Sorry, but that's not how it works. Just because the Mayor likes the idea doesn't mean it shouldn't go through the proper channels of governance. This is firmly the fault of the Estate and their subcontractor (Gravelled). They should have sold tickets when the licences were agreed. Plain and simple. I understand that your pissed off, but trying to blame the officials is not right. Bombarding them and pissing them off is not going to help the estate or fans in the long term.
No I don't think we can let the city off the hook. The fact that the city council meeting was only a couple days before scheduled opeining always suggested to me it was more of a formality. I certainly didn't expect city council members to have all these questions just a couple days before opening. What have they been doing the past month and a half? How did the city ever approve this timeline in the first place? The mayor put out a press release the same day as the estate did. So clearly the mayor at least knew what their timeline was. Why didn't he tell the Estate the timeline was too aggressive and they should plan for opening in 2017? Why didn't the city council have a list of demands/questions for the Estate/Graceland to satisfy rather than bringing them all up 2 days before scheduled opening and after tickets had already gone on sale? One almost gets the feeling this is a power play by the city council to show they're not just a rubber stamp. The problem is it has real impacts to those who already purchased tickets. Graceland said they drastically cut back the number of tickets they were selling and reduced hours of operation as well. They weren't even selling tickets past December 31. I think the city could have conditionally approved it and used these 3 months to study traffic impacts. And all the complaints about pedestrian safety are BS. People have been coming to PP since April 21 and there haven't been any incidents or issues of pedestrian safety. The number of people milling around the fence has gradually decreased since April 21 and with the fence cleared pretty much no one is walking around there any more as there is nothing to see. This was the mayor's argument - that the city has been able to handle things just fine the past 6 months. Of course the Estate and Graceland aren't totally blameless but I think the mayor and the city messed up by not putting the breaks on this before it was ever announced.

Yep. I was just there on Saturday (trip to Jim's Apple Barn that just happened to turn into a side trip up to PP), and there were three of us at the fence. Not including the JWs that have set up camp. I would think a temporary order could be put into place until final approval. Prince had to have some type of operating permit to have the PPAD parties and tours. Couldn't that include this?

So frustrating and disappointing for fans who were coming for the opening.

Just saw this a few minutes ago, was wondering when it'd make its way here...

I'm very disappointed, this seems sloppy and is reminiscent of the tribute concert ordeal. Not sure why they'd have begun selling tickets without making sure everything was in place. I can only hope tickets can still be honored at a later date, will get refunded, or that by some chance things fall back into place and Paisley goes forward and opens.

Refunds aren't likely, going by Paisley's website. confused

I blame the city, especially the mayor. Obviously Bremer and Graceland were lead to believe this would be approved and the city council meeting was just a formality. That certainly was not the case. Why did city council members wait until today to ask for more detailed plans?

Exactly in no way would the Graceland people put the money up for this if they were not assured that the opening would get started.

This is people on the council sabortaging the project. Which is surprising considering what a good neighbor everyone said he was in Chanhassen. eek They want to fail because they could allow it temporaily so the three months worth of tickets holders could come out. What a bunch of asshats.

Well I can't find much on the city council website. Seems agendas and minutes haven't been updated since July. eek

I did find this, it won't let me post the link but I'll type it out.

www.ci.chanhassen.mn.us/2016-24

It was approved on Sept 20 by the planning commission.

It shows the press releases from Bremer, the mayor & the City of Chanhassen.

PP Muesem business plan was put forth on Aug. 19.

This is all on the City, not PP. Place blame on the City.

You're right...he's never cancelled projects, or not come through after he proposed something, or ran his business from the seat of his pants.

What was I thinking.... lol

Yuck - I really don't get all the bureaucracy of it all.

.

Hope it turns out well and there is a way to have it all approved quickly without another meeting. Good lord.

.

Strange to note that I was in Chaska, MN this weekend and immediately loved the place decided wow I could definitely move here. Then I kept driving and hit a "Welcome to Chanhassan" sign and felt oh how right this would be haha. Hopefully the city councils in both places aren't dreranged. Would be incredibly disappointing to me.

Edit: add joke: I'm getting Crystal Ball flashbacks.... oh god no....

I hate to say this, but, in all honesty, Paisley Park themselves are to blame for all this in being TOO hasty in everything and so eager to cash in on their deceased boss, without the final OFFICIAL approval from the City Council first. Paisley Park, like their deceased boss, live in their own world with no regard to officialdom or laws or anything!! They are basically laws unto themselves!! They should be turning around and refunding everyone for everything!!! Also, just like their deceased boss, they are not experts at business and organization!!! Everything was all TOO rushed!!!

In the real world, you cant just build an extension on your home or even build a new home without submitting plans and blueprints to local councils FIRST and then waiting for their approval before you can go ahead(Not sure about the US, but here in the UK this is what has to happen BY LAW). It seems as though Paisley Park were so delusional that didnt feel they had to do anything like that!! You cant just go ahead and do what u like, when u like, where u like, how u like and with who u like in the REAL WORLD!!!

