Bootleg discussion forum? Any chance of one?
I'm kind of surprised there isn't one already in existence on the org. i think most orgers are accustomed to not asking "where can i get this?" etc. by now anyway. Purely discussion only is what i'm thinking. How about it?

apparently he has read the rules. read his post. he's talking about discussing bootlegs, and specifically NOT about getting them. though it seems that the subject would naturally fall under "Prince: Music & More" so what's the point... I think it's too touchy.
Individual authors of prince.org messages are solely responsible for their content, and prince.org isn't interested in encouraging any illegal activity. Specifically, don't solicit to violate copyright law (via trading mp3s/CD-Rs/bootlegs, or whatever),... We cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies bearing appropriate paperwork. It's just asking for trouble because there will always be a few "bad apples".

I've gotta add my .02 cents here.
It's cool we have this site, right? Yeah, I like it. Uh... given the state of Prince's wishes to shut down all that is not Prince controlled, it would be like opening up a Pandora's box to offer such knowledge, or even to discuss such knowledge of them actually existing! Because really, there are NO such things as Prince bootlegs... right? (Key word, Mr. Purple Man... we have no knowledge of their existence or how to get them... ya here Kid?) Really - you knew the answer to this question prior to even asking it... right? |

I totally disagree.
If it's moderated correctly, there should be NO problem. But then I would.....wouldn't I?

It would probably wouldn't be a great idea for the org. Wasn't Small Club or guide2prince closed down and it only discussed boots (correct me if I'm wrong). Might open a big ole can of worms if there was a forum here. I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed

Founder | We may actually have a bootleg discussion forum. Maybe even a trading forum. But I'm not through discussing it with the lawyers yet (and in fact, any IP attorneys out there who want to offer additional opinions, I'm welcome to hearing them.)
So far, our attorneys, including Matt the resident org law-god, say there's nothing illegal about discussing bootlegs, and that we would likely win any suit that might be brought against us. However, it could be a costly court battle, and org finances right now are not such that we would go into that lightly. Everyone knows that Housequake is the bootleg trader's favorite site, and they openly discuss and trade stuff. Why they haven't been sued, I'm not sure, when Uptown magazine was. I strongly believe in the 1st amendment and fan's rights, however, so I DO see a time in the future with the org allows such discussions. But we still have some research to be done, I think. At the same time, I'd be very happy if Prince would quash any market for bootlegs by releasing more live and less-known material, but that's his prerogative. I also have no problem with him enforcing his copyrights and going after the people bootlegging for profit. But it's crystal clear that just discussing boots is well within the law. ben -- "the prince.org guy" |

Why would you want one here anyway? HQ already has one established with tons of people joining everyday for that specific reason. And being over there for a short period of time, I have found there are people over there "in the know". This is in no way to draw people away from here. But why try and duplicate what's already been done extremely well? The items you trade for now most likely came from individuals over there anyway at some point. BTW, beware of catching the bug of trading...once you start, you can't stop!

I kind of agree with this. I much more enjoy chatting over here for the most part. HQ really is for the collectors...and trading. I am willing to bet that the real fans chat here and trade there. There are plenty of us here who are "in the know" we just don't talk about it. I'd much rather have boot discussions amonst those here...but the ones in the know don't talk about it and there are PLENTY of those who don't collect boots here. I do wonder how they get away with it though. It seems that there are a set crowd who JUST stay there. They dis the NPGMC like we do...but no one ever mentions the org. Christian Zombie Vampires

The Org does not need a Bootleg Discussion forum, there is already housequake.com, an established Bootleg discussion/trading forum (which btw is NOT the only thing going on on there!). If The Org needs new ideas to get more activity going on, I suggest they focus on something else than HSQ.com.

this isnt a HQ vs. Org thing though.....There are people who dont visit HQ and vice versa.... personally I dont see anything wrong with having a bootleg forum.....it sure beats a sex/relations forum.... or does it? Space for sale...

Oh man...feathers being rufflled already huh? WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TO SAY WE DON'T NEED A BOOTLEG DISCUSSION FORUM!?!? Thanx for yer post, but i'm sure if Ben sees fit to have a bootleg discussion forum then we'll have one thankyou very much. PS: What the fuck is HSQ???

Why would you want to start something that's already being provided? I got to agree with Dawnunder on this, HSQ is largely established as a boot info source. Next to no weird side-discussion, like Prince vs MJ hahahaha, so on a serious, collectors level. Focus on the things you're best at, I'd say. Anyway, Prince ain't gonna like another boot-site and might wake up and close all boot thingies at once. Do we really want to stir up the war again??

NothinG said: PS: What the fuck is HSQ??? Well to answer your question; that's the website that had the guts to post info about Bootlegs and wasn't affraid of the PP-police. There's also a trading forum on housequake, which is working very well. I just don't see the point in having two places on the web where one can find trading partners. I remember when I spoke to Ben in Malmo, only half a year ago, he told me he had some great ideas for the org. (I am sure a bootlegforum wasn't one of them.) Anyway I am not here to diss the org. The people at housequake don't do shit like that!! Ben, I hope your ideas on changing the org will work out! Just don't copy Housequake, nobody gains anything by doing so..... signed a quaker with an org-shirt [This message was edited Sat Aug 7 6:28:27 2004 by theoneandonlyRaS]

There isn't enough room on the WORLD wide web for another discussion forum? I'm an avid Housequake member, and also a member here at Prince.org - however it's comments like yours that stir up the 'them v's us' crap. There is enough room for another discussion / trading / bootleg section 100 times over. Don't act like you have exclusive rights to anything - except your opinion. Everyone gains by knowledge!

And now the Org starts to copy HSQ... not good, not good at all. We do not copy them, and I wouldn't claim they copy us. There are a somewhat limited amount of "things" you can offer on a website for music fans. And really, not much of what is on either of our sites (if anything), is an original idea. I'd like to think that the org innovates and offers more new types of experiences for Prince fans than any other site, and I think our history clearly shows that to be the case. HQ didn't invent bootleg discussions, not even within the Prince bootleg scene... they just do it on a larger and more public scale. I'd like the org to be a one-stop, highly-integrated resource, and if having a bootleg forum aids that and I think it would work well, I'm open to it (not to mention it gets requested very often!). But the legal issues need to be addressed. I do have a lot of other ideas for the org that I've had for quite some time, some even back to org 1.0 that never got realized. I'd rather work on those things, as they are more "innovative" -- but they are also more time-consuming and difficult to implement. So while I'd love to work on those other features, we end up trying out with stuff like the LS&R forum because it's easy to add. Believe me, if I didn't have to work for a living, the org would be really amazing, feature-wise I guess to sum up here--the org has a LONG history of innovation and creating new features to benefit the online Prince fan community as a whole. We don't set out to "copy" anyone, but of course might add features that are useful that other sites might already have--almost anything you can possibly imagine, some site out there is already doing! So don't be silly. ben -- "the prince.org guy" |
