Movies about Music

I just watched The Thing Called Love. I really like this movie, I taped it off HBO a long time ago.

Four struggling country-western performers wrangle with making it in love and the music business in this film, centering around Miranda Presley (Samantha Mathis), a talented young singer who buses it from New York City to Nashville. En route to success, she finds herself at the Bluebird Café on open-mike night, making friends with handsome bucks, singers James Wright and Kyle Davidson (River Phoenix and Dermot Mulroney). Sandra Bullock also stars as Miranda's less-talented roommate, in this drama from Peter Bogdanovich (MASK).

THE THING CALLED LOVE marks the final screen performance of actor River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose October 31, 1993.

What movies do you think accurately depict the life of a musician/singer-songwriter/composer type?

Here's another one I like...

Illeana Douglas plays a singer-songwriter (loosely modeled after Brill recording artist Carole King) whose life runs emotionally parallel to popular music trends. John Turturro is a stand-in for "wall of sound" producer Phil Spector and Matt Dillon is a thinly disguised version of maverick Beach Boy Brian Wilson. It's a bit too schematic in the way the central character is always in the right place at the right time, but as a tale of fame and romantic highs and lows in the '50s and '60s the movie is funny, touching, and sincere. It's a lively and loving tribute to timeless music and the colorful characters who created it

The fim is a little bit "TV Movie" but the music is really, really good in this movie. Very authentic.

'God Give Me Strength' by Burt Bacharach & Elvis Costello is one of my most favourite songs ever.

They're at a signing gig at some record store and a fan brings up their album which is pure black cover, and they try signing it with black pen. lol, and the fan is trying to read the autographs, and the band was shining it through the light to show him its there.

I've got to check out Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind for that matter...

Other obvious choices are the movies based on real people:

Amadeus
La Bamba
Bird
Purple Rain
Imortal Beloved
Farinelli
What's Love Got to Do With It?

etc.

Oddly enough, Jerry Seinfeld's Comedian.

It's a documentary that follows him, post-hit-series. He's dropped all his old bits, and is going through the process of working out all new material. The movie also follows another comedian who's on the rise, going through the same steps - revising material, doing live gigs, discussing what went well, what should be updated.

While the movie is about stand-up comedians, I found myself identifying with a LOT of the insights. Jerry's actual routine is RARELY shown in the movie, (thankfully, cuz, honestly, I don't think he's that funny) but a LOT of the movie focuses on pre-, or post-routine jitters... He's seen talking to other stand up comedians like Colin Quinn and Chris Rock - who ALL continue to work stand up.

Highlight:
Jerry S and Colin Q are talking about the process of developing new bits. Jerry's asking Colin, "how do you keep coming up with new material? I feel like I'm barely coming up with anything" and Colin replies, "always get up. Go out and find a comedy club, and just get up there, every night, and continue to try new stuff. Get up there with your 10 minutes, and then elaborate. Go, see what happens. Every night".

And that's EXACTLY the same with playing/writing. Whether it's in your basement or at an open jam somewhere, try every day, every night, to get in there and create. Start out with what you KNOW you can do, and then push yourself into new areas, not to prove yourself, but to get comfortable exploring new areas.

It was a great movie for ANY performing artist.