I am just glad that I didnt blindly jump on this museum bandwagon and had the COMMON SENSE to wait a while untill everything was set in stone!!! I live in the UK and I am so glad that I didnt hastily book flights, motel rooms, rented a car, got tour tix, unlike a lot of u guys, who, I am sure, are gonna lose 1000s of dollars!!!

Oh well, I guess u live and learn!!! biggrin

PP did submit all the plans as required. The zoning commission approved them and sent it to city council for approval.

Does anyone think for one minute that the Estate, Graceland, and all the people involved in trying to get this opened, would have moved forward knowing that it wasn't going to be approved?

My heart goes out to anyone who has been out even 1 cent for this! I cannot imagine how hurt and angry folks have to be. Personally I know that if I was a ticket holder I would not be able to keep from feeling slightly scammed on this matter if The estate and the city did not do something to rectify with those who have been impacted by these developments.

The mayor needs to call a special meeting for TODAY, the sooner the better to give PP permission as a temporary agreement to go ahead and open on time.

This seems very odd.

Why does it need to be re-zoned? For a tax break presuably? I read something else that Graceland are predicting 600,000 visitors a year? They didn't get even half that when Prince was alive. Now he's dead visitor numbers are going to quadruple? His albums didn't even sell 600,000 copies... If it's being re-zoned as a tourist destination and expecting over half a million people a year (not a chance) where does that leavePP continuing to function as a recording studio.

No, 600K is what Graceland in Memphis gets in a year. I don't think anyone said they were expecting that for PP. In fact last night Graceland said they were scaling back ticket sales and hours of operations because they wanted to walk before they started running.

If the vote was 3/2 to not approve it, and there are 4 city council members, did the mayor break the tie and voted to put it off also?

All I can say is that I'm disappointed in the city. Traveling up there is a significant hardship for my family and we are not likely to get our money back. We would not be going if the tour was not an option. The comment that they 'have only one chance to get this right' is a silly scare tactic.

I drove by PP on my way to work this morning and the parking lot was full of vehicles so they're not stopping any of the work currently being done. I think they will hack to come to some temporary agreement. Piss off these early ticket holders and they probably won't come back.

No, one council member voted with the mayor, not because he was in agreement but because he thought 120 days wasn't enough time. Seriously?!? They need more than 120 days to do another traffic study and come up with a solution for fans who want to leave mementos at PP? That's ridiculous.

Hello:

I'm one of many out-of-towners who bought tickets for a Paisley Park tour. I was dismayed to hear of yesterday's vote tabling the decision on the facility's museum designation.

I'm hoping you can consider allowing those who already purchased tickets and made arrangements to visit your community to tour Paisley Park (even if the tour times need to be consolidated into more limited hours), while you consider the final status of the museum. Honoring already-sold tickets will extend tremendous goodwill to visitors who are eager to contribute to your community's local businesses.

Thank you for your consideration,

Great! This is what I sent. I hope that we all recieved updates, atleast by noon.

Dear City Council members,

Many of my family members and I planned a trip to Chanhassen for October 5th and 6th to celebrate the opening of Paisley Park. We found out about the opening though the national news media and visited the Paisley Park website to purchase tickets over a month ago. I also booked a hotel room a month in advance, only to find out after 1 A.M. this morning that a late vote had been taken, and the majority of council members decided to delay the grand opening. It would have been less of a disappointment/inconvenience if we could have been notified at least 48 hours in advance. Many people (myself included) have taken time off of work, payed for hotel rooms, flights, rental cars and tickets. All of which are non refundable because of the extremely short notice.
Iā€™m sending this email to politely ask, what can be done? The majority of us can't cancel reservations that have been made in your city because of this very short notice.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone will reply,

So I recieved an email from the Mayor..... I'm so frustrated, I want to cry. Not because i'm sad but because money is so hard to come by. I'm a young college student. I dont have money to throw away. I have no problem with them delaying the opening. Thats FINE. Its the fact that we were notified about this in such a short time & I can't get my money back at all for any of the reservations i've made. IDK man huhhhhhh. *Deep Breaths*

This is the email from the Mayor of Chanhassen

Dear (My Name) -

Thank you for your note.

I wonder how many tickets have been sold, and to which days/times (I'm sure most were sold for the tribute weekend). Depending on the quantity, I'm wondering how likely it would be for the council to allow tours just for existing ticket-holders -- I would be OK with them changing (somewhat) the time of my tour if they wanted to consolidate the tours to more limited time blocks. And of course, they would stop selling any more tickets until this s%$-show is resolved.

-

I'm keeping my fingers crossed they find a way to honor sold tickets (and not just by refunding), but not holding my breath.
