I want Prince's heavy tone. Stop laughing. yes. yes. I'm the one that said be original, don't copy him, it's in his fingers and his mind, and all that crap. I'm the one that made fun of those of you that go batshit trying to get the right number of frets, the correct length guitar cable, the right strap, whatever.
I don't care. I want that tone from last night on RnR Hall of Fame. HOLY CRAP that was badass. So, to get that: replace tele neck pickup with a tele bridge pickup, boss DS-2, and use a compressor maxed up, right? Hectim, you're the pro at this, am I right? WOW last night was mind blowing. EDIT: By the way - YESTERDAY afternoon on ebay, the DS-2 was going for $20-25 bucks. NOW, they're up to $50. Apparently, I'm not the only one wanting that sound... Moderator | I just had stay up late to watch the encore as to make sure I wasn't hearing things.
It was that good. "My guitar gently weeps" Wasn't that the Shee-ot? Hope everyone is making an attempt to support the current tour. Even if it's just movie. Now I see why everyone wants to see him release a guitar album. The kid really can play! All Rights Reserved. |

Thanks Yamomma, eveyone is talking about that solo and I had not seen/heard it. It's fucking amazing, what a badass solo is that! It helps that the song is a true classic, but I never expected Prince to rip it up like that! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Moderator | Everytime Prince is on TV or the radio, I tell my son, "That's Uncle Prince!"
My wife hates it when I do that, thinking that he'll grow up thinking that's his real uncle or something. All Rights Reserved. |

Fruit salad... yummy yummy... My neice just had a wiggles birthday party. HA! I'm so glad someone else here knows who they are. I go to work every morning with those songs stuck in my head. Actually, the more I read up on them, I've grown to respect them quite a lot. What started out as a college assignment, has turned into quite the household name! And the kids LOVE them. And the more I watch them, it's a pretty stripped down production. The intrest is most in the music! When I need his attention, all I have to do is start singing a wiggles tune and he turns around real fast! It was hilarious to see him bobbing his head to "Let's go crazy" and "Kiss" last night! I'll have to make a CD for him with songs like "Starfish and coffee, Dimonds and Peals, Everywhere, The Work, Musicology, The Rest of My Life, Make Yo Momma Happy, etc... something a two year old will dig and be safe for young ears! 'HIS SOLO ON THE GUITAR HAS THAT REALLY STRONG SOUND'. YES SON U R RIGHT .UNFORTUNATELY FRANK DIED A WHILE BACK,SO THATS WHY WE LOVE PRINCE SO MUCH .HE'S TAKEN OVER WHERE OTHERS HAVE HAD TO GIVE IT AWAY.(I LOVE MY BOY .HE'S SO SMART ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... [This message was edited Mon Mar 22 5:30:46 2004 by otan] I REMEMBER READING A ARTICLE IN 'GUITAR PLAYER' WHERE THEY TALKED ABOUT "THE HOHNER".HOW PRINCE LOVED THE LOOK OF THE SCRATCH PLATE (went with his outfit) and that his sound tech's had a HELL OF A TIME SETTING UP, AS THE THING SOUNDED LIKE SHIT! I BELIEVE ITS BEEN MODIFIED FROM A STRAIGHT OUT HOHNER,WITH APPROPRIATE HARDWARE & CUSTOMISING TO GIVE THIS BABY A BETTER INITIAL TONE SO THE SOUND GUY'S COULD WORK LESS & PRINCE COULD HOWL BETTER! ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... Mind you don't get it on your shoes though. It'll never come off...

Mind you don't get it on your shoes though. It'll never come off... Seconded. I have Kinmans (blues) in my American Standard Strat (ash/maple): Those things handle the ride from straight-ahead jazz to Stevie Ray/Clapton blues to crazily overdriven Prince/Santana tones --- all without the 60-cycle hum. Kinmans are great!

Whoops, just reading this now.
Well, I keep myself sane by trying to find a mix between P & Zappa's sounds. Or rather, I look for a cetrain characteristic to those tones I love: midrange honk, good for legato playing etc. The DS-2 definitley gives you those honking mids, but as it lacks sustain a lot of compression is necessary. I do think the Kinman pickups (or otrher hot replacements) are important if you want to get that much distortion from a tele. Add delay and at touch of chorus and you're well on your way, I s'pose. Oh and it also helps to send sall of that into the clean channel of your (transistor) amp or straight into the mixing desk. Basically, it's a question of take everything that makes a great blues tone and reverse it (lots of heavily used Boss effects, transistor amp, oh the horror!) otan said: So, to get that: replace tele neck pickup with a tele bridge pickup, boss DS-2, and use a compressor maxed up, right? ack! aaaaak. Yep. I'm sort of going in between the two. I tried it out on a solid state amp (the JC120) but hated it. It sounded like a radio shack amp. So I'm running the DS2 thru my Deluxe, so the compression is there, the feedback, as well as the honking fatness. (my next band name, right there. "The Honking Fatness") Tonight's the first jam with the new setup, I'll let you know how far off I am. The chorus - that will have to wait. I'm a total burnout on chorus - having played guitar in the 80's when it was mandatory that you have a chorus in your guitar chain. Thanks for the tips Hectim.
