Dissappointed

I just want to point out that I have been visiting his site for years and for some reason tonight we decided to spoil the outcome of the Golden Globes Prince win for all those who watch the show on the West Coast in America.

And whats even more frustrating is that I reported the error immediatly in hopes that other's would not be spoiled and become upset yet no action was taken.

The org has had a long history of preserving and honoring the "Spoiler Rules" that the internet community lives by...In the past all efforts have been made to not spoil the outcome of tv shows, films, reality shows and award shows but tonight we failed as a community.

I can understand the initial error...but to refuse to take action after the error was pointed out is totally unacceptable IMHO. All major online outlets (yahoo homepage, msn, cnn, eonline, ew make an effort to prevent spoiling info.)

I apologize to those who had the experience ruined for them tonight and I hope that in the future we all try our best to accommodate courtesy at the most basic level.

I agree. I logged on right before six to take care of some other business. I clicked into the Org to see what's up, as I had a three-day weekend and was out of town and didn't go online for those days.

First thing I saw was "Prince Wins Golden Globe" - headlined. I couldn't believe it. They were still doing the whole red carpet thing here in Calif., so, I had no idea until it was leaked on this site.

I guess in the future, it'd just be smart not to log online until most of the show is done - or after the show is over.

That is really a matter of geography. The results of, for example, the oscars, and practically every reality TV show are always posted here before they air on TV in Europe.

I happened to know the result of one season of America's Next Top Model by clicking on a thread (which had no spoiler warning) months before the show aired over here. Now, that doesn't bother me, because I don't give a stuff about ANTM, but my wife, who is addicted to it, would've been extremely disappointed if I'd told her. It's just as well she's not an orger too, because it's exactly the sort of thread she would've read.

It's not a big deal to me, but I thought the point was worth making.

On the other hand, I don't think it's unreasonable to report news as it happens.

My frustration is mainly with the refusal to take action and remedy an obvious oversite. In the past, when someone has spoiled a film or outcome of a show either the thread creator or a mod will step in to issue a Spoiler Warning. its just common courtesy.

What's wrong with creating a thread that's vague enough to let those who want to know, know...but not spoil it for others? Something like: Find Out If Prince Won & Discuss On This Thread...

instead, the action taken was akin to this: nana

Ah, ok, I didn't know that was the situation. Yes, that does seem a bit unfair, after all, asking for a spoiler alert is not an unreasonable request. I take that you couldn't change the thread title yourself or you would have done so.

those of you on the west coast should already know better than to log on if a program's already on elsewhere. don't depend on a website to do it for you with spoiler warnings.

then keep your computer off for a couple hours and go do something else until it's time for the west coast feed to come on. that shit cannot be hard, now can it? seriously--i know full-well people here are grown up enough to try and keep themselves from getting burnt from a spoiler post.

don't be disappointed in a website, be disappointed in yourself. the org or whatever other website didn't make you log on and look. don't expect all websites to work in the same order, either. in the end, it's really not that crucial.

oh, this is a bunch of silly bullsh*t. be dissapointed in myself? falloff

look, once again...its about making an effort. i wasn't pissed that the information was spoiled for me...what pisses me off is that after the obvious was pointed out (hey folks, putting this info on the homepage might the westcoast's fun) no action was taken...

but ya know? with all due respect i wouldnt expect *you* to advocate for compassion, courtesy or respect for others...

sooo...lets jut move on.

exactly--people can take the initiative to not log on to a website, just in case someone happens to post the outcome of something instead of expecting people to do it for them. you seriously cannot expect a bunch of people to not post something merely out of respect for others; folks were obviously too elated and wanted to say "yay, prince won!". it's a lot like attempting to keep sand in a milk crate.

i don't see why it shouldn't have been. if it weren't, people would still wind up finding out if they were to log in and look at the m & m forum and see everyone posting seemingly at the exact same time about the same thing.

compromise is a beautiful virtue. as i said already, modifying the thread title to: Click here to see if Prince Won.

or

Click here for running commentary on the Golden Globes.

thats a compromise thats keeps everyone happy.

still wouldn't work. if the org didn't have such a large population, then i could see that working out fine.

that's just it--with all the people we've got here it wouldn't be worth the effort in putting up a spoiler-free message and popping it on the homepage, because underneath you're still gonna have a bunch of people who don't bother to read through the forums first before they post.

it's a nice idea, but it wouldn't fly here.

Exactly. A sticky or featured thread gets created and people, in their excitement, make their thread without checking the forum 1st.

and you lock those threads anyways. so why not hide them instread? you are the one that spends the bulk of your energy locking duplicate topics up. it takes you the exact same amount of time to lock a thread as it does to hide it...so its not like its more work for you. am i missing your point?

but im not even asking you to go that far...just don't splash spoiler info on the homepage. Because you *have* to visit the homepage to log-in.

and some folks like to create threads about shows as they happen so they can discuss it...so, telling folks: "well, just dont log-on then" is just inconsiderate. especially when most major news and entertainment sites try not to spoil stuff...i am totally comfortable cruising the net the evening of a big event on tv (that's time delayed)...cause for years there has been a precedent set not to try to protect folks from spoils. so what i ask isn't out of the ordinary.

even when the stuff is hidden, as a mod you can still see the hidden threads on the forum. if bev were to hide them all, you'd have seen the spoilers anyway and such. my suggestion of simply staying off of the site and/or turning off yer computer for a couple of hours until the west coast feed airs would be a more logical approach. it may pain you a bit more and have you biting your nails for around 2 hours, but hey.

no, you don't. if you really wanna save yourself from viewing the homepage next time, bookmark your "my org" page and log in from there; since that only shows the threads you've participated in, there's no way you can see what's on the homepage or the m & m forum.

[...]so what i ask isn't out of the ordinary.

yes, it is. remember what site you're on.

look at how cborgman addressed my concerns, he acknowledged and took ownership.

dude. in the end, it's up to the person behind the keyboard--they can choose to log on while something's going on in a different time zone at the risk of something being ruined by a spoiler...or not. why leave it up to the site and expect/demand them to withhold stuff for a handful of people? also, who's to say that everyone's taking this up as an issue? the only people who'd really have to worry about this sort of thing are the folks over west.

plus, one of the main reasons this site is up is to provide info. whether or not you wanna find out about something before or after the fact is up to you, not the websites you log on to.

In all honesty... there is no cure, except staying off the computer during that time zone. I will not be on here at Oscar time, I will come in later and talk about it like everyone else.

In a perfect world, what sos suggested would be fantastic... and I will make every effort to edit titles that give away too much information. The reality is, I'm not going to be here in that time zone for fear of ruining my own surprise at the end results!

So... nothing's gonna change. But, I'll be happy in my living room with the computer turned off. nod

If I cared one iota what P does I'd feel like Nicholas, I actually think that even the dumbest of fans could be expected to have some respect for fellow fans a few hours out of the year cos let's face it, it's not THAT often something like this happens. I wouldn't expect it for un-Prince-related stuff though, that's just too much to ask of ordinary dumbass people.
