... something I found today - interesting It supports the whole " DON'T FEED THE TROLLS " message Winning by Losing. While the victim is trying to put forward solid and convincing facts to prove his position, the troll's only goal is to infuriate its prey. The troll takes (what it knows to be) a badly flawed, wholly illogical argument, and then vigorously defends it while mocking and insulting its prey. The troll looks like a complete fool, but this is all part of the plan. The victim becomes noticeably angry by trying to repeatedly explain the flaws of the troll's argument. Provoking this anger was the troll's one and only goal from the very beginning. alot of what I read today not only points out supposed "troll" behaviors but also how the retaliation from other posters can also be seen as "troll" behavior Most of all what I got from my readings so far today is something I have always taught my children " choose your battles wisely " and invest your time in the positives people only stir up shit for the reaction - you can fule that, point a finger at the so called bad guy- but in the end, how do others then view you

The term troll is highly subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial. The term is often used to discredit an opposing position, or its proponent, by argument fallacy ad hominem.
Often, calling someone a troll makes assumptions about a writer's motives. Regardless of the circumstances, controversial posts may attract a particularly strong response from those unfamiliar with the robust dialogue found in some online, rather than physical, communities. Experienced participants in online forums know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore him or her, because responding encourages a true troll to continue disruptive posts hence the often-seen warning "Please do not feed the troll". The word troll is often and easily (mis)used as an ad hominem attack against someone whose viewpoints and input cannot otherwise be silenced (i.e., via banning). Its successful use and misuse reveals much about how starkly different the world of technicians is compared to normal social and political discourse. The term troll should be used with attention since it is a very easy way of undermining an opposing point of view. Sometimes, overly using the word "troll" may constitute trolling in itself.

Once upon a time I wrote a "list" if you will, about something or other in music. it was only my opinion, but the high troll from bitchworld posted a picture of a troll as a response, calling me a troll. Look out for people like this. We're gonna have to put out a troll list sometime. [Edited 8/16/07 12:13pm]

Trolls are characters created to control or otherwise affect a forum. So "trolling" means posting in a forum with the intent to disrupt it or capture its full attention through preposterous means.
If you are posting as yourself, by definition you are not a troll. Most trolls exist simply to create mayhem. They are generally created by basement-dwelling morons who get no attention in real life. So, they creat a persona and try to disrupt whatever forums they can find. Not all trolls are mean. Some people create trolls and use them for comedic theatre. People can create multiple trolls and have them play off one another. Yahoo's old news boards were the trolling nirvana. There were hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people on any board at any given time. Most people had no idea what a troll was so they were easy to pull into whatever the trolls wanted to pull them into. Yahoo trolls could be broken down into three categories: 1. Political trolls. They would take the extreme of one side or the other, then use every disgusting tactic they could to mock the other side. 2. Character trolls. These were usually created for comedy but could be used on political boards too. For instance, someone could create a character that was allegedly a Gulf War or Vietnam veteran, then use it to tear down or build up the Iraq war. Comedic characters could be anything - a spelling-challenged waitress; a MidWest school teacher with a penchant for run-on sentences; a college girl with "interesting" boyfriends. 3. Name trolls. These were the meanest. They'd take your Yahoo id and make an id meant to confuse people. Let's say your Yahoo ID was "billysmith123" and you were a normal person. A name troll would make an ID like "billysrnith123" hoping people wouldn't notice the "rn" instead if the "m". Then he'd post as you, but of course he'd be into every disgustingly deviate sex act imaginable. His goal was to make you cry. There aren't many trolls here. I'm positive that "butchersdog" is the poster formerly known as SlamGlam and is venting his frustration at getting banned. Other than that, I think most everyone here is who they say they are. Most are very nice, a small few are not, but they are who they are. If you run across a troll, the only way to make him go away is to ignore him. He wants attention and he doesn't care if it's positive or negative. Just ignore him and he will go away.
