With this site it would appear that I could fill a book with what I don't know about music.

While that soounds like a depressing statement, it's not. Realizing where you are on the musical food chain just challenges me even more.

I'm thinking about building some flash swf that can play the different chord changes, to get an idea of how different chord progressions sound. What the hell do I know.

I wonder if there is anything like that already online? I still have my workbooks from Music Theory in college and they came with tapes that had samples of the chord progressions. I also had an ear training program for my old mac that mainly focused on scales and intervals.

I once recorded a few of my homework assignments using midi. It was cool to hear what I was writing. I remember in high school, my teacher would play some of our assignments in class.

I've wasted so many years not knowing theory, & working of instinct, i think i better do some homework. Then again, i dont want 2 kill the creative juices with 2 much Theory hmm
Otan, i like that flash.swf idea, a fun way of learning Theory.Sounds good smile

I'm taking piano lessons but not learning theory, on purpose. These sites I'm using to just help me figure out basics. IMO, music is an on going journey to be taken at my own pace but I must groove.

I agree with you about the fear of learning the rules, and thereby losing that which made you quirky... whether it's that you've always used major chords, no matter what.

However, learning the rules doesn't mean that you'll stop doing your quirky stuff - it just means that you'll now know WHY your quirky stuff works when it does, and why it doesn't work when it dont. I learned this in design school, after being a designer for 6 years.

Like they say - learn the rules so you'll know how to break them.

Thanks for the props Gus. I'm going to get back into recording stuff this weekend! FINALLY! YAY!!
