Ex-Moderator | Alright, this is the slightly edited version of my run-down of activities over the weekend I sent my friends.
I had a fabulous time. Though it started off rough, spending 2.5 HOURS on the plane at the gate in Mpls due to engine troubles, when I finally got to Miami I had a yummy, yummy dinner with Dan on Thursday night. We skipped appetizers in lieu of desserts and I had a lobster risotto with wild mushrooms and truffle oil that was to die for! We shared a chocolate grand canyon for dessert, which was a molten chocolate cake with ice cream and fudge sauce and all that kinda goodness. The restaurant was beautiful as well, with pretty flowers all around and our server was probably the best service we had all weekend. Oh, and it was HOT in Miami. Like, sweating all the time hot. Friday morning I went for a walk to the beach, got some coffee by myself, wandered some more, had a little brunch by myself, read and relaxed in the shade. Cborgman and sosgemini got in late that afternoon and we all met Dex at the Spire bar on the roof of The Hotel. Todd Oldham did all the interior design work, I think. The drinks were super yummy, the view was gorgeous and that high up the breeze was quite nice. We walked down to Ocean Drive (along the ocean, lol) and had dinner at a place called Mango's that had a live band and dancers and such. I had BBQ salmon on a bed of field greens with fresh mangos and a mango vinagrette. YUM. We walked down to Lincoln Road Mall, which is a long outdoor pedestrian mall with lots of bars, restaurants, cafes and such and had a few more drinks and chatted a LOT and went home. Saturday we had breakfast at a cute little place (where weirdly enough Matthew Broderick's doppelganger was eating next to us) and headed to Little Havana. It was really, really neat. We saw the Cuban men playing dominos, the Latino walk of fame (the stars are all along the walk) and Dex kept getting mistaken for a random basketball player. It was a hoot! We wandered into an art gallery and the artist happened to be there and he showed us around and talked about many of his paintings to us. I bought a print, his stuff was really amazing. I'll give you guys the web address later, when I get my luggage back. We had lunch at a cute little place and headed back to our hotels. Dan, borgy and I changed and went down to the beach. We floated about the ocean for a few hours, just enjoying the lazy late afternoon before it was time to go back and get ready for dinner at Bed. We got to Bed and were "seated" at our bed quickly. However, shortly after that a group of very drunk bachelorettes were seated next to us. They were kind enough to move us at our request. They were annoying the bejeezus out of me. Dinner was awesome, we were brought this wild mushroom soup (that we didn't order, compliments of the chef) to start with in a little espresso cup. YUM. I had a crazy escargot dish for appetizer, a lobster dish for dinner, dessert and a few glasses of wine. Bed started to go down hill after dinner unfortunately as the service got progressively worse as the place started to fill up with the club crowd and not just dinner crowd and by the time we were getting ready to leave they'd turned off the music and had the boxing match playing on the big screens as if it were a sports bar. What the hell??? Still and all, a fun time, up till the very end. The night gets sorta fuzzy from there. It was decided we'd head to Twist. Dan started buying the drinks and after our first big tip they were typically gay bar strong. We chatted, we laughed, we danced, we had a really really fun night. Upon awaking Sunday morning, Dan bought Nicholas and I breakfast and we even had the waitress laughing at us going over our confusion and stories of the previous evenings festivities. Since Nicholas had missed his 7am flight, he ended up spending an extra day so he and I went to dinner Sunday night after sleeping off our hangovers all afternoon. When we got to a restaurant the hostess told us a tornado was coming. We still sat outside. By the time we finished eating it had started to sprinkle and by the time we got back to the hotel on foot we were SOAKED. There was a tornado warning the rest of the evening and the thunder was LOUD and scary. Good thing all I wanted to do was sleep anyway. And that was Miami. Dan's pictures will follow in a week or so. |
